ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

SOUPY SAILS ON The famous slapstick comic that we always watch for when a famous person tosses a surprise pie into his face, Soupy Sales, dies at 83 on Thursday, October 22, 2009. Soupy's longtime friend Dave Usher says that Sales dies of cancer at Calvary Hospice in the Bronx. Soupy is born Milton Supmanon on January 8, 1926, in Franklinton, NC. During his long career as a comedian he makes 5000 live TV appearances. By his own count, Sales gets hit with about 20,000 pies during his times on TV. In his home state of NC, Sales is best known for his long-running local and network children's TV show Lunch with Soupy Sales. The show features comedy sketches with whacky characters such as White Fang (the biggest and meanest dog in the USA) and Pookie the Lion. Usher says that at the height of his fame in the 1950s and 1960s, Soupy has one of the most recognizable faces in America. If President Eisenhower would have walked down the street, no one would have recognized him as much as Soupy. In his first star film role he appears in the 1966 movie comedy Birds Do It. From 1968 to 1975, Soupy is a regular panelist on the syndicated revival of TV's What's My Line? In the 1980s, Sales has a radio show in NYC. In his 1965 live broadcast on WNEW TV, Sales is upset because he has to work on New Year's Day. As he signs off his show he encourages his young viewers to tiptoe into their still-sleeping parents' bedrooms and remove those funny green pieces of paper with pictures of U.S. Presidents from their pants and pocketbooks. Put them in an envelope and mail them to me. And I'll send you a postcard from Puerto Rico! Then someone hits him with a pie. Money begins to pour in. WNEW TV suspends him for two weeks. Fans picket CH5. All this does is increase his popularity. Soupy retires his floppy polka dot bowtie and settles in NYC where he becomes a member of the renowned Friars Club. Soupy Sales survivors include his wife Trudy and two sons Hunt and Tony, who are musicians in David Bowie's band Tin Machine.

BERNARD (New Orleans-Avery Island, LA) Jim, You might note in your newsletter that my father, swamp pop and country-and-western musician Rod Bernard (This Should Go On Forever #20-1959), is back in radio, which is where he started as a teenager around 1955. (From around 1970 to 2008, more or less, he was in television.) He now serves as an advertising salesman for (KKOO FM) 106.7 Country Legends in Rayne, Louisiana and he deejays Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 pm CST. You can hear his live broadcast via the Net at: www.countrylegends1067.com/ You can also see Dad in a promotional video for the station at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpfPArHR1OE While I am it, you can view a documentary I made about Dad's career in music at www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcO90EITxqk Sincerely, Shane K. CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego, CA) Hi Jim. I hope your prostrate procedure is becoming more bearable and less pain full. Regarding Al, We were once on the same flight out of LAX heading into Vegas in front of severe weather. Al had been called to fill in for the current Sands headliner. The pilot had warned the flight might be difficult. We no sooner left the ground than it became scary time. Everyone was concerned. I'm not going to say Al freaked out but if he'd had a parachute and could have made it out the door he would have done so. On leaving the plane most of us told Al we'd see his show and my party did. Nice end to a tumultuous day. We crossed paths' a couple of years later at Capitol records and he remembered the plane ride. He was a good guy, May he rest in peace. CC

JIM ELLINGER (Austin, TX)
Hello Jim! Glad to be on board! My world of radio is very, VERY different from most of your areas of interest. Non-commercial, educational, temporary/public safety, international/development, etc., etc. I serve as the VP for North America for AMARC, the world association of community radio broadcasters. I am heading back to Africa (Ghana) on 11/4 for another NGO assignment. I put loop radio on the air here in Austin, but am no longer associated with them. You may have heard of our work to put an emergency LPFM on the air inside the Houston AstroDome post-Katrina. I have done radio theater in Mozambique, did the first-ever radio survey in the Darien Gap of Panama, etc. etc. I serve as the "designated radio nerd" on the SaveKUTAustin Committee, the current hot button radio controversy here in Austin. I also follow the 'free' radio movement, AKA 'pirates.' Sorry I can't recall just who mentioned you. So many emails. Here's a few links. Stay tuned! jim AA (

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Jim: I hope you will give the obit of Soupy Sales his due in your Monday newsletter. Soupy died night of Thursday October 22 in the Bronx at 83. Soupy graduated from my high school in Huntington, WVA in about 1943 & began his radio-TV career in Huntington (following WW11 & Navy)...then on to Cincinnati, Cleveland & Detroit then L.A. & NYC. I recall him getting his star on Hollywood Walk of Fame (already in wheelchair w/health problems), but I'll forever remember his entertainment (He had a big-selling album in 1965 "Do the Mouse") Cards may be sent to his wife, Trudy @ 245 E. 35th St, NYC 10016. B. Milton Supman, 1/8/26, Franklinton, NC (near Raleigh); family later moved to Huntington. Used name Soupy Heinz as DJ in Huntington. I believe it was WHTN at that time. I hope you'll get his story for JRRR Monday. BOB & Sonny Lee. (As of this writing, The Chronicle hasn't mentioned...course that's same paper that has never mentioned Al Martino, or even Jo Stafford!)

DAVE E. CROCKETT (Houston, TX) Jim, Research how Steely Dan got their name for a REALLY interesting trivia question! It’s a great story. D Dave E. Crockett; Audio Producer-Voice Talent; Bill Young Productions

TRIVIA ANSWER: Both Fagen and Becker are avid readers of 1950's Beat literature; they decide to name the band Steely Dan after a dildo in William Burroughs' book Naked Lunch.

VALERIE FOX (Greenville, TX)
Subject: Female Akita. Hi Jim, I have an Akita who might be a perfect match for you. Her name is Lacy. She is a little chunky, but very pretty. She walks well on a leash is very, very potty trained. She basically refuses to go potty in her crate. She never tears up anything. I think she would be great in an apartment. Are you interested? I will get some pictures of her and send them to you. Valerie Fox, Akita Rescue

ROGER CARAS (May 28, 1928-February 18, 2001)
