RANIERI HEADS WEST
One of the original meteorologists on the now-extinct NBC Weather Plus leaves NBC's NYC building and heads west to join NBC KNTV TV in the San Francisco-San Jose, CA market. We remember Ranieri as he anchors weather for MSNBC and the Today show also as a field reporter on the really big weather stories. NBCU shutters Weather Plus in December 2008 after its purchase of The Weather Channel for $3.5 billion. The original Weather Plus launches in 2004 with meteorologists Ranieri, Bill Karins, Elise Finch and Jackie Meretsky. Karins is the last standing original member on NBC News. Ranieri updates his status on Facebook with the line Let the new adventure begin!

TOM BIGBY (Chicago, IL/Dallas, TX) Jim, actually that is a misprint, I am not adding the AM to my list of stations, I basically deal with the CBS FM Sports stations, as you read we are active in working on building a group of FM Sports stations in selected markets across the country, One of them being KRLD FM in Dallas... Gavin is a good guy and will do well in Houston, get to know him...

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Good evening Jim: Ironically, I knew about her death (Dee Dee Bellson) 2 days ago, but info I had only said she died in VA. That prompted my locating details today. Was aware of the jazz drummer's death (Louis Bellson) on 2/14, but it took me a while to connect the dots. Soon as I get updates on Ferlin, Mel & Mickey, I'll give you a shout from over here at the "Southwest Outpost". Did you see Andrew Dansby's column on music commentary this AM on natives of Checotah, OK in Chronicle?? Excellent piece on natives Carrie Underwood & Mel McDaniel. Learned writer was from Ashland, KY & couldn’t let that go byl So I dashed him off a lengthy story about his hometown (which is 21 miles from mine). Perhaps I'll hear from him. Yes, weekend too short & too hot; we fly to Phoenix Sept 24, so maybe we can cool off there! Make it a great week. BOB & Sonny Lee
GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Subject: More on Ernie Ashworth. This fellow's mother & I went to school together at Union Grove High School near Longview. I have never met him but he found my email address from the column I wrote for Texas Escapes. We started communicating. I sent him the story on Ernie Ashworth not knowing he had worked for him. Below is the email I received from him this evening. 'Ernie Ashworth owned the radio station I was on from 1994-1997. WYXE "Wixie in Dixie" in Gallatin, TN. In 1994 I stopped by to purchase some advertising for my real estate business. Ernie was a "hands on" type of owner. I asked him if he had any openings on the air, Ernie said no but that he needed someone to sell advertising. So in my free time I went out and found all kinds of businesses wanting to do some radio advertising. Ernie couldn't believe it! I kept selling spots. The next week he asked which on air slot I wanted. He said everyone of our advertisers is people you found, you deserve to be on air. I was the morning man coming on at 6:00 am, M-F. The first two hours I played Bluegrass Gospel. Then three hours of classic country. I had a ball! The characters on our CD were on my show. I also did a 6-11:00 am All Bluegrass Show on Saturday morning. Ernie was tickled things had improved. He told me that it was a good thing I came along when I did, the station was going broke. He said if it hadn't been for Butch Starkey, Ol' Ernie would have been broke! We became great friends. Ellis Butch'
CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Hi, I just bought a book Violin For Dummies, I hate anything that calls a person a dummy but I needed a book to help me, even though, I already can read music to some extent from playing the guitar and mandolin. I knew a person who liked KRMH though I thought K98 was a better station. Like I always liked KFAD better than KNUS. I was visiting KPPC-FM and I mentioned KNUS and the two announcers there both said, "Gordon McLendon he is a real Liberal..." It was in the basement of the Pasadena Presbyterian Church. I noticed Mitch Ryder had signed the wall and so had Paul Revere and others. Charles George

TRIVIA ANSWER: Sergeant Joe Friday's L.A. police badge number in TV's Dragnet series is #714.
JERRY MILLER [Mueller] (Houston-Kingwood, TX) Subject: San Antonio Radio 1957-1963. KONO's owner Jack Roth made his move by hiring Bob Cooper away from KTSA and programmed KONO to compete late in 1957. January of 1958, Bob Cooper left to join Gene Autry's Golden West Stations as PD in Portland, Oregon! There was then a DJ slot open at KONO and I was hired to join KONO from WEBC in Duluth, MN, while Herb Carl took Cooper's place as PD. Herb and Howard Edwards started to rule the morning ratings and Charlie Van and myself the afternoons, over taking and beating KTSA pretty soundly. Herb Carl left to go to KTRH-Houston, and Roth promoted me to PD in the spring of '59. Jerry Miller (Mueller), Kingwood, Texas. Comments to: skybluejer@cebridge.net Stay tuned. For the next several issues of JRRR Jerry describes San Antonio Radio from 1957-1963 as he experiences it.
JACK GALE (WCBM-680, WSID-1010, WITH-1230, WWIN-1400, WMEX-1510, WAYS-610) [book: Same Time, Same Station] Radio was where I belonged. I could feel it.
