GOSPEL LEGEND LEAVES US
A man that many call Mr. Country-Gospel, Bob Willis who is a preacher and musician, dies at 75 on Friday, July 10, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Louisville, KY. Bob begins to write Country songs when he is just 12 years old. In his career Willis writes or co-writes more than 1000 Country-Gospel songs. Bob pens many tunes that the late former Louisiana governor and Country star Jimmie Davis records. The Florida Boys, The Happy Goodman Family, Carl and Pearl Butler, Jody Miller and others record Willis' tunes. Even though he never lives in Tennessee in 1984 Gov. Lamar Alexander makes him an Honorary Citizen of Tennessee. Bob Willis preaches the Gospel in Folsomville, IN for 45 years.

SENATOR SAYS NO TO NEWSPAPER BAILOUT
Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) ponders the tough moments that newspapers face in times like these. The senator claims that he wants to help but he says that a newspaper bailout is wrong because it removes their independence and objectivity. Instead Sen. Cardin pushes a non-profit approach. He believes this lowers income but they also do not have to pay taxes. The senator explains that this is no loss to the US Treasury. He says that few newspapers now make enough money to owe any taxes anyway. We believe the good senator needs more time to ponder.

DAN ROSEN (Tokyo-Kamakura, Japan) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#694) August 03, 2009 [Monday] Hi Jim, Great to see Rod Rodriquez among your correspondents. I wonder if we are the only two members of the "ex-KKYX news guys bar association." Best, Dan Rosen

COYOTE CALHOUN (Louisville, KY) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#694) August 03, 2009 [Monday] Is this Jimmy Rabbitt out of Grand Junction the same Jimmy Rabbitt who worked at KLIF, KHJ, etc.?

JOANIE GREEN-GALLO (Tulsa, OK) Jim, What a great piece on Houston radio fan, Bobby Langham. He's just the nicest man around. The only thing I wanted to add is that his birthday is April 28th. I would usually send him a card as his big day would approach and he would be happy to get some return mail for all he sends out. Joanie Green Gallo

SAM LEE (Beverly Hills, CA) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#694) August 03, 2009 [Monday] Hi Jim. Good work on Rev. Ike. However, Washington Heights is in NYC. I know because I lived two blocks away from his church and a friend of mine was his music director. Stay Well. Sam Lee (

BREAKING NEWS!
Legendary Dallas, TX mobile news reporter Sam Pate dies at 77 at 10 am on Monday, August 3, 2009!

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake, TX)
Subject: SAM. We just got back to the lake. Sam passed around 10 am. After I have rested, I will write again. I would have let you known sooner, but my address book was here.

BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX) I don't know if you receive info from Mike Shannon or not so I'm passing this on to you. If you did receive it, pardon the duplication. Bud. From: Mike Shannon 'Subject: Sam Pate, DFW radio newsman, dead at 77. 'Just letting everyone know that Sam Pate passed away this afternoon (Monday 8/3) at a hospital in McKinney, TX. He was 77 and had been battling brain cancer for some time. Some of you got an email earlier today from me asking for remembrances of Sam, old airchecks, or anything that could be played or read at the funeral. If you have anything to share, please forward along to me and I'll make sure Sam's daughter Rosalyn gets it. Sam worked at KBOX, KLIF and KVIL in Dallas during his career. He was perhaps best known as the KBOX-AM reporter who reported the shooting of Pres Kennedy on 11/22/1963, with the oft-heard phrase from old recordings of the event, "It appears as though something has happened in the motorcade..." Others of you will remember Sam as the tall, older gentleman who attended our last couple of DFW Radio Lunch Bunch gatherings. He really cherished the time that all of the attendees spent with him, listening to his old stories and making him feel like a part of the group. I thank you all for that as well. Sam was one of a kind and we'll sure miss him. Services have not been announced or set yet.'

HAROLD GUNN (Houston, TX)
Hi Jim, Just got home from a trip and received your message. See you Thursday and drive carefully. HG

PAUL WILLIAMS (Houston, TX) Jim, Speaking of Bobby Langham, If I had a dollar for every request I played for him when I was on KNUZ (60-65?) on the night shift, I would be a millionaire!!!! He still calls about every other week to tell me who is working where. He never ceases to amaze me. When I worked at KODA I gave him and his mother a tour of the station. She has passed on and he now lives with his sister and her husband. What a fan of Houston Radio!! See you Thursday for lunch... Paul

CHUMBE SALINAS (Benavides, TX) Subject: Subscribe. Have several friends that are or were in the business (Paul Williams, Frank Haley, Don Armstrong, and the late Chet Hancock, to name a few)! Love the people in the industry! None like 'em! cs

TRIVIA ANSWER: B.B. King names his guitar Lucille after he nearly loses it in a fire that two men start in a fight over a woman by the name of Lucille.

ROBERT REYES (San Antonio, TX)
Howdy Jim! ...hope you are doing well and I hope you will allow me to us your forum to wish Don Couser a very Happy Birthday! I used to listen to Don and his feathered partner, George The Duck...a.k.a. "PATO MOJADO" (wet duck) on KONO in the early 1960's. My brother, Eddie, and I got to meet Don when he, along with Denny Ezba and The Goldens, appeared at a local men’s clothing store. The main highlight was George singing the theme song from the movie, High Noon, "Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling". You HAD to be there to enjoy it! In the early 1970s, Don was my professor at San Antonio College in the Radio/TV/Film Department. Hardly anyone ever flunked his class unless they were downright dumb or never showed up. Don's classes were always interesting and entertaining! In the early 1990's, when I began working for WOAI and Clear Channel, Don was an account executive so we saw each other often. Nowadays, thanks to Liz Patranella, some of San Antonio's former radio and TV personalities, news reporters, engineers and others gather twice a year for a friendly get together and luncheon. I am happy and proud to consider Don a friend and mentor and I am sure many of your readers will express their kindest wishes on his birthday! Thanks, Jim, and take care! Bobby Reyes (
