HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND!

TV ANCHOR CLAIMS DEFAMATION
Wendy Corona former KPRC TV CH2 anchorperson in Houston, TX has a lawsuit against her previous employer. Wendy files her claim in Harris County District Court. In April 2006, she signs a four-year contract with KPRC that allows the TV station to fire her after the first two years if they give her at least a 90 day written notice. On January 5, 2009 KPRC's GM tells Wendy she is let go. On that same day, he asks a KPRC employee to send out a memo that states Corona is fired. Word spreads fast to other media about her departure. Rumors begin to circulate that KPRC releases her in a budget crunch. Jan Fox, Corona's attorney, says, Essentially she was blindsided. One day she was on the air and the next day she wasn't, without notice. It's terrific damage to your public reputation to suddenly be jerked off the air due to circumstances beyond your control. Whatever their internal reasons for what they did, they dishonored her contract. Wendy's lawsuit alleges lost wages, benefits and damage to her reputation.

WRITER SUES FOX
HuffPo reports that Roger Friedman, former FoxNews.com entertainment columnist, has a lawsuit against News Corporation. He wants $5.18 million in damages for what he claims is wrongful termination, tortuous interference and libel defamation. In April 2009, News Corporation fires Friedman after his review of 20th Century Fox's Wolverine leaks online.
SIRIUS XM'S ROCKET IS READY
We all know that AM radio towers stand for decades but they do need paint and new light bulbs ever so often. Not so for satellite radio. Their signal relays that orbit the earth need replacement on a regular basis. Boeing makes all 4 of XM’s satellites but after the merger they switch to the Loral FS-1300 model that Sirius uses. Sirius FM-5 is ready to fire into space on top of a Russian-made Proton M rocket from the Bakonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. This is once the launch site of the Soviet space program but now is a commercial venture. Kazakhstan is a former member of the Soviet Union. It lies adjacent to Russia's western border on the east bank of the Caspian Sea. The country is mostly barren, flat, dry and hot. Perfect place to launch a rocket. Blast off is 1:10 am Tuesday, June 30, 2009 in Kazakhstan, which in the USA is 3:10 pm ET on Monday, June 29. Bon voyage!

GENE STUMP (Baltimore, MD) Hello Jim, Many thanks for forwarding my info to Dan and putting me on your mailing list. I was reading a bunch of the older newsletters as my Google searches for Dan took me there. You are doing a fine job. Take care; I will be back in touch. Gene
DERRILL E. HOLLY (Arlington, VA) Hey buddy, how are you doing really? I’ve been concerned about you for weeks. You surviving the Texas heat, okay? Derrill E. Holly Arlington, Va.
JUNE 2009 is just about the hottest month on record for Houston, TX. We have several days of 102 degrees. One day last week hits 104 on the scale. Monday is 103 degrees. Our high humidity makes it skyrocket even higher. We have almost no rain for 2 months. Finally, the other night when I head to the grocery store 2 months of rain come down all at once. As I try to unlock the car door to go home, high wind reverses my umbrella. Rain drenches me and the groceries. After I get home, lightning and thunder knocks out our electricity. But still have candles and flashlights from Hurricane Ike. Life on the Texas coast is exciting.

MARTY AMBROSE (Houston, TX) Dear Jim, I got your e-mail just as Mary & I were leaving on vacation. We drove Mary's CTS to Boulder, then to Angel Fire, and then got in late Sunday. I just visited your (newsletter) and I am astounded at your wealth of knowledge, and access to what seems to be everything we need to know about radio and entertainment. Are you on Facebook? You should be, and be my friend. I have virtually everyone in Houston radio posting on my wall all the time. You should be doing the same, and promoting your (newsletter). Presently, I am sort of retired, (at 68) and working part time over at KUHF 88.7, doing traffic reports every weekday from 3 to 7. I'm rubbing elbows over there with radio veterans John Proffitt, John Steel, Alex Rodriguez, Jack Williams, ED Mayberry, Paul Prendergast, Bob Stevenson, etc. I'm glad you found me--keep in touch! You can e-mail me also at mambrose@kuhf.org afternoons. Best regards, Marty
DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) Subject: Ed, Farrah, Michael...and now Billy Mays... PUHLEEZE...I'm sensitive to the loss of any human life, particularly when they are taken early, and that is certainly the case now, as it is with the addition of Billy Mays; but let's step back from this gilded wake for Michael Jackson and try a liberal dose of objectivity here...MJ had allowed himself to be physically maimed into a ghoulish 'Thriller' zombie-look-alike...and with the able assistance of a team of enablers, was clearly doped-up with continued impunity and had been for years with God-knows-what uppers and downers. Now he has sadly followed the pitiable death march of Anna Nicole Smith, Elvis Presley, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin and legions of other victims of early fame and arrested adolescence. Unfettered indulgence with impunity from apparent consequence destroys absolutely, and with certainty in its own cruel time. How truly, truly sad. Dan McCurdy - KLIF/KBOX, Dallas; WMEX, Boston; 2004 Texas Radio Hall of Fame Inductee; freelance ad/PR writer
DWIGHT COOK (Houston, TX) Subject: Rag for radio production job post. Hi Jim, I appreciate your mailing and look forward to reading it - you are a bright spot in a rather dull world of media. Thanks for Jim Rose Remembers Radio! What publication is the prime place to list job openings for a radio production person these days? My company, Sound Works is looking for a great bilingual - production person fluent in Spanish and English who knows protools. Just not sure what radio people read these days? If you or your connections have suggestions, just email me at dcook@soundworks.com - thanks.
BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Good evening Jim: Yes, I too miss those golden days of radio...period. I sincerely hope you are a new inductee of TRHF as you deserve it. BOB & Sonny Lee
WALTER HAMMOCK (Houston, TX) Jim your readers might find it interesting that Black Magic Woman was actually written by Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac back in the day when they were a "blues band".
TRIVIA ANSWER: Legendary Wall of Sound producer Phil Spector plays guitar on The Rolling Stones' 1965 tune Play With Fire.
BLAKE LINDSAY (Dallas-Addison, TX) Hi Jim! I would like you to please consider writing a story or two, for our San Antonio Radio Memories. It is currently a very enjoyable website, and will as well mature right into a book in the next year or two. Some very fun stories and I know that you are capable of writing me right under the table anytime you want, so please go for it. I look forward to your contributions. No, I'm not a recruiter, but we want this to be a real hoot, and so far, it sure is. Your Friend, Blake Lindsay, Blazin' Blake Productions: Hearing is Believing! (www.blazinblake.com/)
ISAAC ASIMOV (January 2, 1920-April 6, 1992) If my doctor told me I had only six minutes to live, I wouldn't brood. I'd type a little faster.
