ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

HOUSTON HAS FOUR SPORTS RADIO STATIONS
We here in the Bayou City love our sports teams, especially the NFL Houston Oilers but in 1996 its owner Bud Adams quickly whisks them away to Tennessee. The defiant Bud Adams puts the NFL Oilers nom de guerre under lock and key. This enrages us Oilers fans. Bud becomes the most hated man in our city. He keeps the Oilers moniker for the 1997-1998 NFL season in The Volunteer State but for 1998-1999 he renames the team the Titans. Nevertheless, in 2002 we have a brand new NFL team - the Houston Texans. On September 8, 2002 the Texans play their first game at Reliant Stadium which just happens to be against arch rivals the Dallas Cowboys. For 2009 the Houston Texans are now well on their way to a playoff season. Or at least we like to think so. We also have the NBA Houston Rockets plus other sports franchises. Houston is one of the most competitive sports radio markets in America. But why do we have four sports radio stations? While I'm a DJ on KILT FM in the 1990s in the old building over on Lovett Street, CBS Radio flips KILT-610 from Classic Country to Sports satellite broadcasts. As I walk down the hall the KILT-610 control room is empty of a live body. The lights are down low. Reminds me of a funeral without a casket. Soon to follow in 2004 is Clear Channel whom many in radio call The Evil Empire transforms Pop Standards the Best Music Ever KBME-790 (ex KULF, KKBQ) into Sports satellite programming. In January 2007 Cumulus tries to make a go of it with Sports on KFNC FM (97.5) but its signal lacks a solid punch. On August 20, 2007 GOW Communications buys KILE-1560 and switches it to Sports KGOW-1560 The Game. In the early evening of July 2008 I and some noted Houston radio people exit the Houston Radio Reunion at Tin Hall to pay a visit to the KGOW studios. Looks like a deserted ship. Everything is a dull gray in color, carpet needs replacing. Not a creature was stirring. Not even a mouse. Nothing but live satellite feed mumbo jumbo from far away places. In April 2009 most likely in response to lower than predictable Arbitron ratings KBME releases The Men's Room hosts Craig Roberts and Brad Davies. At the time this happens the newly created KGOW leads Houston Sports radio in mornings after KILT, KBME and then KFNC FM. Please tell me how long can this keep going on?

COX RADIO METAMORPHOSES

Just three months after Cox Radio goes private, parent Cox Enterprises blurs the lines between radio, TV and newspaper divisions into a single unit. Sandy Schwartz, head of the new Cox Media Group, professes one of the primary reasons to bring the units together is to unite their various sales forces. Bob Neil, Cox Radio CEO, emerges as EVP of the new Cox Media Group side by side with Doug Franklin former newspaper division chief. Bob has the final say on radio issues; however he and Franklin split the management role so some radio stations no longer report to Neil. Marc Morgan Cox Radio EVP/COO moves on up to SVP/Chief Revenue Officer for the entire Cox Media Group. Several Cox Radio RVPs melt into new cross-media positions to oversee not only radio but newspapers and TV stations as well. Numerous other executive changes go on throughout Cox Media Group. TV Radio Business Report has an observation: Cox makes none of the usual mention of changing to realize cost reductions from operational efficiencies. Rather, the company seems truly convinced that radio, television and newspaper will work better as one unit than as three separate units. JRRR reads between the lines. It all boils down to cost cuts.

JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) Subject: Robert Novak. I've been so busy that I haven't had the television on. My goodness, what a shocker to hear about Robert Novak! Guess we just assume that people like him who have been such a part of our lives will always be there. He did have a long, successful life...thoughts and prayers go out to those he left behind. JC

CHUMBE SALINAS (Benevides, TX)
To Sara Chester; If you didn't mean to sound critical but yet continue to do so seems to be YOUR emotional need, Sara, and that is what should seem strange to you! To me, you sound like an insensitive and cruel person, but that's just my opinion just as you have yours! On the other hand, Mr. Rose sounds to me like a sensitive, caring person who is held in high esteem and honor by all his colleagues. I'd be honored to call Mr. Rose a friend, but wouldn't even consider even wanting to meet you. Chumbe and BlackJack

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) What is it with this Sara Chester broad? Every time she opens her mouth, out comes another insult. Well, Sara Chester, none of us that know Jim think he is weird. When your only family that is close to you is your dog, you tend to live a little tighter to the 4 legger. I remember the saying "I wish I were the person that my dog THINKS I am." Please seek counseling and go back to practice riding your broom, Sara. Jeff Cunningham, DC (

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, TX)
Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio August 21, 2009 [Friday] #702 A bit of advice for Sara Chester of Poughkeepsie gleaned from my relatives during my formative years: "When you are in it up to your ears, keep your mouth shut." Dan McCurdy - Very temporary chairman of the Sara Chester Fan Club Sherman, Texas

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake, TX)
Subject: imagine. Betcha I can make you forget grieving over Tejas for a couple of minutes. Sit back, relax, and shut your eyes. Dream you are heading back from Dallas where you were visiting ole radio buddies. On the way home, you stop by here for dinner. As you step out of your brand spanking new red Mustang convertible you can smell the scent of a freshly killed chicken frying in the cool lake breeze. You sit down at the table to a home cooked  meal of fried chicken, gravy which had been made from the chicken drippings, large saucer size homemade biscuits, creamed potatoes, fried okra and Big Boy tomatoes, green onions, all from the garden. Black eyed peas. For dessert you have a choice of apple pie or sweet tater pie. You enjoy washing this down with freshly brewed tea poured over ice which is in an old quart sized fruit jar. After eating a couple of helpings you can decide whether to sit in the porch swing watching the birds or lying in the large sized rope hammock which is connected to two oak trees. Then, before leaving, how about some homemade ice cream of your favorite flavor. As you get back into your Mustang, you put the top down for the ride home to Houston. When you turn on the key, I thoughtfully hand you a brown paper bag which I have placed two pieces of cold chicken, a biscuit, a slice of pie and a little Tupperware container of clover honey I robbed from the bee house out in the far back yard reminding you it is for "a snack when you arrive back home. Did it work and make you forget a couple of minutes? If so, was it the food or the Mustang?

TRIVIA ANSWER: Simon and Garfunkel part company when Art refuses to record Paul's song Cuba Si, Nixon No for their 1969 Bridge Over Troubled Water LP.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX)
Just noted a couple of sayings you may wish to use in JRRR in future: (1) Governments views of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it, if it keeps moving, regulate it and if it stops moving, subsidize it...Ronald Reagan. (2) Government is the great fiction through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else...Frederic Bastlat. BOB

JAMES MADISON [4th U.S. President] (1751-1836) It will be of little avail to the people that the laws are made by men of their own choice if the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they cannot be understood.
