ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

THE VOICE AMERICA TRUSTS CEASES
CBS News reports on Friday, July 17, 2009 that legendary newsman Walter Cronkite dies at 92. Members of the fourth estate revere Walter as the gold standard for journalists. After a private funeral at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts' Avery Fisher Hall in NY, Walter Cronkite returns to his home state of Missouri to lie beside his beloved wife of 64 years, Mary Elizabeth Maxwell whom he knows as Betsy. A private service for Walter is on Thursday at St. Bartholomew’s Church on Park Avenue where his wife’s funeral takes place in 2005. One of the residents of the United Nations Plaza building where Cronkite lives recalls him as a kind-hearted, down-to-earth neighbor despite his worldwide status. Lila Menowitz (75) says He was the sweetest man.

BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID

Do you realize that it's now the 40th anniversary of the movie Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid? Never crosses my mind until cable TV channel AMC brings it to our attention on Saturday morning, July 18, 2009. This is one of my favorite movies. Paul Newman, Robert Redford and the lovely Katharyn Ross bring the film to life for us anxious viewers. In 1969 when I'm Program Director of KBUC FM-AM in San Antonio, TX we have a contest where the winners get to attend a private movie premiere of Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid. We completely fill the movie house. B.J. Thomas's tune Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head is the theme song and the melody rides high on the KBUC music chart. For decades I hear the phrase that the older a person gets the faster time flies. Well, I'll be 66 on November 16, 2009. Nowadays one year seems to zoom by like 10 years. Just cannot comprehend that it's 40 years ago when we premiere the wonderful movie Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid in the Alamo City. Time sure does fly by fast when we have so much fun.

TRIVIA QUESTION:
What is the inspiration for The Who's Pete Townshend to begin to shatter his guitar on stage at concerts? The answer appears below.

JOYCE [J.C.] WEBSTER (Mena, AR) Hey Jim, Looks like the big ceremony will be down your way...guess we need to remind those feet draggers that Saturday is the last day to vote for their nominees. When Ken Dowe said that Gordon McLendon always did what he said he would do, that reminded me of one of my nominees, Dick Oppenheimer. Over the years that has always been the trait I most valued in someone I worked with and when Dick said it, it was money in the bank!!! I personally want to congratulate each person nominated because he or she did something right. So many great talents have come out of the big State of Texas and they just keep coming. Many of us worked in radio because we just loved it, didn't we? It might have been rough at times, but it was SO worth it mostly because of the others we worked with or met along the way. Just reading the names of all those nominated brings back good memories for me. Best wishes to you, Jim, and to each of the nominees! JC

ED BRANDON [Houston, TX]
Subject: Walter Cronkite. Ed Brandon treasures the years early in his career at KNOW (The Mighty 1490!) in Austin. He's reminded today that Walter Cronkite preceded him at KNOW many years before. RIP Walter. RIP KNOW!

DERRILL E. HOLLY (Arlington, VA) Walter Cronkite was the best. He will be missed.

T.J. CALLAHAN [Donna Croft] (Houston, TX) The Voice has been silenced. RIP Walter.

MIKE HARTMAN (Ft. Worth-Joshua, TX) Jim...I guess of all the newscasters of that era...Chet Huntley, David Brinkley, etc...Walter Cronkite ranks number one with me. Ii was obvious during the coverage of the Kennedy assassination that Mr. Cronkite could not hold back the emotional tears brought on by that tragic day. I believe many Americans became closer to him after that. Here was this nationally known newscaster expressing on "live" TV his heartbreak before a stunned and grieving nation. His weekly presence in our living rooms meant more than ever before. He was like a close friend we could trust. May God comfort and bless his family. And thank you the Cronkite family for sharing him with us for all those years.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Jim: Thanks for this bulletin; I had opportunity to meet Walter Cronkite at his book signing appearance in Phoenix about ten years ago. Believe he has a journalism school named in his honor at AZ State Univ., Tempe. Sad news indeed today. BOB

GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Subject: More on Ernie Ashworth. This fellow's mother & I went to school together at Union Grove High School near Longview. Below is (part of) the email I received from him this evening. ‘Whenever anybody had a parade I would drive our WYXE Yugo. Ernie actually had two cars and used one for the parts. There are very few Yugos. It was always a hit! In one parade I put a sheep in the front passenger side, got a lot of laughs. We didn't toss any candies. I would say do you want some air candy? Toss a handful of air at them. Ernie had me reservations every Friday night to go to the Grand Ole Opry. I was shocked at how many of them listened to me daily. Ellis Butch'

RICK UPTON (San Antonio, TX) Jim can you add me to your daily, again…. New email is
rupton@autogross.net Things are going well. Rick Upton; VP/General Manager; Mobile Marketing Associates/a division of AUTOGROSS MARKETING CONSULTANTS, LLC (www.autogross.net)

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX)
It is like Jazz where performers claimed they did better in Europe than at home. You don't miss water until... I think the young kids miss out when they toss something aside because of age, but then we do also. There is money in being new even if it is repackaged... Like Classical Music stations that remove the slow movements of a concerto and play only pieces that are well known and upbeat. I like making homegrown music but I know there is no market, so have made money doing other things like working in the grocery industry. One year a friend had me be his helper doing pest control. Charles

TRIVIA ANSWER:
While he plays his guitar in a pub with low ceilings he accidentally breaks the neck of his guitar. Fans love it so much that it becomes a regular part of his stage performances.

JERRY MILLER [Mueller] (Houston-Kingwood, TX)
Subject: San Antonio Radio 1957-1963. Charlie Van left (KONO) and took a PM Drive spot for more pay at KTSA, and I then hired Marc Avery from WXYZ Detroit. Marc did 6-8AM, two hour shifts .Howard Edwards 8-10, then Marc again from 10-noon, back to Howard noon to 2PM. As PD, I did 2 hours 2-4 and then Doug China, later replaced with Don Couser 4-7PM. Those 2 hour shifts kept those guys fresh and up all the time, and held their listeners longer!! It also was a time for original on-air promotions, like Treasure Hunts, Comedic Horse Racing Games, Turkey giveaways, etc. and remotes from the KONO Alamobile, a glassed-in house trailer that was a complete DJ Studio on wheels, broadcasting as long as ten days 24-7 during Fiesta Week from in front of the Alamo. Nothing like it since! Jerry Miller (Mueller), Kingwood, Texas. Comments to:
skybluejer@cebridge.net. Stay tuned. For the next several issues of JRRR Jerry describes San Antonio Radio from 1957-1963 as he experiences it.

MIKE SHEPPARD [Veteran San Francisco, CA radio DJ]
