ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

BOMB INJURES NEWS REPORTER
On assignment in Logar Province, Afghanistan while she travels with United States soldiers, CBS correspondent Cami McCormick suffers injuries after an IED explosion strikes an Army transporter which kills an American infantryman in the same vehicle. To stabilize her condition, Cami undergoes surgery at a field hospital. Then she goes to Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan for additional care. McCormick joins CBS News in September, 1998. She wins numerous awards. Cami is not just a run of the mill reporter. She is at Ground Zero on September 11, 2001 in New Orleans, LA when Hurricane Katrina wipes out its levees. McCormick does the grand tour of Iraq many times since the U.S. invasion. She is in Ramallah at the funeral for Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Cami reports from Nablus and Bethlehem during the Israeli aggressions of 2001. She also broadcasts about the disturbances in Gaza and Beirut. Before she joins CBS, McCormick travails for CNN, CNN International, Headline News and CNN Radio. She describes the death of Princess Diana from London plus the deployment of U.S. troops to Bosnia. Cami develops, anchors and produces CNN Radio’s first international newscast, The CNN Radio World News Report that wins the Edward R. Murrow award for Best Network Newscast in 1998. Her other tributes include two AWRT Gracie Allen Awards for stories about the destruction of the Twin Towers on September 11th and her Iraq war coverage, two Associated Press Awards, a CableAce Award for summaries on the re-election of Boris Yeltsin as Russian President also a Sigma Chi Award for her coverage of Hurricane Katrina and its after-effects.

TV SWITCHES CHANNELS
The FCC makes deals to try to resolve new problems that they create with lost viewership after the switch to digital TV. CBS tells the FCC that KTVT TV loses 57% of its over-the-air audience after the switch to digital plus when viewers rescan their converter boxes it does not reclaim many of those viewers. KTVT TV and the owners of KTXA TV in Ft. Worth-Dallas, TX file with the FCC for a double channel flip. The approval for the move of CBS KTVT TV [ex KFJZ TV] from CH11 to CH19 comes on Friday, September 11, 2009. The FCC says the move is in the public interest. The government makes it effective immediately with a publication in the Federal Register. The governmental proclamation also requires KTXA TV to move from its CH19 position to CH29. The FCC has two to three dozen stations that have major issues with signal loss after the transition to digital TV. This is all due to the big switch to digital TV on June 12, 2009. And the feds want to take total control of America's health care.

Jim, sorry to hear of your medical challenges. It's hard to keep a positive perspective while in a hospital. I value your radio news and insight and know you have fought this battle before. You have the strength to hang onto your faith. Let your friends encourage you and let God do the rest.

TRIVIA ANSWER: The backing vocals on Paul Simon’s Slip Slidin’ Away are by The Oak Ridge Boys.

RAY WHITWORTH
(D/FW-Arlington, TX) Jim: Just keep the positive thoughts going and all will be fine. I know, after 36 years, being a single parent, 3 failed marriages and some past health issues I finally accomplish something started 36 years ago, I graduated from College!! I have a BA in Sociology with emphasis in Education. My Goal is to teach the learning disabled how to communicate using my past 36 years of skill in radio. I taught an autistic child how to form words a few years ago and suddenly the light bulb went off in his head, he knew how to speak. His grandmother (my ex wife) was a special ed teacher and we worked together. Long story short in a year we finally got him into a regular classroom and in 2 years he made the honor role. He has Asperger's. This inspired me to us my skills to give back to the community like radio use to do. I now work at a high school in Arlington, Texas with learning disabled students, plus I teach the regular kids how to do morning announcements like a newscast. This is a great and rewarding job. Finally I kept a promise to my late "adopted" Dad that I finish and I did. Next month I am going to Ft. Sam Cemetery and place a copy of my diploma on his grave site. Ray

ALBERT EINSTEIN (1879-1955) You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.
