NABJ KEEPS AN EYE ON IMUS
The new cable TV simulcast of Don Imus' WABC-770 NYC Citadel morning show on Fox Business Network begins its broadcast on Monday, October 5, 2009. Reports indicate that the I-Man brings a huge ratings boost to FBN with about 177,000 total viewers in the 6-9 am ET slot, which is up from a previous all-day average of only 21,000. But the group that the leads the charge that calls for CBS Radio to fire Imus' after his alleged racially charged comments about the Rutgers Women’s basketball team the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) says that it plans to monitor Don Imus' content and guests on his new show. Enter Dolly Parton with her Christmas 1977 tune. Here You Come Again. Bob Butler, NABJ VP of Broadcasting, says that he is disappointed in the lineup of guests on last Monday’s first Imus in the Morning show on FBN. Don's guests include controversial African-American author Debra Dickerson and FOX News Channel personality and Premiere Radio Networks host Glenn Beck. I am disappointed that Don Imus did not seek to make his first show on the FOX Business Channel fair and balanced. Eric Deggans, past chairman of NABJ’s Media Monitoring Committee, also has harsh words about Imus, Diversity is clearly not a part of the new Imus image. Despite Imus’ much-ballyhooed addition of two black performers to his crew in December of 2007, the all-male team on the air this morning was middle-aged and white.

JERRY SEABOLT (Nashville, TN) Jim, you can add me to the lengthy number of those who were touched by Shelby (Singleton). I was the National Promotion Director for Smash Records in Chicago when Shelby (through Norro Wilson) found that I wanted to live in Nashville. I drove down on a Saturday and we swapped Mercury stories for an hour or so and he asked me what time I could start on Monday. It was the way he made decisions about people. If it felt right, do it. Four days later I was driving a new Cadillac with those three S's on the door and getting to work with an icon (and wishing in my later years that I had appreciated his expertise more). Another legend becomes immortal in our hearts.

JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR)
Jim, I gather something is supposed to happen on the 12th regarding your on-going problem. Prayers will be with you. Just do whatever is BEST for you!!! Sounds as though some of your friends and readers have given you some really good advice. IF we don't have our health...we have nothing, especially when it really limits us. God bless you. Oh, very sorry to hear about Mr. Singleton. He sure wasn't a complainer, bless his heart! I never realized how much he had done. Amazing. Hope YOU have a relaxing weekend. IF the rain would EVER let up and the sun would shine, I would be a happy camper. Hoping to be able to go to Bentonville this weekend with a friend so I can visit with my son and his wife and my three grandchildren. Don't know if that will happen...still, I can hope. Take care of you!!!! JC

MONDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2009 is the day that the urologist opens me up as he mentions at our last appointment. The procedure that he uses is Cooled TUMT (transurethral microwave thermotherapy) on my Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) which is an enlarged prostate. Will still have to keep the catheter and bag in place for at least another week. By then I should flow like Niagara Falls.

Ron's survivors include his beloved wife of 34 years, Sheryl Houston, three adult children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A memorial service is Friday, October 16, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the Blanco United Methodist Church in Blanco, TX.

LIZ PATRANELLA (Austin, TX)
Subject: Ron Houston. Though some of you have already heard, I felt I should send this message to our group to let you all know this sad news. Ron Houston passed away Wednesday. The message I received from Woody Roberts was forwarded from Sam Kendrick as follows: Ron Houston died this morning of a heart attack. I loved the guy so much, and my heart is breaking right now. I thought you should know. I just got off the phone with his wife Cheryl. She is by herself up in Blanco. She says there will be a memorial service in the Blanco Methodist Church on Oct. 16. Wants me to help with an obit. Mike Collie called me tonight. He called Augie and left a message on the answering machine. Bruce Hathaway sent a message that he thinks the Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. If I receive further confirmation of these plans, I will let you know. As you all know, Ron was so dear to me and this has been the most devastating news to bear. I hope you will all remember him in your prayers. He was so gifted and a truly special person. My love to you all, Liz

BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX)
Jim; It is with great sadness that I relay the news; Ron Houston has died. He apparently passed away Thursday of a heart attack. (
www.blancocountynews.com/news/article/21444) Many of us remember Ron from his two stints on KEXL and at KBUC. I believe he also worked at KTSA. In later years he served as the Mayor Pro Tem for the city of Blanco. In my humble opinion, Ron was the best voice EVER in radio. He had a great success as a commercial announcer. My favorite memory was the day I was working on my car, listening to KBUC, and gave a call. I didn't identify myself. I asked of he could play a Bob Wills tune, or something by George Strait. Within ten minutes he played a Bob Wills tune done by George Strait. He will be missed. Bob Crowley

ROBERT REYES [Bobby] (San Antonio, TX) Jim...Longtime radio and TV voice, Ron Houston passed away in Blanco, Texas, October 7, 2009. I worked with Ron in the mid 1970's at KEXL. Ron worked at KONO, KTSA and was the main voice of KLRN-TV. Ron, I will miss you very much! GOD BLESS YOU, old friend! ...here is an official print out on Ron Houston from the Blanco County News and hope you will consider using in a future newsletter, and have a good weekend! Bobby R.

JENNIFER PARADIS (Blanco, TX) From: Blanco County News to Bobby Reyes. Subject: Ron Houston obit. Hello! Attached is the obituary the funeral home sent me right after I got off the phone with you. I also posted it online if you would like to share it with anyone. (

TRIVIA ANSWER: Dr. Hook really does appear on the cover of Rolling Stone but only as a caricature, not an actual photograph.

GARY DELAUNE (San Antonio, TX) Subject: Ron Houston. Thursday: I just had lunch with a bunch of radio guys, Charlie Parker, Jay Howard, Hector Reyes, Bob Brown, Mark Carrillo, Joe Miller etc. and Charlie said he had been told Ron Houston died last night in Blanco. I don't know any particulars but Mark mentioned a service maybe held a week from Friday in Blanco. Ron was a great guy and tremendous voice. Gary DeLaune (

MARK CARRILLO (San Antonio, TX)
