TONIGHT SHOW CO-HOST DIES!
According to NBC News on the Today show this Tuesday morning, June 23, 2009 Johnny Carson's former Tonight show co-host Ed McMahon dies. The 86-year-old TV personality Ed McMahon enters the hospital in early 2009 for treatment of pneumonia plus other ailments. We fondly remember him with his legendary H-e-e-e-e-re’s Johnny. He becomes a star in his own right on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson from 1962 to 1992. For decades, Ed sets up jokes and skits for Johnny Carson. As we look back, his trademark laughter brings smiles to our faces even right now. Howard Bragman, Ed's publicist, tells the Associated Press that Ed McMahon dies after a long battle with cancer shortly after midnight at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center surrounded by his wife, Pam, and other family members.

REPORTER ESCAPES
An article by Mark Magnier in the LA Times affirms that 41 year old NY Times reporter David Rohde escapes from his Taliban captors in Afghanistan after 7 months in captivity. David bases his reports from Islamabad, Pakistan. The report says that Mark jumps over a wall and flees the compound where the Taliban holds him. After he gains his freedom on Friday night the 41 year old Rohde tells his wife that he and his interpreter Tahir Ludin escape their captors in the North Waziristan region but that their driver, Asadullah Mangal, asks to remain behind. The Taliban abducts the trio on November 10, 2008 in Afghanistan's Lowgar province, which is about 60 miles south of the Afghan capital, Kabul. They go there to interview a Taliban commander.

TOM ASWELL (Denham Springs, LA) Jim: ...my book...scheduled for publication in the fall. The publisher has asked that I begin a second book to deal with the history of Louisiana’s independent recording studios, record labels, record producers, and radio. All those were covered in the original book but because of length considerations, they had to be taken out, so they’re basically written already but I would like to expand on some of those areas. That’s where I need your help. With your widespread readership, I would ask that you send out the message that I need any former Louisiana deejays please contact me at my email address (Thomas.Aswell@LA.GOV) to give me their thoughts and perceptions about where radio has gone since the golden era of the 50s and 60s as well as some of their memories of their radio days, including some of the pranks they may have pulled on each other. I’m also very much interested in the history of radio news coverage, including anyone’s coverage of the Kennedy assassination. I can make the tie-in to the assassination because Dale & Grace ("I’m Leaving It Up to You") were on tour with Dick Clark’s Caravan of Stars at the time and actually waved at Kennedy as he passed them in his motorcade in Dallas only minutes before he was shot. This is history, Jim, and it’s very important that I obtain as much feedback as possible from the radio veterans out there. Please don’t forget to regale me with your own stories and experience, as well as your opinions about the current status of radio. I really appreciate your help on this. Regards, Tom Aswell

COLONEL ST. JAMES (Houston, TX)
Hey Jim, I saw that, like me, you are also a nominee for the Texas Radio Hall Of Fame. Pretty cool, huh?!? I hope I can count on your vote and support, as well as the votes and support of all your readers. It would be so great if you and I could both get in this year! Thanks, Jim!! Aloha, Colonel St. James (
www.colonelstjames.com) / (www.facebook.com/col.stjames) Listen 7pm til 12Mid CT online at www.kkrw.com!

JRRR seems to serve as just a promoter of other nominees into the TRHoF but I welcome your votes very much.

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES (Marshall, TX) Jim, Great to hear from you. We are melting here in Marshall. There is an American Idol Audition for 100 every: 30 seconds Saturday June 20, 2009 in downtown Marshall across from The Weisman antique store. I guess they are going to audition on the street. Plus the Old Courthouse here in Marshall opens to the public this Saturday June 20. Amazing, my apartment here in Marshall Texas is cooler now than in the winter time. Maybe because my neighbors were burning their heat. Roy E. Henderson's AM 1090 KNUZ Bellville, Texas in Austin County last I heard is still open for someone to have this 250 watt clear channel daytime frequency. From what I hear there is no building and no property. Just paper and some equipment somewhere. Someone might call KULF FM in Brenham if they are interested. The FCC last I heard wants to Keep AM 1090 serving Bellville Texas. I am looking forward to returning to Bellville Texas and somewhere inside Austin County Texas. It was refreshing while I was with AM 1090 KNUZ in Bellville in their 11x14 transmitter studio office June 1997 to April 2000. Leslie Wayne Hodges

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) I have an LP I picked up at the Goodwill on Singleton for 45 cents: Pacific Jazz Record Disc Jockey Edition. It is a sampler with different artists. It has "When Your Lover Has Gone", Bud Shank with Strings. I played it after reading you column. Also it had "Little Girl Blue", Bud Shank and Trombones. In the group of the Three Trombones: Bud Shank, Alto Sax; Maynard Ferguson, Bob Enevoldsen and Stu Williamson, valve trombones; Claude Williamson, piano; Joe Mondragon, bass; Shelly Manne, drums. I got to hear Maynard Freguson when he did a concert in the lobby at El Centro. But he played trumpet in his concert. He had a hit at the time with a movie. I was looking through a book I have: "How To Play The 5-string Banjo", Pete Seeger. He gives the advice to have fun and experiment but don't expect others to want to listen or enjoy your experiments anymore than a cook wanting to show off his new avant-garde creation from the kitchen. Silence Is Golden... I own a couple of different instruments but most people have only seen me play the guitar or my soprano recorder. The others I play for my own enjoyment or with others who want to have fun and try out ideas... Best regards, Charles George

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX)
Really enjoyed the lengthy description of your early radio days as you dispatched to me on 6/14; much like mine too & I determine you should place these word-pictures in book form for all to read. Many thanks for your insight as I re-read several times. Ah those hazy, crazy, days of radio! Make it a cool weekend. BOB & Sonny Lee

BARRY KILGORE (Houston-Conroe, TX) Jim I still think you should charge for a subscription to your news letter. I'd buy. I bet everyone else would too. I can't wait to get your latest. Barry Kilgore; Family Law Radio (
