LIN TV FURLOUGHS
In an email the LIN Corporate office in Providence, RI announces unpaid, voluntary furloughs for LIN TV Austin/Central Texas employees at KXAN TV NBC CH36 and KNVA TV CW CH54. On the local scene, Eric Lassberg, KXAN President/GM, breaks the news in a quarterly staff meeting just before the emails hit their inboxes. Vincent L. Sadusky, LIN TV CEO, declares, Given the state of the economy and the level of uncertainty in predicting advertising revenue, the Company has defined a series of further cost reduction actions that the Company could potentially enact and largely realize during the remainder of 2009. Lassberg says, It’s typical stuff in tough times. They are open to any employee. LIN owns 27 full power TV stations in 17 mid-sized markets. Austin, TX is in the 49th market.
TRIVIA QUESTION: Why does 1960s Wall of Sound producer Phil Spector place instrumentals on the B side of 45 rpm records? The answer appears below.

JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) Dear Jim, I understand the pain of losing your precious pet. We...rescued the most wonderful cat from the local pound. Ralph was a very big silver tabby who immediately stole all our hearts and anyone who met him realized he was a superior animal. When I think about Ralph particularly, I still cry over the loss of him. He did the most amazing things, and seemed to sense when someone needed to be comforted. I hope you are feeling the love people are feeling for you, Jim. You hang in there. Always, JC
WHERE DO YOU READ JRRR? Tell us how far away from Houston, TX that you read JRRR. Send your full name, city, state and country of residence to
BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) You mentioned that everyone is younger when we reach 65...you are so right: all those who were older than me are now gone: George Burns, John Wayne, Ronald Reagan, etc, etc, only one left is Dick Clark; I am older than everyone else! I never was a fan of The Beatles, so Elvis is still King in my view. (of course he did set foot on European soil, but not as a stage star.) You signed off with a quote in JRRR of the great Will Rogers. Are you aware that he once toured on shows in Texas with the Father of Country Music, Jimmie Rodgers? When Jimmie lived in Kerrville (1929-32), he & Will Rogers did many shows together in places like San Angelo, Lubbock, Abilene, San Antonio, etc. I have seen the home Rodgers built in Kerrville ("Blue Yodelers Paradise" for $50,000 in 1929); still there, a private home now & not even marked by the city or C of C! By the way, Will Rogers, Jr. died about 5 years ago in Tucson, AZ. I was fortunate to meet Jimmie's widow in Nashville, & Carrie's autographed, dated note to me is still a treasure. She died in 1961. I didn't mean to bore or become so windy; sometimes I can't stop relating stories. I must get them in a book someday. I do hope you & Tejas have an enjoyable holiday & I appreciate your friendship. BOB & Sonny Lee.

MARK CARRILLO (San Antonio, TX) Subject: Your Garth Brooks trivia… Country ruled radio 20 years ago because Pop music was going through some changes and by the early 90s Grunge would take over and drive more folks to discover or re-discover Country music. The station I worked for the longest was Y100 here in S.A. and we were strong with our Country Dozen (that’s 12 Country Favorites Back To Back) and giving away Y100 Dollar Bills with Bossy The Cash Cow...your cue to call was the sound of a cash register followed by Bossy mooing. I think the ultimate Garth song is his very first single Much Too Young (To Feel This Old) and when it first released it stalled on the charts and was on its way down. Garth decided to tackle the promotion of the record himself. One day Garth shows up by himself to see me and the best PD I ever had, Scott Huskey. I did middays and was the music coordinator. We went in to the production room, listened to the song, sat around. One of my favorite bits of memorabilia is a picture I took with Garth that day. No one knew how huge he was going to blow up. Forward one year and At Y100s 3rd Birthday Party we had a concert in the parking lot of the now defunct Central Park Mall...our air staff had the pleasure of singing Friends In Low Places with him. I doubt anyone else ever got to do that. How I wish I had a pic of that. Subsequent concerts had us taking listeners backstage and meeting Garth...he did it up right. He is as genuine as he seems...would cue his crew to bring out stacks of shirts...to hand them out...make it a great experience. What a class act. I even had him tape my home telephone answering machine message. Boy, did that blow a few minds. Garth became big because he combined great Country music with Rock and Roll sensibilities and showmanship. Mark Carrillo
LESLIE WAYNE HODGES (Marshall, TX) Hi Jim, Sure would like to be working with you and the others from the WFAA 570/ 820 days of radio. Hopefully the WFAA investor owners the second time around would realize what they truly have. Which is the on air talent is very much a gift to the WFAA 570/ 820 listeners. Where I am right now in Marshall at the Weisman, American Idol auditions are going on. Then the twelve selected today go to Shreveport next Saturday then from their on to Denver to perform before The Judges then to the American Idol Stage. Leslie Wayne Hodges

TRIVIA ANSWER: Phil Spector puts instrumentals on the B sides of 45 rpm records so DJs won't flip records over from the A sides.
CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Subject: Book Value. Hi, Do you ever sleep? I hear sleep is good for the health if you don't do too much of it like Rip Van winkle. I ordered a few books from Alibris, since I needed to review, etc. I bought American Folksong, Woody Guthrie; Westminster Dictionary of Christian Ethics edited by John Chilton, and Marguerite de Angeli's Book of Nursery and Mother Goose Rhymes. Some of the Nursery Rhymes mean more as an adult. I am enjoying my HD radio from Radio Shack since I like KLUV 98.7-2 with their oldies from the 50's with no advertising, I wonder how long that will last. I still find good radio to enjoy but then I am the type that likes to scan for stations also. ARB would never ask me to fill a dairy...wait they have changed their methodology? I don't think they would find my listening to WGN, WBBM, WLS, and WSM of much interest. Also Cuba has been putting in a strong signal on 720 and 890 at night the past few nights here. I enjoy the campesinos and salsa music from their stations. Charles
RONALD REAGAN [40th U.S. President] (February 6, 1911–June 5, 2004) One of the traditional methods of imposing statism or socialism on a people has been by way of medicine.
