DALLAS COWBOYS NEW STATE OF THE ART STADIUM
We NFL fans experience the longest waits of our lives in between seasons. From January to September seems like an eternity. For the 2009 season, the Dallas Cowboys vacate their famous hole in the roof stadium in the suburb of Irving for fancy new billion dollar digs in nearby Arlington, TX that make all other stadiums obsolete. Remember when we attend Dallas Cowboys football games for only $7 a ticket? That's in the 1970s.

JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) Dear Jim, I had researched for a long time a good dog to have with children, and purchased a Springer Spaniel who was such a loving and gentle animal that we all adored her. She lived to be fourteen and died of a cancerous tumor. After we acquired Susie, who was bred in Sioux City, Iowa, full name: Sioux City Sue Webster, I learned that highly bred dogs, especially her breed often came with special problems...one of which was a fallen uterus. I had hoped to let her have a litter of puppies because I had a dachshund years before who went through several false pregnancies, and died after being spayed. Just wanted our Susie to be happy and healthy.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Jim: Just learned that country artist Mel McDaniel is hospitalized at 66 w/a heart attack in Nashville. Mel's heart attack was 6/16/09. This singer/songwriter/guitarist began performing in 1957 in native Oklahoma & formed his own group in early 60's; worked Alaska clubs 1971 & to Nashville in 1973. His records on Capital made Billboard charts 25 times, 1977-1988. First top 10 hit, "Louisiana Saturday Night" in 1981. He won a Grammy for his #1 hit in 1984: "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On". He started poor in OK but made it to the Opry as member in 1986. He suffered life-threatening injuries previously in a fall into an orchestra-pit while in concert at Lafayette, LA in 1996, but did recover to resume his career. Let's hope for the best in Mel's recovery this time, too. From the Southwest Outpost, your friend, BOB
DON LINCOLN (Austin-Lago Vista, TX) Subject: KPCN & Big 'D' Jamboree - 1964. My dad, a Dallas native (as I am) passed away almost 12 yrs ago and I thought all his personal effects had been removed from his lady friend’s home. But now, her health is failing and I visited yesterday, at her request, to retrieve a few additional miscellaneous items found stored in her attic. Among these was an old 45-rpm record box full of 60’s era Country-Western music, mostly without sheaths. One of the few original sheaths still intact contains the hit "She Thinks I Still Care", featuring a young George Jones with a flat-top haircut. Among Dad’s collection of oldies was a KPCN program for a broadcast of the Big "D" Jamboree at the Sportatorium in late August and early September, 1964. The dates of the 2 shows are printed below the words ‘Big "D" Jamboree’, but the year isn’t. So I had to use a virtual calendar program on a website to back-track and figure out what year it was that August 29th and September 5th both fell on Saturday. Anyway, I was originally going to e-mail you to try finding out what year this program was, but after discovering it myself, decided to e-mail copies to you. I ran across your name while researching – best regards. Don Lincoln, SOC Class of ‘66
JOE FORD (Houston-Spring, TX) Jim. I not only nominated you for the TRHoF, I also voted you dude. Good luck!
DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) Thanks for the additional info, Jim...as they used to say back in the 20s and 30s, "You're a brick." I know you have a million things to do, and I sincerely appreciate the 'extra mile' you go to keep us radio heads in the information loop. Best... Dan McCurdy
KEN DOWE (Dallas, TX) As many of you know, my career in broadcasting really began when at the age of 23, I joined Gordon McLendon's legendary broadcasting empire. Gordon, literally invented Top 40, All News, EZ listening, and many other radio formats. I worked with him, side by side, in New York, in California, from San Francisco to Los Angeles to San Diego. And, with his stations in Detroit, and Chicago. From time to time with his movie interests. At one time he was Columbia Pictures largest stockholder. He's the only genius I've ever known. And, while hardly perfect, the only employer I've ever been around who always did exactly what he said he would do, and never wavered. Bob Shannon in Seattle is finishing a book on broadcasting, and the exploits of Gordon and others, and is including an audio book as well. He is using those who were closest to the various creators he profiles to voice the introduction of each of these legends. As Gordon's first and only Executive Vice President and his protégé for more than a decade, it is my honor to have been chosen to introduce the electric and eccentric Yale grad who was a Japanese linguist for the war department during WWII. When he died in 1986 Gordon McLendon had amassed a fortune of more than a half a billion dollars. Certainly not small change 25 years ago, and of considerably more value now. Gordon B. McLendon. A renaissance man. Ken Dowe; Broadcast Xcellence, Inc.
TRIVIA ANSWER: British Reggae octet UB40's name stands for Unemployment Benefits form 40.
JERRY MILLER [Mueller] (Houston-Kingwood, TX) Subject: San Antonio Radio 1957-1963. It all started, as far as Top 40 is concerned, in late '56 or maybe, for sure 1957 when Gordon McClendon forsook the Liberty Network, and conceived the 1st Top 40 Format at KLIF in Dallas. (Call letters from Oak CLIFF suburb where most of the active younger audience lived.) Then in 1957, he changed KTSA in San Antonio to Top 40 with a great staff headed by National Program Director Don Keyes. KTSA's local PD was DJ Bob Cooper, with a great on-air group of air personalities. San Antonio's KONO still had 'block" programming, Country, Popular, News and even some leftover Live Studio programs. KTSA took the city by storm, as did all the other McLendon stations in Texas and Louisiana, followed by other stations in other out-of-state markets. Todd Storz Stations copied the idea with KOIL-Omaha, NB and others like KFJZ. KNUZ, KBOX etc. I believe Atlanta, GA was next to win with Top 40, mostly led by one Kent Burkhart. Also, Don Burden's Star Stations joined in. Jerry Miller (Mueller), Kingwood, Texas. Comments to: skybluejer@cebridge.net. Stay tuned. For the next several issues of JRRR Jerry describes San Antonio Radio from 1957-1963 as he experiences it.
