TYLER WELCOMES A NEW RADIO STATION
The Tyler-Longview, TX Arbitron radio market expands one more radio station when Dudley and Dorothy Waller add a fourth FM radio frequency to bring their cluster to 5. The Waller's other radio stations in the Tyler-Longview market include News-Talk KEBE-1400 & Top 40 KLJT FM (102.3) Jacksonville, TX; Top 40 KFRO FM (95.3) Gilmer, TX and Talk KDVE FM (103.1) Pittsburg, TX.

BOB MILLER (Detroit-Plymouth, MI) Hi Jim, Seems to me that it could be (Jeff Britt). I was a newsguy there (KBUC) for a short time. John Woody fired me for missing a story that KBER had and we didn't. Oh well, aside from being crushed I managed to get work at KEEZ-FM, owned by Chuck Balthrop. The format didn't suit me very well at that age and the new Schafer Automation that he had installed when we moved to the top of the Transit Tower didn't either. So, I moved on down to the Virgin Islands and worked there for 30 years. Not a bad consolation prize. But I digress... Jeff Britt aka Les Michaels was doing the morning show as I recall. He left to drive a bus saying it paid a lot more money. He must have left in a hurry because for a long time I had kept his 3rd Class ticket and his airchecks that were left behind. The tapes I still have and am unsure about his old FCC radio telephone license. Whatever happened to John Woody? I think he went a little hard on me but it was radio in the 1960's. I also had a gig at KONO-TV as weekend booth announcer and camera man for 12 Star Final with Tom Ellis. I wrote to him from the email on your website and he wrote back. Bob Sinclair was quite impressive as I recall when he was at KTSA. He recorded a song he wrote called "I'm gonna build myself a girl". It was pretty funny. At least I think it was Sinclair. RAY WHITWORTH (D/FW-Arlington, TX) HI Jim: Tell the daughter of Paul Allen English to check old copies of The San Antonio Express-News. Columnist Paul Thompson always talked about him and they had a feud of sorts back then. Paul wrote a nice column however after English's jeep accident in which he perished from my understanding. Ray
JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) My sister Evelyn and I would like to thank you to all who have been so nice during our grief (Sam Pate's death). I would like to correct the media on one tiny thing. Sam was born in Jan of 1933, which would make him 76. I played a tape, How Great Thou Art, in church Sunday morning with Sam singing. My pastor said I forgot to tell him my brother was a "pro". Jim, I need your home address so I can send a donation for the web in Sam's memory. He would have liked that.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Over my life, I've spent a lot of time in D.C. & I still hear from some DJs in that area (and a beautiful girl in suburban Laurel, MD) But that's a story for another time. I have no desire to return, but my only son lives in Leesburg, VA out near Dulles Airport. Robert Duvall lives there on a farm & Arthur Godfrey lived there with his own private runway for flights to NY. My book will be at least 500 pages. Want to help me write it? BOB
TRIVIA ANSWER: The announcer's opening line in TV's Dragnet series from 1951-59 is Ladies and gentlemen, the story you are about to see is true. The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, TX) Subject: KLBJ: Keep turning left for Austin - PC capital of liberal Amerikastan. Let's be clear, the inappropriateness of racial comments on broadcast outlets, or in public is apparent, and frankly, overflowing with sheer witlessness. Precedent set by boorish radio louts of the status of Don Imus, et al, and the reprimands of racist utterances should tell air personnel above a 60 IQ that they will reap similar if not more dire punishment. Particularly if the radio station carries the initials of the patriarch of 'PC' birth during the Great Society's nascent emergence. Couple that Matterhorn of evidence with left-of-left 'Keep Austin Weird' denizens of the Liberal Light of Texas, and the KLBJ perpetrators become the poster boys for the slogan, "You Can't Fix Stupid." But, to turn a phrase, this is a BIG BUT 'inapropriateness is NOT illegal.' Thus Spoke the First Amendment. Even Zarathustra was hip enough to dig that, cat. Personally, I'm a vigorous and vocal opponent of any politically correct mandate, requirement or expectation from any quarter, in that I see the ever-growing 'PC' movement as an effort to silence opinion and staunch free debate - a clear anathema to our constitutional First Amendment rights. 'Controlled speech' in any form is simply not within our American 'freedom' model, and as such, in whole cloth, is unacceptable. In the case of the KLBJ dullards, as Einstein opined, "Genius has its limits, but stupidity is not thus restrained." Dan McCurdy - KLIF-1190, KBOX-1480, Dallas; WMEX-1510, Boston; 2004 Texas Radio Hall of Fame inductee; freelance advertising/PR writer
