ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
LAST FLAMINGO DIES
Johnny Carter is the lead singer and founding member of Chicago, IL R&B vocal group The Flamingos from the 1950s-1960 (I Only Have Eyes For You #11-1959). He is the last living member of The Flamingos. Johnnie Carter passes away at 75 at 1:00 am on Friday, August 21, 2009 from lung cancer. In 1960, Carter replaces Johnny Funches as lead singer of Harvey, IL R&B vocal group The Dells. The Dells record the first version of Oh What a Night in 1950 which does well on the R&B chart. But in 1969 they go back to the recording studio. With Carter's fantastic falsetto voice as lead singer the tune hits Billboard's Top 10 (Oh What A Night #10-1969). In 1991, movie honcho Robert Townsend asks The Dells to be creative consultants for his musical film The Five Heartbeats which recalls the lives of The Dells. For the movie's soundtrack The Dells record A Heart Is a House for Love which leaps to #13 on the R&B singles chart. After The Isley Brothers, The Dells are the 2nd group to chart singles in 4 consecutive decades. R&B singer Billy Vera says in his Facebook page: Johnny had a beautiful falsetto voice that graced many wonderful records.

AN IDEA WHO'S TIME HAS COME
Are you fed up with activist website ColorofChange.org’s recent campaign that supports a boycott of advertisers on FOX News Channel’s Glenn Beck TV show? Mark Larsen Morning Magazine host on Genesis Communications News/Talk WWBA-680 Tampa-St. Petersburg-Largo, FL believes that it's time to turn the tables. He says If we mobilize a fraction of this country’s conversation-radio cume to respond, perhaps advertisers will get the message who really butters their bread. Mark's anti-boycott comes after activist website ColorofChange.org’s new campaign for an advertiser boycott of Beck’s FNC TV show. ColorofChange.org protests Beck's recent comments that suggest President Obama is racist by the way he handles the July 2009 arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates.

TOM ELLIS (Boston-East Sandwich-Newton, MA) Subject: Hurricane Bill. Hi Jim, Not only did we survive, we didn't even get brushed, at least not in E. Sandwich. Our beaches on Cape Cod Bay were swarming with swimmers today, and only gentle waves were washing ashore. I didn't check the beaches on the ocean side across the Cape, but haven’t heard of any angry water or wind. Minor rain showers overnight at my house and not even enough wind to create a whistle.
SARA CHESTER (Poughkeepsie, NY) Dan and Chumbe, How bizarre is it, if not downright creepy as I have suggested before, for a grown man to use a signature that includes his dog's name? You can call me insensitive and cruel, Dan McCurdy and Chumbe Salinas, but, I may be doing him a favor by letting Jim Rose know what others may be thinking but are afraid to bring to his attention because they are his "friends". How cruel and insensitive is it for Dan and Chumbe to keep adding fuel to the flame of Jim Rose's inability to get a life and quit acting like Timmy who surely by now has gotten over Lassie? What friend could ignore this sickness of the mind? I have 2 dogs and 3 cats. One of my cats was with me for nearly 10 years before she died. But, I don't sign my name as "Sara and Fluffy"! If Jim Rose can't get over his wacky need to use his dog's name in his signature line, I hope that some of his friends can suggest a clinic where he can seek grief counseling. Sara

CHUMBE SALINAS (Benevides, TX) I tried to keep my mouth shut but I just had to say something. I feel your grief (death of Tejas) and I think that anybody that can't empathize needs to get in touch with their soul...assuming they have one! A good eFriend lost his pet rabbit not long ago that he and his family had had for 9 years. He took it real hard! He sent me some pictures and his tribute and I put a slideshow together for him with his choice of music. I only hope it helped him heal a bit! You can read his tribute on the "more info" column. cs (www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQK8T_Vn8F0) Chumbe and BlackJack
PAUL WILLIAMS (Houston, TX) Chumbe/Jim, Way to sock it to Sara Chester (the Yankee from New York who seems to have problem with pets). I remember Black Jack, your cat very well...I notice you signed his name next to yours...good for you!!! I wonder what Sara’s career is? Maybe...Dog-Catcher!! Paul Williams, Senior Account Executive, Univision Radio
JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) Come on now folks, Give Sara Chester a break. Remember she said she had just come on Jim Rose (Remembers Radio) for the first time. She didn't understand how great Tejas was. We all have been there as Tejas grew from a pup and became a part of us. Tejas was family. To her and her "un-knowledge" Tejas was believe it or not, a dog. (kinda like her) To Sara, you have no idea how close we all are. One big family. How in God's name could I have done without these wonderful readers as the life was drained from my brother over the past few months. And they were there for me when his time came. No one complained as I poured out my heart to them. How about saying you were wrong and then get to know us. Show us your good side. I am wondering, do you have connections in any way with radio folks? They band together like glue. This is your chance to say you are wrong and all will be forgiven. If you choose not to take it, you have deep problems. My daddy always said "if you can't say something nice about someone, at least say "they can whistle well."
DAVID PERKINS (Fort Worth, TX) Hey Jimbo (and Tejas, in doggie heaven). What a summer. A 21 day drive through the old south to visit children and grandchildren in Maryland and Pennsylvania. Wow! Found and stood by the grave of my GGGG Grandpa, Samuel Perkins, died in 1783 in Crump, TN. It seems I've missed a "Sara and Tejas" brew-ha-ha. Sara in Poughkeepsie, NY, just north of NYC is NOT representative of the New Yorkers I got to know and love when I was morning man on THE sound of country WTHE in Queens. They were the warmest, most enthusiastic "fans" I had anyplace. Both of them! Sara, baby, I'm a former Marine and a former Western Union lineman before becoming a DJ and I can tell you, I cried like a baby 5 years ago when my little dog "Einstein" died. I don't know if you have a pet, a four footed friend, but if you did you'd know the love we two leggers invest in them. For a DJ (who is not "normal" anyway) wives and girlfriends come and go, but our pets, man, our pets are here to stay. Why don't you do like my Momma used to tell me, "David, if you got nothing good to say about someone, silence is the best sound out of yo' mouth, boy!" Jimbo, love ya, man. And Sara, believe it or not, I love you too. Love, David Perkins, Fort Worth (www.JesusChristSaid.com)
TRIVIA ANSWER: Summertime Blues is a US Top 40 hit in the 1950s by Eddie Cochran (#8), 1960s Blue Cheer (#14) and the 1970s The Who (#27).
BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Jim: I worked many shows w/Connie (Smith) between 1967-1974; Bill Anderson wrote her first hit "Once A Day," & claims to have "discovered" her in Columbus, OH but I recall her guesting on Tri-State Jamboree, WSAZ-TV, Huntington, WVA long before that time as she lived in Warner, OH & won a talent contest in Columbus on 8/4/63. That first chart record went to #1 during September 1964. We used to compare kids & family photos on her tour-bus. Her Opry debut was on 7/18/64 & her band was "Sundowners". She married singer/musician Marty Stuart 7/8/97 on Pine Ridge Indian Res. in South Dakota. She's charted about 40 records & half were top-ten hits. I was M/C of the Flatt & Scruggs show at Louisa, VA H.S. March 1973 & a young Marty Stuart was a musician in that group! Since you mentioned Connie to me today, I just had to relate the story. From The Southwest Outpost, BOB & Sonny Lee. (Yes, Sara, Sonny Lee is a real person...he is my loyal attack-cat!)
WALTER WINCHELL (April 7, 1897-Feb. 20, 1972) A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.
