FRIDAY THE 13TH IS HERE!
ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
AEROSMITH NEEDS NEW SINGER After 40 years as the front man for Rock band Aerosmith, Steven Tyler decides to depart and make a go of it as a solo artist. Joe Perry, Aerosmith guitarist, mentions in Twitter: Aerosmith is definitely not breaking up. Aerosmith is positively looking for a new singer to work with. You just can’t take 40 years of experience and throw it in the bin. Steven Tyler shocks his fans when he announces through the press but not through Aerosmith that he quits the group that he fronts for four decades. On their last tour, stories come to the surface that Tyler distances himself from other members of Aerosmith. So, after 40 years, Steven Tyler finally releases his first ever solo album. As he proclaims last weekend, from now on he puts his focus on Brand Tyler.

TRHOF 2009 This year the Texas Radio Hall of Fame induction ceremonies and dinner are at the historic Tin Hall in Houston, TX on Sunday, November 8, 2009. Meet and greet so many of my old time radio compadres that there just is not enough room here to list them all. Some of them receive their 2009 induction certificates. Publisher of Texas Hot Country magazine Leon Beck snaps photos. Run across many others, too. Seated at my table are Houston radio legends Marty Ambrose and wife, Mike Cannon and wife, J.R. Kennedy, plus east coast radio legend Bob Grant (Robert Hanger). Paul Williams does not make it to the event.

SUSAN SATHRE-GONGOS (Tampa Bay, FL) Hi Jim, Thank you for asking about Ida and its effects on the Panhandle. Ida was pretty much a non-event here and boy are we glad about that. It did some erosion of the beaches which is to be expected but did not seem to do any property damage to speak of. I did notice a few potted plants knocked over, but that really doesn't count. Lots of needed rain and trees are more bare than before. We really dodged the bullet. How is Lacy doing? I bet you both are very happy together. Have a good Veteran's Day. Susan Gongos
TOM 'CAT' REEDER (Washington, D.C./Reston-Centreville, VA) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#737) November 11, 2009 [Wednesday] Hi Jim...I love your e-mails. I tried to respond to yesterday's note...but, it didn't go through. My first job in radio in 1955, I worked for Cy Blumenthal at WARL in Arlington, VA. In 1958 hr bought WABB in Mobile, ALA. and I went there in 1958 and worked there until 1960. Then I went to WKCW (Big 'K') in Warrenton, VA. As they say the rest is history. I'm now at WAMU (American University) in Washington, D.C. Thanks friend, Tom 'Cat' Reeder

LEE ANDERSON (McAlester, OK) Jim, Some more history on KKYX for Bob Grant. Sometime in the Late 50's the Houston Colt 45 Baseball owners bought KKYX to promote the Major league baseball team in SA. That is where the KBAT call originated. Didn't work they tried several formats later switched to country, some of the DJ's were Bill Mack, Charlie Walker, most of them country artists or writers. I was the first weekend part timer on KBER when it went on the early 60's. KBER popularity caused KBAT to change formats I think to a big band and I think that is when it became carousel radio. which featured the carousel shaped control radio; Swanson Broadcasting might have owned it by that time. A good friend of mine, Ed Montray was the manager. Enjoy the news letter. Lee Anderson, Part owner and General Manager of KNED, KMCO, KTMC AM & FM in McAlester, Oklahoma.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Jim: Thanks for this follow-up to TRHF event on Sunday. Your un-sung efforts helped make this an even more memorable event for all of us. I salute you! Looking forward to seeing you honored next year. BOB
LEON BECK (Houston-Pearland, TX) Jim, It was really great to finally meet you (TRHoF). I just want to say again how much I enjoy your column and how much I appreciate what you do. I really had a great time at the induction and met a lot of people that I know. I'll email you the photo I shot once I get my film developed. I guess I'm the only person around that uses film in a camera. Please send me John Wesley Ryles' email address. I've known John for about 30-35 years, and lost contact with him. The last time I saw John and his wife Joni was at the Country Music Festival in Nashville in '08. Have a wonderful day. Regards, Leon (www.texashotcountrymagazine.com/)
JAY PENNINGTON (San Antonio-Boerne, TX) Hey Jim, My website about the days of KEXL in the 70's in San Antonio keeps growing. I added a fun feature recently where some of the KEXL jocks this year have put together their own audio greeting and remembrances of those special KEXL days. I also have some photos, info, and sound bytes related to Ron Houston's passing. The site has been a real blessing to me to be able to make friends with those DJ's I viewed as heroes when I was a teen and also get emails from people who have said they got to relive those days by seeing the photos of T-shirts, personalities, posters on my website. You can get there by Google putting in "remembering KEXL" or clicking to www.penningtontechnicalarts.com/KEXL The site keeps growing as folks send me images, stories, and audio files. btw, hope you and your new pup bond and have many great years together!

TRIVIA ANSWER: When they are both youngsters, future Eagles member Don Felder gives guitar lessons to Tom Petty of the Heartbreakers.
DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) Jimbo...Dano, your helpful 'typo elf' here; you write <<NY Giants verses the Dallas Cowboys game >> ...the correct word is 'versus,' Medieval Latin for 'against.' No charge, this time <bg>...but NEXT TIME, buddy, my standard rates apply...buuut, of course, for friends (and you are one) my unsolicited observations are totally, completely FREE (after you send me a pic of you and Lady Lacy). Your buddy...Dan McCurdy
MEISTER ECKHARDT (1260–1328) If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough.
