ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

TV CUTS BACK OR DO THEY?
The annual TV Guide report on what prime-time TV stars earn reveals quite a lot. In 2009 TV stations all across America not only cut back on the amount of TV news programs but long time TV news anchors leave the building. Not so on prime time TV shows where stars expect to earn at least a whopping $400,000 per episode. As an example, Simon Cowell adds to his bank account $50 million this year. According to TV Guide, newlywed actor Charlie Sheen is the highest-paid comedy star on primetime TV at $825,000 per episode. CSI's William Peterson who leaves the show next season is the highest-paid actor in a prime-time TV drama with earnings of $600,000 per episode. Mariska Hargitay star of Law & Order: SVU is the highest-paid actress in a drama at $400,000 an episode. But the U.S. President takes home $7,692 per week which is only about $400,000 each year. The average elementary school teacher makes $965 a week which is just over $50,000 each year.

WBZ FM RETURNS

As we report in the Monday August 17, 2009 issue of JRRR, CBS Radio launches the first FM Sports/Talk in Boston, MA as 98.5 The Sports Hub.  August 13th is its debut. This makes for a kind of a musical chairs game because Hot AC WBMX FM occupies that same spot on the dial but its staff and music move on up the wheel to 104.1 which is the home of legendary Boston Rock WBCN FM which ceases its terrestrial broadcast after 41-years in Beantown. After the flip, WBCN’s Rock music continues online and on HD Radio. WBCN's Toucher & Rich continue in morning drive on the new Sports Hub. The call letters WBZ FM are not new to Boston radio because those are the call letters of three wireless beams in Boston since 1943. They all are Westinghouse Broadcasting operations which become CBS Radio in the mid 1990s. The first WBZ FM is from 1943 to 1952 while the second is from 1956 to 1981 (which becomes WMJX) plus the new Sports Hub begins in August 2009 is the old WROR/WBMX FM. The new WBZ FM is the home of NBA's Boston Bruins and NFL's New England Patriots.

SUSAN SATHRE-GONGOS (Tampa Bay, FL) Subject: Tropical storm. Hi Jim, Claudette came and went and didn't conquer. Vegetation is a little worse for wear, but all and all just a bad rain storm. The system sat offshore for a while and came in about midnight. No power loss here. I did lose a few branches and plants and the remainder are seriously leaning northward, but all in all, it could have been far worse. I basically slept through it all. So not much to report. Panama City itself did have power losses, but I don't know yet what else happened around the area. Thank you so much for your concern and prayers. If Bill comes this way, I really will head for the hills. Hope this isn't just a practice run. Susan

JANET & ARCH YANCEY (Houston-Alvin, TX)
Subject: Janet Yancey sent you a message on Facebook...Sherwood Cryer. We got a phone call today that Sherwood Cryer (owner of Gilley's in Pasadena, TX) died Thursday August 13, 2009. He was in hospital in Pasadena, TX. He has been ill for a while.

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#700) August 17, 2009 [Monday] To Sara Chester, I say MYOB. That dog was part of the extended family and I thought a lot more of her than I do some of the posters on this list that I worked with. Until you get another DFF, I would keep the signature just as it is. I am one of only 2 or 3 people that read this list that actually met Tejas and I will tell you right now that Tejas was special in every way. I came close to keeping her myself! PAUL WILLIAMS (Houston, TX)
Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#699) August 14, 2009 [Friday] Jim, Just a short note to thank Derrill Holly for his kind words about me (and you) regarding The Texas Radio Hall of Fame. I have had many questions asking me how people are nominated and elected to the organization. I don’t really know the answer. I know so many people, including Derrill and you that deserve to be there. I was on the air 9 years (in Tyler and Houston) and in sales in Houston for 44 years and still selling for Univision Radio….that’s 53 years in Texas radio! What does it take to get in? I agree with Derrill. Could someone please explain the process to enter that great organization? Thanks, Jim….keep up the great work! Paul Williams

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) Oh my goodness. What a wonderful surprise! Sam's daughter Debra came over so very excited. She called up her dad's name on Google and was she surprised to find so many of Sam's friends have written about him. Debra called them up for me and I was so proud of all that was written. It has helped our grief greatly. To read the things all wrote about him showed me what wonderful guys are "radio’s" God bless all. Dick Glancey, you are the only "BIG BROTHER" I have now. Hang around for a while. (I will read your email Thursday during the service. It was beautiful)

ANDY WALDROP (Houston, TX) Boy...was Dan McCurdy "right on the money" with that one!!! If anybody EVER finds me conforming to "politically correct," please...just shoot me, and put me out of my misery. "Politically Correct" is one of the main reasons, if not THE main reason, why this country is headed straight for the crapper, like...as Merle Haggard would say, "a snowball headed for H***."

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) Subject: New Entry at Jim Rose Remembers Radio WOW...whatta wonderful, warm, sensitive initial comment from Sara Chester...a real positive first impression, huh?...kinda makes us Southern fellas sorta sad that we can't travel all the way up to Poughkeepsie, NY to give that 'creeped-out, nutty-weird' Yankee lady a nice introduction to Southern Hospitality. All of us who read your blogs regularly had a real warm place in our hearts for Tejas, if for no other reason than your Love for your fuzzy friend. Bestooya, Jimbo...Dan McCurdy Sherman, Texas

JOE FORD (Houston-Spring, TX) I have a couple of young clients who Twitter...drives me nuts. Someone is probably sending it over there, or the Twitter site considers it interesting...don't know for sure. To me, I stay away from social networking sites because it's a huge hassle to check the messages, keep updating, and staying in touch. I actually have things to do during the day and don't have time to get involved with IM's, texting, much less Twitter and Facebook. However, I DO know people who sit in front of their computer all day and take a great joy in the constant flow of bs coming and going.

TRIVIA ANSWER: The second most-visited house in America after the White House is Elvis Presley's former home, Graceland.

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) I was thinking of an announcer that I enjoyed listening to on KFJZ 1270, Mark Stevens. Is he still in the business? I can't remember who was programmed against him. I now have a Buzz Aldrin Grundig G6. The radio has limitations but most handhelds do so no surprise, but for the price is good when traveling and want access to shortwave and the AM/FM bands. Voice Of Greece has a very good signal at night on 9420. Also I have been practicing my Spanish by listening to Radio Exterior Espana on 6055, and Radio Nacional Brazil comes in the afternoons on 11780.

FEDERICO FELLINI (January 20, 1920- October 31, 1993) A different language is a different vision of life.
