ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

PAUL MCCARTNEY SELLS OUT
On August 15, 1965 The Beatles play the first major arena show in Rock history at NY's Shea Stadium in front of more than 55,000 fans, most of them hysterical, screaming teenage girls. 44 years later in July 2009 Paul McCartney performs at the new baseball field that replaces Shea Stadium - Citi Field. Sir Paul sells out all three concerts. On Friday, July 17th to christen the new Citi Field concert site Mr. Piano Man, Billy Joel, joins McCartney on The Beatles' early 1964 hit I Saw Her Standing There. What makes this such a special event is that The Beatles perform the first major concert at Shea Stadium, the final concert to close out the ballpark plus the first concert to open the brand new Citi Field. McCartney performs The Beatles fall 1969 ballad Something on a ukulele that the late Fab Four band mate George Harrison hands down to him. In the tender tune Here Today Paul makes reference to Beatles member the late John Lennon. He dedicates his #1 summer 1973 hit My Love to his beloved late wife Linda. Once again, Sir Paul McCartney makes Rock history.

FREE SPEACH DIES IN AUSTIN, TX

As we report to you in JRRR issue #688 Talk radio KLBJ-590 Austin, TX suspends for 2 weeks its hosts Todd Jeffries and Don Pryor after references to illegal aliens from Mexico as wetbacks. After a backlash from the Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Austin City Council Member Mike Martinez, Pryor and Jeffries both apologize for the incident. But KLBJ goes ahead and suspends their show unpaid for 2 weeks. Here's an update. KLBJ now totally cancels their show. In a statement, a KLBJ official declares the cancelation of the show is the right thing to do for our employees, our station, our company, Emmis Austin Radio, and for the community. The owner of KLBJ is Emmis Austin Radio, a division of Indianapolis-based Emmis Communications Corporation. A comment from a reader in the Austin Business Journal tells it like it is: Adios KLBJ! Gutless move. Your willingness to lose your audience in order appease a group of idiots who never have been and furthermore never will be your audience is appalling.

TOM ELLIS (Boston-East Sandwich-Cape Cod, MA) Subject: remembering S.A. radio. Reading Jerry Miller's (Mueller's) history of KONO during its heyday is a great treat for those of us who were fortunate enough to be there during those years. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to "relive" that experience. Some of the great talents Jerry mentions are not with us physically any more. But how could anyone who knew them ever forget Howard Edwards and Charlie Van and the magic they brought to the airwaves? Remembering Walter Cronkite is another pleasure. I first met him personally while filming an hour long vignette on Martha's Vineyard during the "Jaws" summer of '74. It was Sunday morning and my producer, Marty Calner, said..."I wish we could get Walter Cronkite to do a segment with us." I told him that Walter seems like a real nice guy, so why don't you call him and ask, which he did, from a pay phone at Gay Head. Walter's mother answered the phone and said that Walter and Betsy were at church, but she'd have him call when they returned. Sure enough, about half an hour later, Betsy called and told us to meet them at the dock at Vineyard Haven at 2pm. Once there, Walter invited us aboard his yacht, and he and Betsy provided a wonderful segment for our production that aired on WBZ-TV in Boston. Tom Ellis, E. Sandwich, Cape Cod, Ma.

JERRY MILLER [Mueller] (Houston-Kingwood, TX)
San Antonio Radio 1957-1963. I moved to KLIF Dallas for a year in '61, and then back to KONO in '62-'64, but their 1,000 watts could no longer compete with KTSA's big signal, so on to KNUZ I went in '65 for 4 years, and then to KILT in 1969 for, count 'em, 28 years as Sales Rep and Voice-over Talent -Houston. Now retired for the past 11 years and so sorry for the demise of the greatness of the old Top 40 Radio Days...Happy Days...I call em! They surely were for me! Jerry Miller (Mueller), Kingwood, Texas. Comments to:
skybluejer@cebridge.net. Stay tuned. For the next several issues of JRRR Jerry describes San Antonio Radio from 1957-1963 as he experiences it.

JO INTERRANTE [Dallas, TX]
Jim...Thank you for the Birthday wishes! I'm already up to my ears with candles...chomping on them before they're aflame...they don't taste as yummy en fuego! Ciao!

WALTER HAMMOCK's birthday is Monday, July 20th. But we cannot play The Crests' Christmas 1958 hit 16 Candles for him. How about we sneak in Led Zeppelin's 1973 tune Over the Hills and Far Away?

WALTER HAMMOCK (Houston, TX) Jim I ain't no girl so play Clarence FROGMAN Henry "Ain't got no home" :-) NO JOKE we could do a hit parade with just those songs (Louisiana) and thanks again for the birthday wishes.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Jim: Just learned Friday evening of death of Gordon Waller, one-half of rock/bop duo Peter & Gordon, on July 16, 2009 in CT from cardiac arrest. Gordon was born in Scotland on 6/4/45 & the duo formed in London. They had about a dozen chart hits 1964-67 & their only #1 was "A World Without Love" in 1964; "Lady Godiva" made it to #6 in 1966. After the group's demise, Peter Asher went into record production and artist management. BOB & Sonny Lee

TRIVIA ANSWER: Carlos Santana's father is a Mariachi violinist. So, Carlos plays the violin at an early age, sometimes with his father's mariachi orchestra. After his family moves to Tijuana he becomes interested in guitar. Santana inducts into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX)
Jim..."Once upon a time there was a tavern, Where we used to raise a glass or two. Remember how we laughed away the hours, And dreamed of all the great things we would do? "Those were the days my friend, We thought they'd never end, We'd sing and dance forever and a day. We'd live the life we choose, We'd fight and never lose. "For we were young and sure to have our way...La la la la...La la la la. Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days..." Yep, Jimbo...those were the days, pal...I miss 'em all and still Love 'em all... Dan McCurdy. Texas Radio Hall of Fame inductee 2004, KLIF, KBOX-Dallas, WMEX-Boston

MARY HOPKIN has the hit version of the timeless song Those Were the Days which releases on August 30, 1968. It's the month and year that I leave A.H. Belo's 50,000 watt clear channel Adult Contemporary WFAA-820 in Dallas, TX to take on programming duties at Tom Turner's Country KBUC FM-AM in San Antonio. The catchy tune causes us to look back and remember the golden days of radio, our youth and romantic aspirations. The writer of the great song's lyrics is Gene Raskin. Gene puts English words to the Russian melody Dorogoi dlinnoyu (Endless Road) that Boris Fomin (1900-1948) writes with verses by poet Konstantin Podrevskii. Wikipedia says the first known recording of the Slavic song is by Alexander Vertinsky in the 1920s. Paul McCartney produces Hopkin's recording. It rises to #1 on the UK singles chart and hits #2 in the USA. Mary Hopkin's tune Those Were the Days My Friend means a whole lot to me.

GEORGE BERNARD SHAW (1856-1950)
Reminiscences make one feel so deliciously aged and sad.
