60 MINUTES CREATER SUCCOMBS
The creative genius behind the trailblazing CBS News expose 60 Minutes, Don Hewitt, dies at 86 on August 18, 2009 from cancer. Don begins his news career in broadcasting as a producer and director for CBS News legends Edward R. Murrow, Douglas Edwards and Walter Cronkite. His long newscasting career spans some 60 years most of which with CBS. Hewitt plays a mammoth behind-the-scenes roll in the coverage of some of the biggest news stories in history. One is the first televised presidential debate between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy. But, it’s his role in the TV news magazine show 60 Minutes which he creates in 1968 that is his broadcast industry legacy. Don Hewitt describes the secret behind his success with the long running Sunday night TV program 60 Minutes Hewitt relates It’s four words every child knows: Tell me a story.

HE'S BACK!
Remember when Don Imus fires his long time sports announcer Sid Rosenberg on NYC’s WFAN-660 morning show? The I-Man is constantly at Sid's throat about his sports reports. Rosenberg is one of our favorites in the I-Man morning playhouse. Like all of us Rosenberg has his ups and downs but sometimes the Don is a tyrant. Good news. Sid is back on the air again on Beasley Sports/Talk WQAM-560 Miami, FL in the spot that legendary talk host Neil Rogers occupies but retires in June 2009. Beginning September 7, 2009 Sid hosts his own daily midday Sports talk show from 10am-2pm. He also hosts WQAM's Miami Dolphins post-game show. Rosenberg exclaims I’ve been a fan of WQAM for years, starting when I would visit South Florida as a young sports enthusiast. This is a tremendous opportunity to work with the best South Florida has to offer. JRRR congratulates Sid Rosenberg on his new sports show.

SARA CHESTER (Poughkeepsie, NY) I didn't mean to sound critical but It seems strange to me, Jim, that a grown man would need to have his dog's name as a signature next to his. I didn't realize you would have so many people who would write in your defense about your dog. Do any of them also sign their name with their dog's name next to theirs? Is your dog on your bank checking account's signature card? I have raised many pets, and lost many pets, but I don't feel the emotional need to sign my name with their names next to mine. What do you do as a career? Sara

VICKY PICKERING (John) (Houston, TX) Subject: Warning to old Rock'n'Rollers. You old Rock 'n' Rollers beware. John Pickering (of The Picks - Buddy Holly's backup singers and the voices of The Crickets) fell getting out of bed Monday morning 8-17-09 and hit his head above the left eyebrow and had to have 16 stitches to close up the gash. You guys may not be able to rock 'n' roll like you did in the 50's - or get out of bed! Vicky Pickering (www.buddyhollyandthepicks.com) / (www.myspace.com/thepicksbuddyholly)
JERRY MILLER [Mueller] (Houston, TX) Dear Jim...I'm with Paul Williams on this TX>H>O>F> stuff. I guess we're too OLD to be remembered by the young'uns today. We were the inventors, the pacesetters, founders, if you will, of Modern Personality Radio. We weren't 'card readers' like a lot of DJ's? today. The content on the air, was OURS, music AND voice, was OURS, not some consultant's! Like Paul, I've been around a while...DJ and PD at KONO in late '59 and early 60's when they had the highest ratings of any station anywhere! Also top-rated DJ at KLIF and KNUZ, the best Texas had to offer. After 17 years on the air, I went to KILT Sales for 28 years. During that time I also voiced over 1,000 radio and TV commercials, local regional and national too, including the Shell Answer Man in the 70's radio campaign, and the Chevy Like A Rock TV ads in the 90's. Rick Candea and Chet Maxwell have, in the past, submitted my resume' to HOF voters, but to no avail. I really don't get it, just like Paul Williams stated, but what the h***...my awards and Rewards have been...and are...quite sufficient! Working for and with Dickie Rosenfeld for 28 years was more than most could dream of! Very sincerely, Jerry Mueller (Miller)
JOE FORD (Houston-Spring, TX) Subject: WHAT REALLY HAPPENED. Jim, When you asked me the other day to write down my thoughts about the days when radio was actually fun, a flood of memories came back. One story in particular. Most of my time at the old KNUZ was always a hoot, especially when we jocks had the power to pick our own music. A record promo man by the name of Joe Galkin, would always get past the front desk and actually bring his new records into the control room while I was on the air. His favorite trick was placing a new song (never heard before) on one of the unused turntables, turning off the song that was playing, then potting up the new untested material to replace what was airing! This guy was nuts! But, we all liked him so much it didn't matter. Most of the time, Joe had really good stuff from well known artists and the songs would probably have made the Top 40 anyway. I have to laugh when I think about how this would short circuit today's sensitive, overcooked and carbon copy playlists. Not to mention the anger and rage from the program hierarchy who would never understand the entertainment value.
JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) You get a lot done when you have your mind set to it! I guess I'll have to opt out of a seat at the table...my mother-in-law passed away two weeks ago and Diana's up in Kansas to bury her, so I can't commit to anything until she's back. I do plan as of now to go to the ceremony, so even if I'm not sitting in with you guys, I'll stop by to visit. Yours Truly, John Hale, Mobile Magic Music (33.Music) "We're at the best parties!"
