ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

OH NO! We lose yet another music legend. One of my good friends from what we now call the good ole days in radio, Billy Deaton, dies at 74. Can this really be his age? What a shock this is. Makes us wonder who among us is next? Billy is a very good friend from way back to 1968 when his office is still in San Antonio, TX. Deaton is a JRRR subscriber, also. Will never forget when I see Billy in 1969 at the KBUC FM-AM studios in the Alamo City. He's in a big hurry. Deaton always seems to be in a rush mode. He says that he moves his office in the Alamo City to Nashville, TN to manage Country music Superstar, Faron Young. Billy also takes his music concert booking business with him to Music City where he becomes a living legend. On my wall of memories is a photo of Billy Deaton, Charley Pride and me during intermission at a concert. In his last email he says If there is anything I can do let me know. In the past, every time that I see him, ask how he's doing. Always, he replies Another day. Another dollar. Billy Deaton probably never does count the many millions of those dollars.

NEW AKITA DOGGIE IS HERE!
As you know, my precious Akita girl doggie, Tejas, dies on May 8, 2009. This completely shatters my life because Tejas and I are so very close. Several friends assist to help me rescue another Akita girl doggie, especially Jo Travis, Chuck and Kendall Dunaway, Billy Thorman, Joyce (J.C.) Webster, Tom Aswell, Ron Selden, Chet Maxwell, Jim Carter, Andy Carr and others. Search and search the Internet but the nearest available Akita doggie that I find is at least a thousand miles away. What am I to do? Well, Valerie Fox comes to my rescue. Valerie has an Akita rescue kennel that is about 60 miles northeast of my hometown Dallas in Greenville, TX. She says that she has the perfect Akita for me. Her name is Lacy. She sends pictures of Lacy. Wow! What a beautiful doggie Lacy is! Valerie brings Lacy here to her real home in Houston around 2pm on Sunday, November 1st just in time for my wonderful birthday present on November 16th. Lacy girl is a gorgeous 5 year old Akita who is one of the sweetest doggies on the face of God's green earth. She's a 90 pound teddy bear. We are a match made in Heaven. Lacy quickly settles into her new home. She sleeps like a baby but snores like a lion. Lacy and I thank you so very much for your help in bringing us together. May Lacy live a long and healthy life.

TOM ELLIS
(Boston-East Sandwich-Newton, MA) Great news about Lacy, Jim, Surely you know that it's entirely normal and natural for Lacy to be very anxious about everything in her life at this particular moment. Who knows what she's already experienced in her previous situations, and she's not sure just yet exactly how this one will be. This, after another long journey, and all of these new smells and sights and sounds and visuals is bound to be quite confusing. From what I've read about Akitas, she is very intelligent and independent and loyal, and as soon as she bonds with you she'll be comfortable and settle down, and you'll be in love again. So just be patient and things will work themselves out for the both of you. Good luck, Tom

MARY LYNN KNOCHELMAN (Cincinnati, OH) Congrats on your new dog Lacy. For your sake I hope she's not an escape artist. I live with one. My jack Russell terrier named Ricky. How have we solved the problem? We keep him hooked on a long lead which is attached to a metal stake in our back-yard. And when he's inside, I keep doors closed at ALL TIMES! Mary Lynn in Cincinnati PS My friend, former WLW Sports Talk Host Andy Furman was in your city of Houston last week, having done a one day radio Sports Call-In Show on KBME-AM (formerly KULF-790).

ATTILA HONEY (NYC, NY) Oh Jim, What great news! We all were praying for you! This has made my day. Every dog has their little quirks – and there is a period of adjustment for pets who have had other owners. Stop worrying! You have a new baby – just love her. Did you ask the woman what she was used to eating? This is probably just nerves on her part – but she’ll grow to love you (and eat you out of house and home) – how can she help it? Much love to you. Attila Ps: Jen is beside herself with joy for you. She says to tell you that she loves you mucho! (

JO TRAVIS [JIM]
(Hot Springs, AR) Subject: Valerie Fox. I hope you and Lacy are getting acquainted and she is settling in. If there is any way you can, I hope you give Valerie and her Akita Rescue a plug in JRRR. She really deserves it. She does a lot to help find homes for Akitas. (

TRIVIA ANSWER:
The original name of the Beatles' White Album is A Doll's House but British progressive band Family releases an album earlier in 1968 with the same title.

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, TX)
CONGRATS, JIM! Lacy is an absolutely gorgeous Akita. On your walk to the back parking lot, did you sense that she was pulling away from you or trying 'too hard' to explore/escape? If not, I'd keep her in and around your place pretty close for a while in order to 'feel like' it's home and the place for her to stay. And, of course, always on the leash when she's outside. I'm speaking from experience, since I had a Bichon Frise that would bolt like crazy to escape...we had a special collar made for him with his name 'Sparky' and our phone number. He got away on numerous occasions, but fortunately we always got a call (this was in San Angelo) and granted, Houston ain't San Angelo. Why not call the lady you got her from and simply ask if Lacy had a propensity to escape, whether running away or wandering off? Dan McCurdy

LOUIS SABIN [All About Dogs As Pets] No matter how little money and how few possessions you own, having a dog makes you rich.
