ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
CLEAR CHANNEL DITCHES DARK RADIO
In the beginning Clear Channel Radio in San Antonio, TX buys handfuls of radio stations all across America which grow to a total of 1229 frequencies. The bankers at CCR cannot run certain radio stations properly plus cannot sell them due to the current financial crunch so CCR donates 4 AM properties in Arkansas, Minnesota, Mississippi and Virginia to the Minority Media and Telecommunications Counsel in nearby Washington, DC through the MMTC-Clear Channel Ownership Diversity Initiative program. All of this goes to support the minority ownership initiative. The group includes: KYHN-1650 Fort Smith, AR; WTFX-610 Winchester, VA; daytimer KMFX-1190 Rochester-Wabasha, MN and WHJA-890 Laurel, MS. Sounds pretty good on the surface but not a single one of these radio stations is on the air plus the taxman cometh. Also, takes lots of money to get these small market radio stations back on the air. Another expensive consideration is the fact that KMFX loses the site for its tower. No wonder CCR wants to ditch these D-O-A radio stations. CCR says this is just the beginning of its benevolences. Does CCR donate more radio assets? Only the shadow knows. Don't touch that radio dial.

YOUNG AUCTION FALLS FLAT
The auction of Young Broadcasting's TV stations in 10 markets on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 falls by the wayside. The federal bankruptcy court says that the debtors determined that the auction is not necessary. The creditors' $220 million bid may win a takeover subject to a judge's ruling. Gray Television will manage 7 of the 10 Young TV stations. Young Broadcasting continues to operate its remaining three stations. Vincent Young continues as the Chairman-CEO.

TOM ELLIS (Boston-East Sandwich-Cape Cod, MA) Thanks, Jim. I sure do miss those days, just as you keep reminding us of how much you enjoyed, and now miss your wonderful experiences as a prime mover and shaker in a prime medium during a prime time. Thank you for continuing to keep all of those things so relevant to us now that we have the time to reflect and remember. Tom

BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Subject: I'm still here. I thought I'd better drop you a line and let you know what's up. Not much, actually. I've been doing some work with Audience Bakery, a start-up radio syndication operation. Phil Hall and some of the other refugees from ABC Radio are involved. They have several formats and more than a few affiliates. It could be big someday. I've also done some work with the VNR-1 agency. Jack Trammel, formerly of KRLD, KXAS and a few other Texas news organizations has a good little shop. One of my favorite accomplishments was showing them how to make a car smoke for an anti-pollution PSA. I have been following with concern the fate of the Todd and Don Show...which I understand has now been canceled. Todd stays on as news director of KLBJ. I wish him well. He was well-liked during his short term at KRLD a few years back. I tried out for a reality show. I got one call back, but I guess they didn't see what they were looking for in the second interview because it didn't go past that. Take care, Jim, and keep us posted on the canine situation. You need more barks in your life. Bob
JERRY MILLER [Mueller] (Houston-Kingwood, TX) San Antonio Radio 1957-1963. There were many other contests that later spread across the nation from their origins at KONO and KTSA. Texas Radio at that lime led the nation with the innovations of Top 40! We had a 'Hooper Week' promotion the first week of every month when the phone Hooper surveys were taken! KONO passed KTSA slightly, so McLendon made a huge mistake, changing those great call letters from KTSA to KAKI (thinking 'KHAKI' would gain the military listeners in S.A.) He even brought in Super LA DJ's like Gary Owens and Elliot Fields as temp DJ's, but to no avail. McClendon was soon losing in Hooper ratings 45 to 15 in the mornings and 40 to 12 in PM to KONO. It became a giant joke as 'kaki' meant something close to 'sheep dung' in Spanish!! It was really laughable. A few years later, there were many staff changes at KONO. Marc moved to Tucson AZ, Doug China, became Charlie Douglas & the Trucker's Road Show all-nite from New Orleans, Don Couser became an Ad Agency partner, from KTSA George Lester & Charlie Van both moved to Seattle at different stations, KTSA's Don French joined Chuck Blore's stations as PD in Minneapolis, and Gene Crockett went to WOAI. Ricci Ware and Bob Sinclair stayed put and did very well. Jerry Miller (Mueller), Kingwood, Texas. Comments to: skybluejer@cebridge.net. Stay tuned. For the next several issues of JRRR Jerry describes San Antonio Radio from 1957-1963 as he experiences it.
LARRY SCOTT (Dallas-Terrell, TX) I just wanted to let you know I received my stimulus package yesterday... It contained watermelon seeds, cornbread mix, and 10 coupons to Popeye's. The directions were in Spanish.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Over my life, I've spent a lot of time in D.C. & I still hear from some DJs in that area (and a beautiful girl in suburban Laurel, MD,) But that's a story for another time. I have no desire to return, but my only son lives in Leesburg, VA, out near Dulles Airport. Robert Duvall lives there on a farm & Arthur Godfrey lived there with his own private runway for flights to NY. Stop me before I get started again; my book will be at least 500 pages. Want to help me write it? BOB

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) My copy of the 45 by Mary Hopkins of Those Were The Days had Turn, Turn, Turn on the flip side. I liked her version of Turn, Turn, Turn better than the Byrds' version. I could play it on a six-string. Now that I have an electric 12-string, I like playing the version by the Byrds. When playing my 5-string banjo... I use to get KLBJ-FM on 93.7 but now can't hear it due to rim shot on the frequency. I now can make a few notes on my Kena, but still can't play any melodies worth mentioning. I have a record here by Bruce Channel that I like Mr. Bus Driver; however; the side I liked was never pushed and I thought it should have gotten airplay at the time. I thought it was his response to the Letter by the Box Tops, or maybe the Arbors. I have both versions of the Letter, also love Joe Cocker doing the song. 73, Charles, KC5RAI
GLORIA GAITHER (March 4, 1942-p) Line by line, moment by moment, special times are etched into our memories.
