ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

PP&M LOSES A MEMBER
In September 1958 the Kingston Trio's folk tune Tom Dooley lands on Billboard's Pop chart and quickly rises to #1. Their record album does well, too. This begins a new music craze for folk music. Sing-alongs become a way of life. In 1962, folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary's If I Had a Hammer makes it to #10 the year that I graduate from high school. Puff the Magic Dragon and a new song writer on the scene Bob Dylan's Blowin' in the Wind both reach #2 for PP&M. But the PP&M song that we most remember is Leaving on a Jet Plane at #1 in 1969. PP&M is Peter Yarrow, Paul Stookey and Mary Travers. The folk trio has several tunes that land on Billboard. In 1971 PP&M disbands but reforms in 1978 to continue concerts into the 1990s. On Wednesday, September 16, 2009 Mary Travers dies of acute myelogenous a form of leukemia at 72 at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut. We remember the good old days with Mary's long blond hair that falls below her shoulders in a perpendicular 90° line and bangs that almost touch her eyes. In 2006, Peter, Paul and Mary induct into the Sammy Cahn Songwriters Hall of Fame. Mary Travers' survivors include her husband Ethan Robbins and two daughters Alicia and Erika.

PROSTATE DILEMMA REARS ITS UGLY HEAD AGAIN

After four days of agony and defeat unable to perform one of life's important functions, so on Friday morning, September 11, 2009 I relinquish martyrdom and make a mad dash to the Memorial Hermann hospital emergency room. The diagnosis is a prostate infection. The nurse jams a catheter deep inside my already pain-ridden area below the beltline. On Tuesday a urologist checks me out. On Thursday, his very cute and sweet nurse yanks out the catheter and replaces it with two tubes to measure the outward flow with no luck. So it's back to the catheter. The urologist says that he may have to open me up. Does his hidden message mean a roto-rooter procedure? On Friday the cardiologist gives me the high sign. So on Monday morning it's a return visit to the urologist to find out if I can perform like Niagara Falls. Prayer is the key. So please pray that Monday's examination proves to be a success.

CHUMBE SALINAS
(Benavides, TX) I'm so sorry to hear about your health problems, Jim! I just retired myself at 62 and I know about what you mean having to watch every penny 'cause extra expenses are a nightmare! I'm still too young for Medicare so I'm not even insured and pray to God that my health holds up. If it doesn't, they WILL have to just let me die! My prayers are with you, Jim! Keep the faith! Chumbe

BLAKE LINDSAY (D/FW-Addison, TX) Hi Jim: I appreciate you keeping us up to date. I'm as sorry as I can be, on what you are going through. I certainly consider you a good friend Jim. Jennifer and I will pray for your quickest recovery. If you need to take some time off your column, I know we would all understand completely. Keep us up to date, on everything Jim. Your Friend, Blake (

FR. BOB TOMLINSON (Ft. Worth-Hurst, TX)
Jim as a person who has had prostrate issues for longer than I can remember I (bad humor coming)...feel your pain! I'm stunned they would give you nothing for the discomfort. I'd seek another doctor and not one with a family connection like this one you have been going to has. I wish you would set up a PayPal account. It would be easy to shoot you some money. You're in my prayers my friend. Bob Tomlinson

CHET MAXWELL (San Antonio, TX) I'm sorry that you are having such a tough time, Jim. Hang in there, all things pass.

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, TX) Jim, I know it's really, really rough for you, buddy...but, you've GOT to get some pain relief...create a stink, stomp your feet, threaten them with a suit for malpractice...ANYTHING...relieving the pain will at least bring you to your senses and keep you from saying what you said at the end of your note. I won't even repeat it, since you have sooo many people who care for you and certainly count on your unique public service to the broadcasting industry. GET THE SURGERY...certainly that will remove the pressure being placed on your urethra and allow you to empty your bladder. Have they given you antibiotics for the infection? If not, raise a stink about THAT! I'm praying for you, Jim...go kick some butt at the hospital and get some pain relief and then something, maybe surgery, for prostate pressure reduction on your urethra. Your buddy...Dan McCurdy

RAY WHITWORTH (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Hang in there amigo. You are in my thoughts and prayers, Ray

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Jim: I feel your pain & am so sorry for all these health problems you experience past wk or so. Did you ever call Secure Horizons @ # I sent you for all-free info?? You see, any Dr visit is only a $10 co-pay under their plan; also, they pay the other 20% that Medicare (80%) doesn't, so for me there is no such fees in ER or labs. Specialist referral visits are either $20 or $30, not $75, etc. (Maybe $35, as I can't recall). Barb & I will continue to have you in our thoughts & prayers. We do not leave town until THUR A.M. 24th...back on duty Oct.5. Hope my ideas will help you & you get the medical help you need & deserve. We need you for a long time to come. Best from all 3 of us at The Southwest Outpost, BOB, BARB & SONNY LEE

DON TIFFIN (Dallas-The Colony, TX) Jim, Sorry to hear you are having such a rough time with all that. I would tell them you just can't pay the co-pay and bill you...$5 a month...and pay what you can. Still on the prayer list here Jim. Don

TRIVIA ANSWER: Fats Domino's Blueberry Hill is #1 for Big Band leader Glen Miller in 1940.

MIKE HARTMAN (Ft. Worth-Joshua, TX) Jim, I've had an enlarged prostate and prostatitis (hope I spelled that right). And I've had some scary moments with some high PSA results. Thank the Good Lord that the scariest moment, resulting in a painful biopsy, came out negative. But, I've never encountered what you are describing. Please...please...don't give up. Jim, even though a financial problem is there, I would certainly consider a second opinion. And, Jim....I will not end this letter without strongly urging you to leave it in the hands of Jesus. Healings come in many forms directly from the Good Lord...or him leading you to the right doctor. Jim...give it to Jesus and pray that he will guide you in this. In the book of Hebrews from the New Testament it's written, "...Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever". That tells me He still heals. Now, Jim, I've been around long enough to know that people live...and people die. But, when you have Jesus in your heart, no matter what you're going through...no matter what...He will be there. He won't forsake you, nor leave you. That's a promise. Take care of yourself and again ...give it all to Jesus! Do not give up!

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) I will be praying for you to get well. I keep hearing about health problems from friends and family. I think you have helped others so they can help you.

WALTER MATTHAU (October 1, 1920-July 1, 2000) My doctor gave me six months to live, but when I couldn't pay the bill he gave me six months more.
