ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
THREE STARS DIM
Sometimes things happen in threes. In our earth's entertainment galaxy we lose three stars within three days. On Tuesday morning, June 23, 2009 Johnny Carson's former Tonight show co-host Ed McMahon departs. On Thursday morning, June 26, 2009 our beloved actress Farrah Fawcett passes away at 62. We well remember Farrah as a foxy pin up princess in 1976. On Thursday afternoon, June 26, 2009 the self-proclaimed King of Pop Michael Jackson perishes. Fawcett's spokesman Paul Bloch affirms that she leaves us a little before 9:30 am on Thursday in a Santa Monica, CA hospital. She suffers a strong battle with cancer. In the 1970s and to this very day, Farrah is our fantasy dream date. Michael Jackson makes millions of dollars from his record sales and appearances but almost loses it all through expensive outlandish expenditures like his king size castle with its wonderland rides and exotic animals. He dies at the young age of 50. Michael does make wise investments that probably in the long run pays off his huge debts. Michael Jackson is a prime example of someone who seemingly has it all but no one with whom to enjoy his many blessings. Our prayers of comfort are for the families and friends of those three fallen stars.

JONATHAN FRICKE (Nashville-Mount Juliet, TN) NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Reuters) – Guitarist and songwriter Tim Krekel, who played with the likes of Jimmy Buffett, Bo Diddley and others, has died, a statement on his website said on Thursday. Krekel, 58, died on Wednesday at his home in Louisville, Kentucky. His health had deteriorated after undergoing surgery for abdominal cancer, the statement said. He played numerous gigs in Nashville and toured widely with his own bands as well as others', collaborating with Delbert McClinton, Billy Swann and Kris Kristofferson. He joined Buffett's band as lead guitarist in the late 1970s, and left the group to start a solo career that included the albums "Crazy Me" and "Over the Fence". He later formed Tim Krekel & the Groovelbillys and honed his roots-rock style. Krekel's songs were recorded by numerous artists that included Rick Nelson and Canned Heat. Crystal Gayle had a hit with his song "Turning Away" and Patty Loveless with "You Can Feel Bad". Jonathan Fricke

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Subject: Mike Wade KXOL-1360? Yes, I keep trying to get him to drop a line or two for you to use in newsletter. I see I have lost another DXing opportunity. KSKY now has an FM on 92.9, it wouldn't be so bad if they did not simulcast but had separate programming. My favorite by Patsy Cline has to be Walking After Midnight. I love the bass part; I tried to learn it when I attempted to play the electric bass-guitar. I took lessons for a while but my teacher had me realize I was not going to practice enough to make it as a bass guitarist. Another venue I have tried because others made it look easy. I also always liked the bass on the song Turn Back The Hands Of Time. I was wondering whether I would like the same songs if transported back in time. Oh well I start thinking of a song Simon Says when I hear the name Simon Cowell. Also I let Fred Watkins know of your site, I hope he writes you. I know you have a great newsletter so keep telling others. Charles

My great DJ buddy, Jim McCoy, (now RET to Berkeley Springs, WV who gave Patsy her first opp to sing on a sta...his show on WINC, Winchester, VA. I believe at 14) was a pallbearer. To this day, Jim & I are still in contact nearly every week via computer. He is still a personal friend of Charlie Dick & Jim owned a studio & made country records himself. I am most fortunate to have known a lot of people in this business from my 21 yrs in radio & 4 in TV. Thx for your friendship too. BOB

TRIVIA ANSWER: John Shepherd-Barron invents the world's first electronic ATM. De La Rue performs the installation in Barclay's Bank in North London on June 27, 1967. However, Luther George Simjian develops the idea for the first mechanical cash dispenser in 1939. His idea meets skepticism but he persuades the City Bank of New York (now Citicorp) to give it a trial. But, due to the lack of customer acceptance they remove it after 6 months.
GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) This fellow's mother and I went to school together at Union Grove High School near Longview. I have never met him but he found my email address from the column I wrote for Texas Escapes and we started communicating. Below is the email I received from him this evening. 'Bill Monroe used to come to the station on Tuesdays. One day a 1938 Cadillac pulled up and Bill and three friends got out...they looked like the country mafia! We had a kitchen area at the station so on those cold, bleak days I would fix a big pot of pinto beans. That radio station smelled like grandma's house! We also had a couple of listeners that brought us up a couple of trays of sandwiches each week. Bill liked a bowl of pinto beans, a wedge of a sweet onion, hot buttered cornbread, and a glass of sweet tea. Those beans were "mood elevators". Ha! One day I fried up 5 squirrels and when Bill saw them he sat down and proceeded to start eating them. He loved fried squirrel, especially when you fried the head. He loved to eat the brain...I don't think anybody fought him over that! I talked to Ernie the day before he died, he sounded like Ol Ernie. We had a good talk. I thanked him for everything he did for me, he started crying and he thanked me for all I did for him, I started crying. I am glad to have talked to him. He was a good man and a good friend. Where's some of those beans???? Ellis Butch'
ROBERT BROWNING (1812-1889) What most moved him was a certain meal on beans.
