HOLLYWOOD ACTOR GOES TO HOSPITAL
One of the co-stars of the 1969 movie Easy Rider, Dennis Hopper, goes to a hospital in NYC after he develops flulike symptoms. Sheila Feren, Dennis' publicist, says that the 73-year-old actor complains of flulike stomach ailments and enters an unidentified NYC hospital on Wednesday afternoon, September 30, 2009. Entertainment Tonight reports that Hopper wears an oxygen mask with numerous tubes visible at the time of his hospital admission. We remember the legendary Oscar nominee in major films Hoosiers, Speed and one of my all time favorites Apocalypse Now. Dennis currently stars on the new Starz cable TV series Crash. He is in Gotham City to promote Crash but has to cancel all interviews and TV appearances. JRRR prays for Dennis Hopper's speedy recovery.

TOM ELLIS (Boston-East Sandwich-Newton, MA) Hi, Jim, I was saddened to hear about the passing of Kitty Wells and Johnny Wright's daughter. Your posting of that news brought back some memories of my teen years during the 1940's while living in Carthage, Texas, which is about 40 miles west of Shreveport, La. Miss Kitty Wells was one of the featured stars of the "Louisiana Hayride" which played each Saturday night on the stage of the Municipal Auditorium in Shreveport. Johnny Wright was one-half of the Johnny and Jack duo who also appeared on the Hayride. Hank Williams, Sr. was a Hayride regular during those years. There were many more somewhat less recognized performers there each week, and boy howdy they could really put on a good show. I was just a kid in high school then, but it was a regular treat to get together with a carload of pals and drive to Shreveport on Saturday nights to see "The Louisiana Hayride". That area was a hotbed for country music. My hometown, Carthage, also was the hometown of Tex Ritter and Gentleman Jim Reeves, and there's a Texas Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum that's open to visitors there in Carthage now. Thanks for the memories, Jim. Tom Ellis
JERRY SEABOLT (Nashville, TN) I was saddened to hear of Tom's (Entee) passing as we shared many good times back in our "youth" in the late 60's and the 70's in Music City. It also included being room mates during one of his "cheap lance" periods (Tom said he couldn't afford to freelance). When Tom had work he could always be counted on to help those who had only to hint at needing help. If that meant taking in out of work DJ's who needed a couch than his one bedroom was always available (even if he might come home to find one of them scuba diving in the apartment pool). Another one of the people who made life interesting and helped mold the "biz" without ever really getting the credit they deserved has passed from scene. Rest my friend

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, TX) Jim...just a word to broadcasters and ex-radio heads in reference to Mike Marshall's and Joanie Green's praise for 'Taping for the Blind', once I got out of radio and into advertising/PR, I volunteered at the Dallas Taping for the Blind on Wolfe Street near the Stoneleigh Hotel and recorded several audio books still available through the Library of Congress; but honestly, the most fun I had was when I switched over to another service DTFB had to offer, and that was reading the Sunday Dallas Morning News to the blind community. We narrated editorials, op-eds, columnists, hard news and the Sunday 'funnies,' as we used to call them. It was a blast and an, um, ethical way to get out of years of boring Sunday sermons <g>...my wife at the time, I'm sure, saw through my fun but virtuous ruse, but had no negative comment. Just a word to folks who have used their voices to feed their babies, 'taping for the blind' is a very real, positive contribution to a wonderful, appreciative segment of our society...and the feedback from the visually impaired folks is voluminous and very satisfying. MIKE MARSHALL (Houston, TX) Subject: Listener from long ago. To: Gil Thomas. Ben, what a nice surprise. I worked at WFAA 570/820 (What a trip THAT was) from about March of 1967 until September '69 when I was offered a better job in Houston. I have been there since. My wife is from Italy and I am presently in Rome visiting my daughter who is married to a Roman and her first baby, a girl a month ago. Thanks for the nice words. Since you work there, you will appreciate this. Several years ago after I had left the station for maybe ten years, I stopped by one day when we were in Dallas and told the receptionist at the front door that I used to work there and asked if I could look around. The answer was "No". I said there were probably several people I knew who were still there, could I speak with one. No. So I left. Think radio was still in the building then. Maybe you can give me a tour the next time I'm in Dallas. Mike Marshall
GIL THOMAS (Dallas, TX) To: Mike Marshall. Subject: Listener from long ago. You have an open invitation to come by. I would love to give you a tour. They keep us running in circles as you may guess, so please let me know ahead of time so I am available. Since you are in Houston, you probably know that Belo owns KHOU now. Belo back in 1986 decided to get out of the radio business so they sold the radio stations. Some of the radio studio walls are still where they were. Some of the studios are used for video editing. I think the building has been remodeled twice since you were here. Remembering back...I think you were probably one of the best examples of radio "info-tainment", where some of your show content was driven by current events. Of course now everyone is doing it. One of my friends back when I was in college went to Baylor. He once told me that they would listen to your show for broadcasting classes and discuss what things you would do. So you may not have known it, but you had a following. By the way, I tried to get a tour of this place when I was in high school and was told, NO! But hey, that was 40 years ago, we can do things differently now. Thanks for responding, Ben Pate
TRIVIA ANSWER: John Lennon's inspiration for the line I read the news today, oh boy, four thousand holes in Blackburn Lancashire in The Beatles' song A Day In The Life comes after he reads a newspaper article about a plan to fill 4,000 potholes in the roads of the Northwestern English town of Blackburn.
RAY WHITWORTH (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Hi Jim: On the "Scooby Doo" name inspiration, the articles I read stated that Fred Silverman (who later Programmed CBS, ABC and NBC) was in charge of children's Programming at CBS in 1967. He heard Frank's 'Stranger in the Night" and claims he suggested the character's name to the folks at Hanna-Barbara. It falls into the category of" who really knows?" Ray
