LENDERS TAKE OVER BORDER
In a filing with the FCC, a group of lenders takes control of Border Media which has its headquarters in Dallas, TX. BMP owns 22 radio stations in San Antonio, Austin, Laredo, Waco and the Rio Grande Valley. Most of the radio stations broadcast in Spanish except for News/Talk KTSA-550 and KJXK FM (Jack 102.7) in San Antonio. BMP Radio is the largest, privately owned, Hispanic-focused radio company in the United States. Scott Wallace is SVP/CTO. In the FCC filing, the lenders admit that the takeover is amicable and that BMP does not make loan payments in almost two years. Larry Patrick of Patrick Communications is the trustee for the Border Media Business Trust which retains 100% equity ownership of BMP's radio stations. Jeff Hinson BMP CEO hits the exit ramp on Friday, July 31, 2009.

ROBIN MARSHALL (NYC-Commack, NY) Subject: Radio memories and current happenings. Hi Jim! All my radio history is in the All Access 10 questions, archives under AC or Hot AC, can't remember which one. I'd love to stop and write it out for you, but I'm swamped today. I will tell you, that I'm second generation...my Dad was on the air for 50 years, 25 of them at KDKA as a talk show host! So you could call me a 'radio brat!' Robin Marshall, President, Marshall Arts Communications, Inc. (www.RobinMarshall.com) / (www.JayneFM.com)

ROD RODRIGUEZ (San Antonio, TX)
Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio Issue #689. Hi Jim. I've enjoyed your site for quite a while. I'm an old radio alum myself. Rick Marcellan hired me right out of college in the mid 70's at KKYX out on Bandera Road and I worked under the late, great Joe Simpson doing field reporting and weekend news. I learned a lot from him. I also worked along side such folks as Bill Rohde, Pat Tallman, Howard Edwards, B. Bailey Brown, Jerry King and a whole host of others just to name a very few. I'm sure your readers can think of other folks who graced the local country music airwaves in the 70's. The end of my radio career came after I was assigned to cover the courthouse and police beats. That's were I, just like my fellow ex-news colleague, Danny Rosen, caught the law bug. Although I've been practicing law in Texas for more than 25 years, I still have fond memories of my old SA radio news days. In response to your article, FREE SPEACH DIES IN AUSTIN, TX, I've got to take issue with the commentator who criticized the removal of air talent due to comments concerning "wetbacks". Jim, I don't think this is a free speech issue. The Constitution does not protect hate-speech. Clearly, when the free exchange of ideas degrades into a negative singling out a racial/ethnic group, the line has been crossed. Thanks for sharing the old radio memories. Rod Rodriguez, Attorney at Law

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Subject: Fairness Doctrine. Fairness? What is that anyway... When I was taking a course Work and Leisure. We had to do a report before class as an assignment, I hate getting up in front of people unless making music. So I discussed this with my Sociology Teacher and he let me do my report by performing songs about the subject. He gave me two grades others got one. He gave me an A for content the other a C for performance. I also liked the time I was listening to KRLD 1080 and the host was criticized by a caller for not going along with the other Conservative Talk Show Hosts. Anyway, he asked the caller why he believed he should since it was his show he paid for the time. Also I am attending a Presbyterian Church though my membership is elsewhere if I think they are wrong should I try to change their views when the wrong views are mine. I have to admit some of my professors I disliked the most were those I find have actually been the most beneficial to me and others. I hear people talking about Fairness and Justice when we probably really want Vindication and/or Mercy more often. Like other words that come to mind that have different connotations and denotations: faith, hope, trust. No matter what Laws are passed we know where the real power to protect and guide comes from. Charles George

MARTY AMBROSE (Houston, TX)
Hi Jim, Great issue, especially the news about Clear Channel bailing out of some stations. About 10 years ago Gary Hoffman and I had a chance to purchase 97.1 FM after Roger Gray left it. I intended to put Scott Arthur, Gary and Ronnie Renfrow back on the air and turn-key "Music of Your Life" the rest of the time. In other words, programming for the 55+ set. I had set up a group of investors, who, at the last minute, backed out at the prospect of paying $15 Mil. The station sold for 14.7 and became Classic Country. If CC would like to donate a frequency to the B.B.R.A. (Baby Boomer Radio Alliance) let me know and I'll find a way to fire it up. Best regards, Marty

TRIVIA ANSWER: The shortest record ever on the Top 40 chart is Duane Eddy's guitar instrumental Some Kind-A Earthquake (#37-1959) which is 1:17 long.
