ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

SNAKES ON A PLANE
Do you remember the movie Snakes on a Plane (S.O.A.P.) that hits movie theaters on August 18, 2006? Movie director David Ellis' thriller captivates audiences when throngs of snakes surge into the airplane's passenger cabin. This reminds me of what we now experience here in Houston, TX with our long drought and lack of rain. April 2009 brings too much rain all at once that overfills waterways and our many bayous. But without rain for three months our creeks, rivers and lakes are now at low levels plus our outside temperatures are high. Snakes begin to head for cooler places and water inside our homes. Our local hospitals say that snake bites are up as the reptiles roam around. We have to watch it because that baton or stick on the floor or ground might just be venomous.

WENDY ENDS RADIO

The New York Times reports that Wendy Williams who proclaims herself as the Queen of All Media decides to drop her radio show in favor of her TV exposure. Wendy says her daily radio show ends after July 31, 2009. Other media stars who end their radio endeavors to place more emphasis on their TV shows comes to mind. Bill O'Reilly recently gives up his radio show because he says the rigors of both media are too much. Bill's Fox cable TV show has the highest ratings of them all. But Sean Hannity does both a radio show and a TV show every day. As we remember, Rush Limbaugh ditches his TV show several years ago. Rush's radio show has great success.

TV ADDS NEWSCAST

We hear all the time about TV stations that cut back on their news operations when they fire anchors and reporters. If viewers have nothing of interest to watch they move on to other media. Well, Hearst Television's WDSU TV NBC CH6 in New Orleans, LA launches the area's only 4 pm newscast on September 14, 2009. The new 4 pm hour-long newscast follows The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which moves from its normal 10 am spot Monday through Friday to 3 pm weekdays on WDSU. Also Dr. Oz, a new syndicated program, debuts in fall 2009 at 2 pm. The new 4:00 pm WDSU TV news anchors are Randi Rousseau and Scott Walker.

JIMMY RABBITT (Grand Junction, CO) Jim, Well I just saw the list of inductees for the TRHoF and saw that your name wasn't on the list again. Sorry, maybe it was my bad luck that kept you out, as no one that I voted for made it...including you, John Bass and Gary Hamilton. I guess that means we'll both have to take better care of our selves, so we can try again next year. I was telling somebody just the other day about JRRR and he said it sounds like twitter before there was a twitter. Have you looked into twitter, it might be a way to add a little extra something to an already great site? Anyway, don't let it bother you, we'll get you in! Take care of yourself; a whole lot of folks are counting on JRRR and your Cashbox report. And judging from the people I talked to over the past few weeks, you couldn't have missed it by much. I have a feeling that if I hadn't gotten in at the very beginning, I would never have made it now. Keep up the good work, and thanks for the plugs... your friend, conejo

PAUL WILLIAMS (Houston, TX)
Hey, Jim…next year let’s get Harold Gunn to be our Campaign Manager!!! He knows a lot of people… I am still just honored to have been nominated for the past 4 years. NEXT YEAR WILL BE OUR YEAR!!!! Paul Williams, Senior Account Executive, Univision Radio

HAROLD GUNN (Houston, TX) Dear Jim, As awed as I am to just being informed that I will be inducted in to the Texas Radio Hall of Fame for 2009 I am equally shocked that your name was not included. Please allow me to volunteer to be your campaign manager for 2010. My friend, you deserve an honored place on that list and we shall move in that direction a.s.a.p. Most sincerely, Harold

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey City, TX) Jim: I agree w/Harold Gunn; you deserve to be in the TX Radio Hall of Fame. BOB

C.C. MCCARTNEY (Nashville-Hendersonville, TN) Me too! ~ (
www.ccmccartney.com)

JIMMY STIX (Albany-Troy-Sand Lake, NY)
Subject: Hall of Fame. I second that emotion Harold! Jim Rose truly deserves that by far!!! Jimmy Stix
(www.jimstix.com)

JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR)
Jim, you should let this guy really campaign for you next year!!! I'm excited that Dick Oppenheimer may have a chance. That would be nice. It may well be that a lot of the guys nominated who you said should already be in the TRHoF will be inducted. I'm really not that much up on Houston or Austin since all of my radio career was in Dallas. Mostly I know what I've read in the various emails to JRRR and your comments regarding Houston radio. As I've said before, it really is an honor just to be nominated. Maybe that is why a member can nominate 10, but only vote for 3...so those names make the list of nominees. Joyce

JOE FORD (Houston-Spring, TX) Jim, I can't figure this thing out. Maybe you should take Captain Harold up on his offer. I nominated AND voted for you to no avail! You deserve it, my man. Maybe 2010 is the year we kick all the low lifes in Congress out, and actually get Jim Rose in the Hall Of Fame!

MARTY AMBROSE (Houston, TX) Subject: Hall of Fame. Maybe we'll both get in there some day, Jim. I would have thought that developing the concept of network traffic reporting in Texas would have done it for me...

GARY DELAUNE (San Antonio, TX) Jim: I'm sure Bruce Hathaway will join me in supporting you for 2010. I will also conduct a campaign in the SA voting members. Gary D. (
www.garydnews.com)

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX)
Well, I saw the list of inductees. Not to be dismissive of any of the fine people, but I do not see anyone on there that deserves it MORE than you. I am really sorry to see such a low class of people running that "HOF". But trust me, when the roll is called up yonder, the ++++s will have a h+++ova lot more explaining to do than a good man like you. Jeff Cunningham, DC (
www.zoesplaceclinic.com) / (www.myspace.com/drjeffcunningham)

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, TX)
Wow, Jim...you've waited a looong time for this TRHoF honor, so hanging in there until next year shouldn't be much of a jump for a circus dawg like you, pal. <g> My best... Dan McCurdy

TRIVIA ANSWER: Jerry Lee Lewis' parents place a mortgage on their house so they can buy him his first piano.

JERRY MILLER [Mueller] (Houston-Kingwood, TX) San Antonio Radio 1957-1963. One of my favorite memories...a young grad from Jefferson High School, SA, came into my PD office (KONO) one day and stated he wanted to get started in radio. I sent him to KIBL in Beeville, where I first started...and a year later, he was competing with me on KTSA! Oh...his name is Bruce Hathaway! Jerry Miller (Mueller), Kingwood, Texas. Comments to:
