COUNTRY SINGER BREATHES HER LAST BREATH
Many consider Kitty Wells the Queen of Country Music. The daughter of Country legends Kitty Wells and husband Johnny Wright passes away on Sunday, September 27, 2009. Ruby Wright experiences heart problems and dies at 69 in her Madison, TN apartment. Ironically, Ruby recently appears at her mother Kitty’s 90th birthday celebration at the Ernest Tubb Record Shops’ Texas Troubadour Theater. Probably the most memorable hit for Ruby is her answer song to Roger Miller's Dang Me. Her Dern Me rises to #13 on Billboard's Country chart in fall 1964. Ruby's dad Johnny Wright's timely tune Hello Vietnam is a #1 song in 1965. In the late 1950s Ruby records as Ruby Wells in the trio Nita, Rita and Ruby. The 'Nita' of that group is Anita Carter who is the youngest daughter of Country music icon Mother Maybelle Carter of the Carter Family singing group. Of course, Anita's sister is June Carter who marries Johnny Cash. Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield, TN handles Ruby Wright's funeral arrangements.

JONATHAN FRICKE (Nashville, TN) Tom was a great, personal friend. Always wanted to help anyone he could. 'The Founder Of CRS Dies In Florida - Tom Entee CRS President For A Decade - AllAboutCountry is sad to pass along that the founder and creator of the Country Radio Seminar, Tom McEntee has passed away. He died in Florida last Thursday (9/24). Tom was not only the Founder and Creator of CRS, but served as Executive Chairman/President of CRS for its first decade. He was also a publicity innovator, a bio writer, (writing bio’s for some of the largest stars in country and pop music) an artist manager, a songwriter, created and operated a radio tip-sheet called Country Music Survey, a country chart editor of Cashbox Magazine two different times, National Promotion Director of GRT Records and Ovation Records and a Promotion Executive at several major and Indy labels. He was instrumental in the careers of Jimmy Buffet (Tom’s quoted in Buffet’s book), Alabama, The Amazing Rhythm Aces, Eddie Rabbit, Earl Thomas Conley, Jimmy Dean, The Kendalls, Hank Williams, Jr, Ronnie McDowell, Susan Marshall and Lefty Frizzell. He wrote the liner notes on Lefty’s last album. Tom was the very first record company executive to hear Alabama’s debut recording. After one listen, he said they would be enormous stars. He was right like that, a lot! He helped them--and many deserving artists--get their first record deals. He moved from working in the music industry in New York City to Nashville in 1969, after serving as a sergeant in the U.S. Special Forces in Vietnam.'
JOANIE GREEN-GALLO (Tulsa, OK) Jim, Just saw Mike Marshall's note about joining Houston's Taping for the Blind and wanted to congratulate him for volunteering at such a fine organization. I volunteered there every week for over 17 years and know that he will find the great people there a joy know. The only reason I am no longer volunteering there is that I have moved from Houston to Tulsa. Thanks for your service, Mike...and enjoy the wonderful company that make up Houston Taping for the Blind! Joanie Green Gallo

MIKE MARSHALL (Houston, TX) Jim, You might be interested to see this. I got it a couple of days after I arrived in Rome. What a blast from the past! I just noticed on reading my reply that I told him I was there from March '69 to September '69. I meant March '67. Mike
GIL THOMAS (Dallas, TX) Subject: Listener from long ago. To: Mike Marshall. Hello Mike, I saw your name on one of the radio discussion boards on the web, so I thought I would send you an e-mail. When I was in high school, I used to listen to you on WFAA radio. After listening for all those hours, I became interested in broadcasting myself and decided to take some courses in college. Well, I ended up working in television here at WFAA-TV myself. This is my 28th year at WFAA! Though it may have been a long time ago, thanks for the good shows and helping a kid find an interesting career. Ben Pate
BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Jim: Sent this one out from here in the "Valley-of-the-Sun." (I actually miss this warm, sunny weather daily...sunshine 350 days annually & if not, people would march on city hall!) We are enjoying our vacation & using laptop on this reply. All is well on the western-front & hoping you are better to enjoy this weekend too. BOB & BARB

TRIVIA ANSWER: Iwao Takamoto the animator who creates cartoon dog Scooby-Doo says that he gets the inspiration to name his character from Frank Sinatra's closing scat on Strangers In The Night which goes Dooby-dooby-doo...
GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Jim, I swear this really happened. When I worked for KTSA I would nearly always head straight for the golf course and get in 18 holes before going home. I guess it was about 1963 or so and I was playing at Brackenridge Park. On a par four I had hit my second shot to about eight feet from the pin. As I was lining up to sink what would be my first birdie putt in a long time I heard an awful racket. I looked up to see a car bouncing out of control across an open field. The car started spinning around in circles faster and faster until it finally stalled. As I stood there gasping I noticed that the grass under the car had caught fire oil was pouring from under the engine and feeding the flames. There was no one else in sight so I dropped my putter, waded across a drainage ditch with water up to my neck and sprinted the hundred yards or so to the car. The obviously drunk driver was just sitting there staring blankly ahead. I swung the door open and tried to pull him out but he had a death grip on the steering wheel. I had to literally beat his hands loose to get him out. Just as I led him to a safe distance the car burst into flames. Later the fire department arrived and I let them take over. I went back and finished the last couple of holes of golf and then phoned the story into the KTSA newsman on duty. Evidently he didn't deem it important enough and the story never got on the air. By the way, I missed that birdie putt. Darn it!
