ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

VETERAN NEWS ANCHOR DEPARTS
ABC News Radio reports that longtime correspondent/anchor Bob Walker dies at 77. Bob's voice is on ABC Information Network for three decades from the 1960s before he retires in the 1990s. Bob is News Director of WFAA TV ABC CH8 in Dallas, TX when the thirty-fifth President of the United States John F. Kennedy dies from a gunshot wound on November 22, 1963. A career milestone is when Walker performs live coverage, along with ABC’s Vic Ratner, of the space shuttle Challenger disaster on January 28, 1986. Bob's former colleague Steve Jones, ABC News Radio VP/GM, says Bob’s reporting represented his broad interest and sharp insight into events both important and interesting to people. He will be missed.

SPORTS ICON RETIRES

Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully says that he may hang up his microphone at the end of the 2010 season. Vin is in his 60th season as L.A. Dodgers sports announcer. Vin tells the Los Angeles Times that he plans to return for the 2010 season and then retire. The 81 year old Vin Scully proclaims: God willing; I will probably come back for one more year. At this moment, my health is excellent and I'm leaning toward one more year. Can it really be true that he is 81 years young? Scully's time with the L.A. Dodgers is just about the longest run of any broadcaster with one pro sports team.

WOMEN UP - MINORITIES DOWN

According to a new 2009 study, in both television and radio, women increase their share of jobs in newsrooms while minorities lose ground after a 2008 peak. RTNDA and Hofstra University's report states: Women now hold 41.4% of TV news positions and 28.1% of all radio slots and hold their own in the tally of news directors. However, minorities fell from 23.6% of total TV staff in 2008 to 21.8% and went from 11.8% to 8.9% in the radio department.

CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego, CA) Hey Jim, once again I apologize for not seeing you while in Houston. I tried all day but your phone was forever busy. Jim I'm so sorry you didn't make the DJ Hall of fame. But there were some others who didn't make it...many ole timers. I saw a lot of names on the nominating list I recognized who were in Texas radio long before its explosion in the mid fifties and sixties. So your absence leaves you in good company. On my trip back I ventured into OK for a couple of days and along that TX-OK border I was constantly changing the dial on the car's radio. Local radio is still alive in those rural areas...but the programming is struggling. The economy has hit rural radio really bad with very few national ads...one or two people handling the board, and an almost total absence of automation. Radio however struggles on. I actually heard the original recording of Pledging My Love by Johnny Ace. I had such a difficult struggle with nostalgia I almost ran my car off the road. The heat was a mild 105 most of the time and weather was always on the lips of the announcers. So we must keep on keeping on. CC

MARTY AMBROSE (Houston, TX) Subject: Hall of Fame. Well said, Jim, and thanks for the nice comment at the end. It's funny-not only is there no $ to be elected, but who's going to know? Thanks for sending me JRRR. Marty

GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Subject: Correction from Jerry Miller's email: 'from KTSA George Lester & Charlie Van both moved to Seattle at different stations, KTSA's Don French joined Chuck Blore's stations as PD in Minneapolis, and Gene Crockett went to WOAI. Ricci Ware and Bob Sinclair stayed put and did very well.' Hi Jim, I just wanted to let you know about a couple of things in the statement above. Charlie Van went to Seattle to program KOL and later hired me as AM drive DJ there. We never worked at different stations. Seattle management didn't understand modern, tight format radio so we both came back to San Antonio. Charlie went to KONO and I was welcomed back to my AM drive slot at KTSA. Bob Sinclair didn't remain at KTSA. He switched over to KBAT in about 1965 and we worked there together for a couple of years. Ricci didn't have an uninterrupted stint at KTSA either. He replaced me at KBUC in 1972 when I went to Houston. I thought you would like to know. Best wishes, George Lester

TRIVIA ANSWER: The Raspberries debut album in 1972 contains a raspberry scented scratch and sniff sticker.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX)
Subject: Joy drive-in theater in Dallas, TX in the 1950s. I remember a JOY drive-in theater in Mt. Sterling, KY going strong in 1954! I started in radio at $30 a wk in Elkins, WVA; the jock running the popular teen show, 1240 Club, got fired & I moved into the big-slot at $40 a wk...my first of many radio jobs. I'll have to mail you one of my famous membership cards to my 1240 club; they're packed, but when I finish my office I'll send you one! (This was 1953). I could write a book. I want to call it "The world's second oldest Teenager" in deference to Dick Clark, whom I have met many times, but that's another long story. I think he is only person left older than me...the others are all gone: John Wayne, Ronald Reagan, George Burns, etc. In HS I worked at Kroger (new store) as bag-boy too...60 cents hr. By Dec. 1950 I had made almost too much money for Dad to claim me on IRS, so he made me quit. In Jan, the store would not take me back, so I moved on to other jobs, as I took Distributive Education, where I went to school only in AMs & then to a job as part of schooling. I could write an entire chapter about my high school days alone...ha. Where else could you find all the pretty gals my age confined in the same building M-F & many in my classes too? I would have paid them to go to school. I never wanted HS to end! Gotta stop. I can ramble for days. Really did enjoy your remarks too. Keep 'em coming. Best to you, BOB

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Hi, I will do what as Oscar Wilde said to do with good advice... Actually I like the line by Oscar Wilde, "Every Saint has a past and every Sinner a future". Now what is the difference between plagiarism and research? Charles

SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL (1874-1965) You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life.
