ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
POPULAR ACTOR HAS CANCER The Associated Press reports that popular easy riding actor Dennis Hopper receives a diagnosis of prostate cancer. Because of this, the 73-year-old trouper cancels all of his travel plans to focus on his treatment. This really touches home because I undergo prostate procedures and treatment for the past several months. Each and every step of the way produces lots of pain and constant turmoil. Our prayers are that Hopper pulls through this ordeal with flying colors. Early in October 2009, Hopper enters a New York hospital for treatment of dehydration. Of course, we all remember him in the 1969 movie Easy Rider. Recently, Dennis receives the Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in Paris, France. Hopper's manager, Sam Maydew, says that the performer undergoes treatment through a special program at the University of Southern California. Sam does not elaborate on the movie star's condition but he does issue this brief statement We're hoping for the best. Dennis just finishes a film shoot of the second season of Crash, which is a TV version of the Oscar-winning 2004 film where Hopper plays the maniacal music producer Ben Cendars. The series airs on the Starz network.

TOM ELLIS (Boston-East Sandwich-Newton, MA) I swear, Jim...you gotta write a book. You MUST! All those great stories you have about your experiences in radio simply MUST get preserved for those of us who've been there, and for all those who will never get to know the wonderful world or radio as we old timers knew it. There's so much history stored there in your brain, and you have the writing talent and intelligence to put it into such interesting story form, and all THAT simply should not be allowed to go to waste and be forgotten. Of course, you have an internet record, but what happens for instance to the story you've just told me about KASO? My goodness, it's priceless. It’s unadulterated Americana. It's a vital part of our disappearing history. I know you know this, and I'm reinforcing it. I have stories...but they're not nearly as descriptive of the business in those days, or as interesting as are yours. Your stories are pure history, so do something with them, Jim. Please. Tom

JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#734) November 04, 2009 [Wednesday] Jim, Congratulations on Lacy coming into your life. She couldn't ask to be with anyone better. I'm the same way with Scotties that you are with Akitas...I'd rather spend time with Maxwell than I would with a lot of people I know! I'm not antisocial, I'm pro Scottie, and looking to work with the Capitol Area Scottie Rescue folks this next year. I'm sure Lacy will bring a lot of joy into your life, and you into hers. Yours Truly, John Hale, Mobile Magic Music 512.336.8742 (33.Music) djhale@mobilemagicmusic.com "We're at the best parties!"
DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) Jimbo...just read about Ed Salaman's, um, departure from his executive director's post at Country Radio Broadcasters, and felt that the exit press release from CRB president Becky Brenner would make an excellent fill-in-the-blanks 'downsizing' template for future organizations wishing to off outstanding, longtime contributors like Salaman (10-year president of programming for Westwood One, co-founder of USRN, Country Music Radio Hall of Fame). Now, colossal, multi-station corporations, large national associations and multi-tentacled international consortiums won't need to go to the expense of calling their PR agencies or summon in-house talking heads to inform the press of their sincere appreciation for the long-term service of dedicated employees during an unfortunate 'downsizing adjustment period.' Dan McCurdy, Sherman, Texas: KLIF, KBOX-Dallas; WMEX-Boston; 2004 Inductee, Texas Radio Hall of Fame; Fortune 500 advertising/PR executive (retired); freelance writer; voice talent
TRIVIA ANSWER: Dave Clark turns down his initial appearance on The Ed Sullivan TV Show because he never hears of it. It is only after the Dave Clark V get to America and performs on the program, do they learn how big the Sullivan show is in the USA.
BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Jim: The last surviving member of the R&B soul group, The Silhouettes, has died. Rev. John "Bootsie" Wilson, former lead singer, died at his home in Spartanburg, SC, age 69, on Sept. 21, 2009. The group is best known for their smash hit "Get A Job" in 1958, which was #1 for 13-weeks & one of the first R&B songs to crossover to be #1 also on the Pop-charts. This is #3 addition to last story dispatched. BOB
