ROCK ICON DRIFTS AWAY
Dobie Gray's song Drift Away is one of my all time favorites. Will never tire of that wonderful tune. Dobie Gray comes to life in a small farm town off I-10 just west of Houston. Brookshire, TX has a mighty fine bar-b-que eatery inside an old time grocery store that I love dearly. Poet, Punk Rock musician and author Jim Carroll drifts away from a heart attack at 59 at his home in New York. In 1978 Jim writes The Basketball Diaries that spins the tale of his life as a teenager who grows up in the middle of the NYC drug culture. In 1995 the movie of the same title stars Leonardo Di Caprio as Carroll. The film weaves the story of Jim Carroll's drug abuse in the 1960 plus his life in a NYC Catholic school. Some say that actor River Phoenix is more appropriate for the role. Also that same year Patti Smith encourages Jim to form the Jim Carroll Band. In 1980 the title of the band's debut album is Catholic Boy. People Who Died is the single from the album. In 1982 the movie E.T. uses Carroll's single in its soundtrack. During his career, Jim Carroll works with Rock legends Lou Reed, Boz Scaggs, Ray Manzarek, Pearl Jam, Rancid and Blue Oyster Cult. JRRR sends our sympathies to Jim Carroll's family and friends.

ROCK SINGER HAS OPEN HEART SURGERY
Former INXS lead singer and current Noiseworks songbird Jon Stevens undergoes open heart surgery in a Sydney, Australia hospital on Tuesday, September 15 2009. In December 2008 physicians insert two stents in the arteries of Stevens' heart. During a routine check-up on Friday doctors discover a blockage in one of his main heart arteries. In 1985, Jon forms Noiseworks in Sydney. Within 7 years they have three #1 albums plus several hit songs on the Australian Pop chart. In 1992, at their peak, the group breaks up. Stevens plays Judas in two Australian productions of Jesus Christ Superstar. In 2000, Jon becomes lead singer of Rock group the INXS. The band's one song they release with Stevens, I Get Up, fails to fire up fans. In 2003, Jon leaves the INXS with no album. In September 2007, Noiseworks reforms with tours. Jon reveals the possibility of a 4th Noiseworks album. In 1962, Jon Stevens is born in New Zealand. His brother Frankie is a judge on New Zealand Idol.

EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL
CHAD EVERSON (NYC, NY) Jim, I was flattered when you put my email in your newsletter. That was really great! I was wondering if I could pick your brain. You know the industry. Now with the ability soon rolling out in every car produced in America to get online radio in this coming year, who are going to be the winners and losers? Our
www.WGGRN.com is growing and we are thinking it is time to go 24/7 here in this next quarter. Where would you take 40 conservative talk show hosts from all across the country? Remember, the invitation is still open for you to get Grizzly with us as one of our great Grizzly Groundswell Radio hosts! Our hosts could really use your experience! Did you catch Attila The Honey Comedy Show last Saturday? That crazy wonderful group is really getting Grizzly! They had me laughing so hard, it was hard to breathe. Thanks again and let me know if you have some insight into where you think the radio industry is heading in this last hurrah of 2009! Chad T. Everson, Theodore Media LLC: three legged Grizzly Groundswell Stool! (www.GrizzlyGroundswell.com) / (www.WGGRN.com)JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) Jim, Did you really get a new Akita puppy?!? I sure hope so. Little girl? Named her yet? Can't believe you hadn't told us. How exciting!!! That should keep you young. Laughing here. My daughter says that Akitas are great for people who live in apartments because they aren't bad to bark. It's been a long, long time since I lived in an apartment. I remember my children having two dachshund puppies when I lived in an apartment in Irving back in my early radio days! My little 3 year old had been told he could name his anything he wanted so he decided he wanted the puppy named "Boat". My daughter, who was 8 by then, told him he couldn't name a dog "Boat", so the little guy cried. JC

DON LINCOLN (Austin-Lago Vista, TX) Hello again, Jim – My dad was a WW-II Navy vet and had retired in ’87 from the Lone Star Gas Co. in Dallas after 41 yrs. At the time of his death, he had been living with his lady friend in Hurst, near Ft. Worth. Over the years, he had been a regular at the Big ‘D’ Jamboree, Aragon & Longhorn ballrooms, Dewey Groom’s & Deb’s Dance Hall – probably some others I don’t know of or can’t recall, along Industrial Blvd. Obviously, he was a KPCN fan also, while they were on the air, as well as a C&W music lover &, unknown to me until yesterday, a record collector of many of the legendary performers. Thanks again & best regards – Don P.S. I received an e-mail delivery failure on Jay Weaver but did get a courtesy reply from Bill Crider.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Jim: By the by, while in car daily to/from work I've been listening to 'Country Legends' on KKYX, San Antonio. 680 AM! I know an FM here has that format, but I'll bet you know some history on the SAT operation. I'd be interested in your thoughts. BOB & Sonny Lee
KKYX-680 Country Legends in San Antonio, TX is Adult Contemporary KBAT-680 when I'm a DJ there from 1970-71. The 680 frequency in the Alamo City begins life in the 1930s as KABC-680 for the Alamo Broadcasting Company. The ABC radio affiliate on 790 in Los Angeles, CA buys the KABC call letters, hangs on tight and refuses let go of them. In San Antonio the new 680 moniker develops into KENS to coincide with its sister station KENS-TV. That partnership later dissolves. KENS flips to KBAT with an Adult Contemporary music format. Then, in the early 1970s, KBAT changes its format to Country and transforms into KKYZ where it remains today. The KBAT call letters no longer exist on the AM dial anymore but do pop up on FM in Monahans, TX as Cumulus 100,000 watt powerhouse The Basin's Real Rock - 99.9 KBAT FM (99.9). Before that it's Blazin Hip-Hop and R&B KBAT FM (93.3) Midland, TX. Nowadays that 93.3 FM frequency in Midland is Cumulus 100,000 watt Hip Hop KZBT FM. As I say many times it irks me tremendously when radio station call letters change. One reason is that it destroys a portion of radio history.
TRIVIA ANSWER: David Letterman mentions on the Late Show that his favorite song is The Spinners’ I'll Be Around (Whenever You Want Me). On July 27, 2006 The Spinners appear on the Late Show. They sing I'll Be Around with Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra.
