TV PITCHMAN EXPIRES

We see those compelling TV infomercials about OxiClean which begin with the line Hi, Billy Mays here! over and over. Billy makes us want the Samurai Shark knife sharpener, Zorbeez super chamois and the Bay City Slider Station burger machine, too. After a U.S. Airways flight makes a rough landing on Saturday afternoon, Mays tells his wife, Deborah, that he doesn't feel well. He mentions to a local TV station that a falling object strikes him on the head as the plane lands: All of a sudden as we hit, you know it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping. Mays tells Tampa Bay's MyFox TV, It hit me on the head. According to Sgt. Christopher Ugles, spokesman for the Tampa Police Department, a fire rescue crew finds Billy unresponsive in his Tampa, FL home at 7:45 am on Sunday morning, June 28, 2009. Billy Mays dies at 50. A Discovery Channel spokesperson says that Billy Mays leaves his wife Deborah, baby daughter and son, Billy Mays Jr. His mother lives near Pittsburgh, PA.

JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX)
Jim, It's with interest and sadness that I've watched all of the coverage these last few days of the death of Michael Jackson. He was, without a doubt, a cross-cultural phenomenon, and a huge influence on modern pop and soul music. He was a great dancer, and his performance at the 25th anniversary Motown show was beyond belief. That being said, I don't buy into the idea that his impact equaled that of Elvis and the Beatles. They set the bar for worldwide fame, and defined modern music in ways that I seriously doubt anyone else ever will. I would even place Sinatra slightly above Michael Jackson as a pop icon...to be placed in nearly the same company as Elvis, Sinatra, and the Beatles is pretty rarified company. I hope that when the furor over his death dies off, Michael Jackson will be remembered more for his dancing and music, and less for his controversial lifestyle. Yours Truly, John Hale, Mobile Magic Music "We're at the best parties!"

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) Subject: Ed, Farrah, Michael...and now Billy Mays... What the...why the...how the; is this sudden mass expiration a sign that the 'end times' are near? Nooo, sad stuff happens and it will happen to us all in time. Coming in threes and fours means nothing. Like Voltaire opined, "A witty saying means nothing." Nor does a strange, close grouping of human death. About the gagfest surrounding Michael Jackson, I am so SICK of seeing/hearing this icon of overindulgence and probable pedophilia revered by media sycophants, and compared, as I heard yesterday, as one who stands shoulder to shoulder with icons like Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and Wagner; and the jaw-dropping claim by one fawning, tear-brimmed reporter who referred to him as the 'most creative genius of the 20th and 21st centuries.' This comment was, IMO, singularly the greatest hyperbolic homage ever uttered, and simply without a single shred of evidence as to its veracity. How truly, truly sad. BLAKE LINDSAY (D/FW-Addison, TX)
In our current economic situation, every little thing we buy or do affects someone else and perhaps even their job. If This past weekend at Kroger, we need 60 W light bulbs and Bounce dryer sheets. We are in the light bulb aisle. Right next to the GE brand we normally buy is an off brand label "Everyday Value". We pick up both types of bulbs…compare the stats…they are the same except for the price. The GE bulbs are more money than the Everyday Value brand but the thing that surprises me the most is GE is made in MEXICO. The Everyday Value brand is made in the USA. So let's throw out the myth…we cannot find products you use every day that are made right here from a company in Cleveland OH! On to another aisle. Bounce Dryer Sheets. Bounce is more money…made in Canada, the Everyday Value brand…less money…MADE IN THE USA! We do laundry…the dryer sheets perform just like the Bounce Free we use for years at almost half the price! My challenge is start reading labels when you shop for everyday things. See what you find made in the USA. The job you save may be your own or your neighbors! Let's all start buying American, one light bulb at a time! Besides, you might save a little green in the process.
