JAZZ SINGER DIES
Classic jazz vocalist Chris Connor, who sings with the Claude Thornhill and Stan Kenton orchestras plus records dozens of successful albums and singles, dies of cancer at 81 on August 29, 2009 in Toms River, NJ. Chris records hit songs like All About Ronnie with Stan Kenton's orchestra. Several of Connor's albums, The George Gershwin Almanac of Song, Witchcraft and Lullabys of Birdland are now on CDs. Born Mary Loutsenhizer in Kansas City, MO she croons with a large band at the University of Missouri. In 1949, she then moves to NYC. Connor vocalizes with Claude Thornhill, Herbie Fields and performs with Thornhill's vocal group the Snowflakes. After her time with the Stan Kenton orchestra in 1952, she goes solo in 1953 and signs with Bethlehem Records. She moves over to Atlantic with two singles that hit the chart in the late 1950s: I Miss You So and Trust in Me. Chris switches to ABC-Paramount and receives praises for her 1966 appearance at the Austin Jazz Festival. She makes a comeback in the mid-70s in record albums with Stan Kenton and Maynard Ferguson. She continues to record with record labels Progressive, Contemporary, High Note and Enja. She tours throughout the world, including Carnegie Hall in the Big Apple, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and concerts in Japan. Chris' last appearance is at the Iridium jazz club in NYC in 2004 that she shares with Anita O'Day.

MEXICAN MADONNA CLOSES SHOW
On Saturday, September 26, 2009 Mexican superstar Gloria Trevi closes SeaWorld's Viva La Musica Latin music series in San Antonio, TX. Reviewers at www.mySanAntonio.com/ say Not only does she celebrate la musica; she lives it in a wild life that plays out like a telenovela. The often-controversial, sometimes scandalous singer known as the Mexican Madonna is promoting her album, 'Una Rosa Blu'.

JOYCE [J.C.] WEBSTER (Mena, AR) Jim, Pain is something I do understand. Praying you get better soon. As my friend Jane who has been through so much with the cancer and heart problems always says, "This too shall pass". She's right, of course. Everything does pass...one way or another. Sometimes it is hard to have a good attitude when one is suffering, but it's the attitude that gets most people through cancer...so I think it must play a big part in all our health, don't you? Prayer certainly can direct us in the way we should go, so...people praying with you is a very good thing. Best always, JC
GLOOM, DESPAIR & AGONY are not just words on TV's Hee Haw. We prostate sufferers have to contend with this on a daily basis. Last Thursday the urologist says that he may have to open me up. During Monday's appointment he schedules an operation for October 12, 2009. The good doctor prescribes four medications to take on the day before plus Tylenol #3 for after whatever he does to me on October 12th. But probably can use some Tylenol #10.

RAY WHITWORTH (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Hi Jim: On KBAT San Antonio. They were top 40- 1965-1967 (switch to adult contemporary) The call letters were perfect when "Batman" hit the Airwaves on TV in Jan. 1966 (Replacing long running "Ozzie and Harriet"). The "Bat Logo" was everywhere and the "KBATMEN" made a lot of local appearances. including my local Junior High school. Don Perkins and Don Clark were announcers then that I can remember. later amigo, Ray
BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Thanks for the link, Jim. I'll look into it. I continue with Audience Bakery, doing newscasts for their formats and client stations, and am hoping to do some more voice work for VNR Communications. In other news, #2 son Patrick has been named a National Merit Scholar semi-finalist. We're making a trip down to Austin to look at the U-T campus and bring his older brother Joseph back for the weekend. I was pleased to see that Gary P. Nunn has joined the JRRR group. He's a great guy and a wonderful musician and song-writer. I used to get his Bunkhouse e-mail. Seeing his name reminds me to re-up. I also saw where Ken Dowe is retiring from Service Broadcasting. (KKDA AM&FM, plus 105.7 FM) Few of us get to retire by choice! I believe he has earned it, many times over. bc
