AL MARTINO DIES
One of America's greatest crooners, Al Martino, dies at 82 in his home in Pennsylvania on Wednesday, October 14 2009. He is born Alfred Cini on October 7, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA. His childhood friend Mario Lanza is his inspiration to become a singer. Mario becomes the most popular operatic tenor since Caruso. In 1952, Martino wins on the Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts radio program which also brings in a recording contract. His first #1 tune is Here in My Heart in the same year. The song also reaches #1 in the UK which makes him the first American to have a #1 hit in England. Since the 1950s Al has many songs that hit Billboard's chart. Among many of those are Leon Payne's Classic I Love You Because #3-1963, I Love You More and More Every Day #9-1964, many of us fondly remember his tune Spanish Eyes #15-1966. In 1972, as singer Johnny Fontaine he sings the Love theme from The Godfather, Speak Softly Love. The Fontaine role has its base in Frank Sinatra. Martino returns to the role in The Godfather II and The Godfather III. Ironically, just last week, Al Martino is the emcee of the Mario Lanza 50th Anniversary Concert in New York. Al's touring schedule goes well into the next year with dates up to June 2010. Martino recently records a new song Trying To Find My Way. Al Martino's survivors include his wife Judi, son Al and daughters Alison and Alana.

CALIFORNIA BANS BIG SCREEN TVS?
The green monster continues in its quest. What do you estimate the annual cost is to operate a big screen TV in your home? The Los Angeles Times comes up with a figure of $30 a year. In a recent report in the Times, it appears that the state of California considers a ban on big-screen TVs. Lobbyists for the TV industry battle to get the state government to revoke this silly legislation. They say that the free market actually eliminates the TVs in question and replaces them with more energy efficient LCD and Plasma models. But their cries apparently fall on deaf ears because California legislators still push this needless bill. There's the cost to replace older TV sets but many folks already do this, but on the other hand not everyone can afford to replace their old TVs. Another cost is the freedom of California's citizens to choose what kind of TV they want to own. In times like these aren't there more important items to consider?

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, TX) Jim...Don't know if you have heard, but one of the mainstay voice talents in Texas, Jerry Houston, passed away early Saturday morning, October 17 in the Dallas area. Jerry's unique voice was heard for 40 years on radio and TV commercials ranging from 7-Eleven, Long John Silver's, Town & Country Stores to the Texas Lottery and campaigns for Fortune 100 to Fortune 500 companies nationwide. Jerry's 'gravel with a twinkle' vocal style ranged from Mason Adams-like intonations to silky-smooth Dick Orkin-like resonance to a razor-edged delivery that always commanded attention. Jerry worked for KFJZ and WFAA-AM along with other Texas stations before turning to voice talent and engineering in his own recording studios. He also taught voice-talent seminars to hundreds of present-day voiceover professionals. His generous nature, creative talent and special place in the hearts of thousands he met along his path will be deeply and sadly missed. A special 'I Remember Uncle Jer...' celebration of his life will be held at La Madeleine on Lemmon Ave, in Dallas on Wednesday, October 21, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. - Dan McCurdy, Sherman, Texas
KFJZ-1270 Top 40 radio in Ft. Worth, TX is where I, as a DJ, come into contact with Jerry Houston from 1973-75 where he is Production Manager of both KFJZ-1270 and KFJZ FM. Great guy. Lots of fun. Sad news about Jerry's passing. Too many of our radio chums are no longer with us.

RICHARD FOGLEMAN (Waco, Texas) Hey Jim, We moved to the Waco area and my wife worked for KWTX FM/TV in various positions. Her last position was co-anchor at KWTX-TV for several years. As a side note, she was the anchor on the air at the beginning of the Branch Davidian Siege after her station was the one that went in with the authorities. She was called in and was on the air solo with the reporter and photographer for the first 6 to 8 hours of the siege. She is now the Director of Media Relations at Baylor University and co-hosts a weekly television Sports Show for Baylor Athletics along with doing the color broadcast for the Baylor Women’s Basketball team. So as you can see we have been involved in the media business for quite awhile. I have found your "remembering radio" stuff very informative and brings back lots of memories. I look forward to reading it regularly and not just when you mention Mexia or Waco. Thanks, Richard Fogleman
TRIVIA ANSWER: Pat Benatar has 15 songs in Billboard's Top 40 but she originally trains at Julliard as an opera singer.

You probably know all about them, but first one I've seen. (Sonny Lee is happy to be home from his "vacation" at Pet Motel.) My station-break will now last 23 hours...Back then...BOB
ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON (1850-1894) You think dogs will not be in heaven? I tell you, they will be there long before any of us.
