TV GREAT FROM DOWN UNDER PASSES Australia loses one of its TV giants. The New York born entertainer who emigrates to Australia in 1965, Don Lane, dies at 75 with Alzheimer’s. Originally, Don is a fill-in on CH9 for 6 weeks but he remains in Aussie land for a lifetime. From 1975–1983, The Don Lane Show becomes an essential stop for international entertainers with everyone from Abba, Sammy Davis Jr to Tom Waits. In 1983, his TV show ends but he moves over to sports. Lane hosts ABC's American NFL through the 90s. Since 2008, Don lives in a care facility in Sydney. Don Lane's ex-wife Jayne Ambrose and son PJ are with him at the time of his death.

VANDALS HIT KTSA On Tuesday, October 20, 2009 vandals damage several vehicles and security cameras at Talk KTSA-550 on the northeast side of San Antonio, TX. Police find several company vans with broken out windows. One has the words Vida Loca in spray-paint on its side. A cop report says that the vandals also attempt to hotwire two other vans. In the aftermath they damage the steering columns. The report also says that they cover the lenses of two security cameras with black spray paint. Alamo City gendarmes make no arrests and there is no witness of the mishap. In 2008, French-Spanish film producer, Christian Poveda, makes a documentary about a native El Salvador street gang, Mara 18. Its title is La Vida Loca (The Crazy Life). Police find Christian Poveda dead in a parked car on the north side of the capital, San Salvador. In 1999, Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin has the hit song Livin' la Vida Loca (Living the Crazy Life). This is Ricky Martin's first #1 hit on Billboard's Hot 100. The single certifies Gold on May 15, 1999. It goes Platinum on June 4th with sales of over one million copies in the U.S. alone.

DIANA MONTEZ (San Antonio, TX) Subject: KBUC Kicker news. I was Miss KBUC Kicker on around 1971, 1972 or 1973. I misplaced the paper. Do you have any idea if I can get a copy? Diana
KBUC KICKER From 1968-70 I'm Program Director of KBUC FM-AM in San Antonio, TX. In 1969, the KBUC Kicker newspaper is a brainchild of mine. Feel like it's a very good promotion to hand out the papers at KBUC concerts plus they're available at important area businesses. During that period young folks in south TX who dig Country music refer to themselves as Kickers so that's where I get the name for the newspaper, KBUC Kicker. Also, I write a column in the KBUC Kicker newspaper that's on the upper left hand portion of the first page right under the publication's title. The San Antonio young set uses a couple of other nicknames, too. Kids who reside on the south side of the city call themselves Ropers while young folks on the north side are Dopers. Ropers listen to Country music on the radio. Dopers dig Rock tunes. Try to gear my PM Drive radio DJ show to both groups and become quite successful at doing so. For instance, my long time radio buddy Johnny Shannon who is a DJ on rival Top 40 KTSA-550 invites me to their screen premiere of a new Beatles movie. A KTSA personality is the emcee of the event. All of a sudden he mentions that Jim Rose from KBUC is in the audience. Embarrasses me but receive surprising loud applause from the audience. Miss those wonderful golden years when radio is real and a happening place to be on the dial.
BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Subject: Jim Ellinger. Jim; What a nice surprise to see Jim Ellinger join the JRRR tribe. He's one of my radio heroes. I recall how he went through the long and arduous process to convince the FCC to open a new Non-Com frequency in Austin, only to have U-T file a competing application just as the filing window was closing. Never mind the fact that U-T already had one station in Austin, 'Uncle Charlie' doesn't act on contested filings...usually someone comes in and buys out the competitors (as Steve Hicks did to get KFMK-FM). This time the solution was for Jim's KOOP-FM to share the frequency half days with U-T's KVRX-FM. Solomon would be proud, but I was disgusted. Adding insult to injury was the way Jim was forced out of the station he had created. I am pleased to hear that he has stayed active in radio. Bob Crowley

RAY WHITWORTH (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#730) October 26, 2009 [Monday] Hi Jim: Soupy Sales...that was humor!!! My aunt started out with the Reprise Label (Dolton/Liberty) and worked directly with Frank Sinatra. She would send "demos" of Soupy's Albums to us, along with Alvin and The Chipmunks and the Ventures. She worked with Soupy on a few occasions and became friends. She said he was a very gentle, kind soul and would do anything to bring a smile to someone. I would watch him religiously on TV when he was on ABC in the 60's, and I wish those shows would be released on DVD. Another great one gone too soon. Ray
TRIVIA ANSWER: Bill Withers repeats the words I know, I know, I know..." 26 times in his 1971 Billboard #3 hit Ain't No Sunshine as a place holder until he thinks up better lyrics but he never does.
DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) Jerry Houston (Litteral) and I shared one mind in terms of excellence and the need to 'resist the usual'; in our years-long creative union, I wrote/directed and we both voiced radio commercials and TV voiceovers which never wavered from that insistence; memorability and persuasive storytelling showcased our clients' product and services in a compelling, unique light. Jerry was amazing, though I never sensed that he believed it; his grasp of timing and ability to use 'just the perfect' inflection, emphasis and, with patience, wait for that precise moment to 'toss away' or vocally 'lean into' his lines was a rare talent. He was, clearly, the best male voice actor with whom I ever performed. And if told so, he would quickly demur, and give tribute to the commercial concept, subtly moving credit from himself to my writing or another voice talent's performance. There will be, from now on, a 'hole' in any dialogue commercial I write or produce. My Brother won't be there to make it better or to nudge me to go for 'one more' because he would say, "C'mon Dan, we can beat that last take." That kind of rare insistence on excellence will not be standing by my side again.
