ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
NEWSROOM WAGES FALL
The Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) in association with Hofstra University does a survey of newsroom payrolls. For the first time since the survey begins they discover that 2008 newsroom salaries drop. Today, due to the economy, there are many staff and salary cuts throughout the broadcast news industry. Along with those deflations, radio news actual salaries tumble 1.8% in 2008. TV news salaries plunge 4%. RTNDA reports that most of the salary cuts are at the upper end of the food chain in radio-TV newsrooms. Government figures indicate that current inflation is 3.8%. RTNDA says real wages which adjust for inflation for radio news staffs fall 5.6% while TV news pay dips 8.2%.

SCHULTZ GOES LIVE
KQLX FM Sheyenne Valley Broadcasting Fargo-Moorhead-Lisbon, ND flips from Country to Talk on March 18, 2009 as 106.1 FM Talk with talkers Don Imus, Dennis Miller, Jake Weber, Glenn Beck, Jason Lewis, and Tony Bruno. In July 2009, The Ed Schultz national radio show joins KQLX FM's lineup. What's ironic is that KFGO-790 (The Mighty 790) in Fargo refuses to air the Ed Schultz national show live. Instead airs it late at night with a tape delay. The new live time slot on KQLX FM gives Ed Schultz listeners in Fargo a chance to call in and talk to him on the air. Ed Schultz spends the last twenty years as a local talk show host in Fargo.
TRAFFIC BY LAND, AIR AND SEA
The westbound lanes of the I-90 floating bridge that enters Seattle, WA shut down. This leaves just two HOV lanes to get into the city. Traffic piles up. Once again, radio comes to the rescue. Bonneville News-Talk KIRO FM launches its large S.S. 97.3 luxury racing yacht to patrol from the waters of Seattle’s Lake Union to help guide stranded motorists up above on the bridge. PD Rod Arquette proudly proclaims, When it comes to traffic information, 97.3 KIRO FM is coming to the aid of Seattle commuters by land, air and sea!

FRANK HALEY (Albuquerque, NM) HI JIM, Glad you like the doggie, he's really smart, he learned to sit on command in 1 day, and I keep him in a small kennel at night in our sun room, working on "house training" and what really amazes me is that he'll go in it, when I stand next to and tell him to go in. I'm sure he doesn't want to go in it, but he will. My next goal is get him to heal, probably a little harder. Any suggestions on how to train him to "heal" on a leash??? Hope you are doing well, keep in touch, Frank

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Jim: Breaking News - Mickey Gilley injured in fall. Yesterday's Branson News says Gilley was transferred to Houston for further treatment but the real story lies in the surgery he had last year. He may just forget to show up for shows. Made his first record in 1956! Operated Gilley's Club here (Pasadena, TX) 1971-1989 & featured in movie "Urban Cowboy. Some trivia: he was a pilot...had appendectomy 7/3/2003...has statue named in his honor in hometown of Ferriday, LA. Cousin of Jerry Lee Lewis & Rev. Jimmy Swaggart. Opened his Branson Theater April 1990. Mickey Leroy Gilley born 3/19/36 in Natchez, MS...raised in Ferriday, LA. BOB
TRACY PITCOX (Brady, TX) Subject: Mickey Gilley Injured In Fall. Country music legend Mickey Gilley was seriously injured in a fall in Branson, Mo. on Sunday and underwent surgery on Tuesday. The 73-year-old has since been flown to Houston, Texas for further treatment but is not paralyzed, according to Fox News. "He is absolutely not paralyzed," his rep said. "He did have a fall and surgery on his back, there was some bruising, and he was flown to Texas for physical therapy, but his doctors are satisfied with his recovery. He will then be flown home in a jet. They just want to make sure it won't tire him out too much." Gilley's condition does remain serious, however. "When you have surgery on your back it's not a mild thing, it is serious, but he'll have physical therapy because of stiffness and they expect him to be fine," added the rep. "His doctors are satisfied with his recovery everyday. He is 73 so it will take time and therapy to get back to jumping around the stage which is what he likes to do." Gilley was scheduled to perform in Branson, but the shows have been canceled pending his recovery. Tracy Pitcox (www.heartoftexascountry.com)
JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) Subject: update on Sam Pate. Promised to keep you informed. Janet said Sam is taking radiation five days a week, for six weeks, for the brain tumors, which have grown larger. The medication for his head is affecting his heart, which the heart medication is affecting his kidneys. Janet says she doesn't know how much longer he can stay at home, but she will keep trying as long as she can. She came home from work and the house was all smoked up. (he has been told not to cook) He had decided to make some French toast. The Eggs were in a bowl, the bread was on the counter and he was standing at the stove cooking the Egg shells. This is just one of several things he has done like this. Please continue to pray for Janet she will have the strength and courage to hold up to working and taking care of him.
JERRY MILLER [Mueller] (Houston-Kingwood, TX) Subject: San Antonio Radio 1957-1963. Hey Jim, how you doin'? I don't know if you'll want to publish this in your Remembers Radio, mostly because it may be too long! Lots of talk about who did what in radio from different sources. I recently purchased Lynn Woolley’s book 'The LAST Great Days of Radio. He tells a lot of good stories and its an accurate history of major and middle market Top 40 Radio in Texas...but, to me, THIS epistle you are about to read will hi-lite the FIRST Great Days of Radio, as I remember it! I hope got most of this correctly! Jerry Miller (Mueller), Kingwood, Texas. Comments to: skybluejer@cebridge.net. Stay tuned. For the next several issues of JRRR Jerry describes San Antonio Radio from 1957-1963 as he experiences it.

TRIVIA ANSWER: In the 1930s, Jazz musicians begin to call their gigs apples. New York city is their biggest gig. So NYC becomes The Big Apple.
CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Subject: Louis Bellson. Hi, I see we have lost another musician, Louis Bellson. When I would be up late at night always liked his work he and his orchestra did for the talk show. Made me wish they had given him more time to perform, I felt the same with Doc Severinsen when working with Johnny Carson. I generally did not like talk shows on TV since they dealt more with personalities than issues. Dick Cavett was different, I liked when he interviewed C. P. Snow, Arthur Miller and others. David Frost also dealt with issues more than the other talk show hosts. I watched a movie with Charlotte Rampling, Under the Sand about a lady who goes on a vacation with her husband. He goes for a walk and never returns. It was interesting movie I would recommend, even though, an older one. I am ordering some obscure titles through NetFlix. Charles George
STEVEN WRIGHT (December 6, 1955-p) Whenever I think of the past, it brings back so many memories.
