EMPLOYMENT LOOKS UP
RBR-TVBR reports that the Conference Board says the new Employment Trends Index for October 2009 takes a September turnaround that turns it into a modest two-month upward trend, although this is still way below its October 2008 position. Employment improvements are not exactly right around the corner but at least it appears to point toward the better. We can only continue to pray for the complete pivot of America's employment picture.

WHITE HOUSE FOX CHASER IS DONE Anita Dunn, White House Communications Director, who is one of the main ones behind hostilities between Obama's White House and Fox News Channel exits at the end of November 2009. Dunn's expertise is in campaign issues. She says that she never intends to remain at the communications post but she takes it on a temporary basis when Ellen Moran moves to another spot inside the Obama administration. Dan Pfeiffer, Anita's second in command, moves into his new role as White House Communications Director.

SUSAN SATHRE-GONGOS (Tampa Bay, FL) Hi Jim, Thanks for the compliment! I have a global anti-aging distribution business and I am a product of the products! They work to keep me looking and feeling younger all the time. No, I don't know who sang Gee Whiz. I think it was a slow song, though. Am I right?

CARLA THOMAS has the slow dance R&B tune Gee Whiz. It hits the Billboard chart when we are seniors at Kimball high school in Dallas, TX in October 1961.

JIM AND JO TRAVIS (Hot Springs, AR) FYI: Former Austin mayor Roy Butler has passed away. He died Friday at the age of 83. He suffered a fall last week, and died of complications from that fall. He owned KVET/KASE up until 1998 when he sold it to Capstar. Christmas bonuses were always generous. (

ROY BUTLER
owns a new car dealership in Austin, TX plus he holds the keys to the KVET-1300 building when I'm a DJ there in 1973. Great radio station.

JOHN SUMMERS (Los Angeles, California) Hi Jim, Wife Dana & I love your column! We're longtime broadcasters going on 40-years. I've done it all on-the-air, as well as built, owned & operated stations, very successfully. I also had a stint in DFW at 1190-KLIF & 1120-KCLE. Wondering if you could put a mention in that we're looking to buy a 'mom & pop' operation...AM, FM, AM/FM combo...in the Lone Star, as we'd love to live there again, escaping the SoCal insanity of my home state. We'd even take a down & out situation, as we're turnaround specialists. We're huge dog lovers & had two Akitas during the 90's! They're practically human...what a wonderful & distinctive breed. My contact info's below if anyone wants to respond. Thanx Jim. Keep up the good work. John Summers; Los Angeles, California

TOM ELLIS (Boston-East Sandwich-Newton, MA)
Hi Jim, As I've said before - if I were there I'd take out for a juicy steak dinner. I'm not there so you're on your own. Keep smiling. The only thing better than sending you this card would be giving it to you in person. Have a wonderful birthday. Tom

TRACY PITCOX (Brady, TX)
Subject: Big Bill Lister Needs Cards and Letters! Country Music Association of Texas Hall of Famer Big Bill Lister is now situated at Life Care Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. He is still in ICU and remains hooked up to the ventilator. He is awake and responsive though several times they have had to give him some anxiety meds to help calm him down and those usually end up putting him to sleep. It is still a very long road ahead for him. He seems to be very responsive when he is read a card or letter that someone sends to him. Although, he can not communicate, the cards and letters seem to be making a difference for him. I know that he would love to hear from you and any one else that might remember and care about him. Country Music and his friends in that industry are so very important to him. The address is: Big Bill Lister; Life Care Hospital of San Antonio; 8902 Floyd Curl; San Antonio, Texas 78240. Please pass this along to anyone that might want to send him a note. Thanks!! Tracy Pitcox (

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) <<BILL CLINTON (1946-p) You can put wings on a pig, but you don't make it an eagle.>> Man, ole Slick Willy sure had a way of mixing metaphors, huh? Like, "Grab a bull by the nose, 'cause they're a dime a dozen." And this bozo was a Rhodes Scholar? Sheesh! Dan McCurdy | Sherman, Texas

TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1962 a good friend of mine in Ft. Worth, TX Major Bill Smith produces and records Jill Jackson and Ray Hildebrand's ballad Hey Paula on his Le Cam records as Jill and Ray. The record is a hot seller. This catches the attention of another TX friend of mine the recently late Shelby Singleton who quickly renames them Paul & Paula and releases the tune on the Mercury subsidiary label Phillips. Hey Paula remains #1 on Billboard for three weeks and sells over a half million copies. A couple of Major Bill's other hit recordings include Hey Baby (1961) with Bruce Chanel and Last Kiss (1964) by J. Frank Wilson. Another bit of trivia is that Rock singer Delbert McClinton from Lubbock, TX (Giving it Up For Your Love #8-1981) plays harmonica on Hey Baby.

DON TIFFIN (Dallas-The Colony, TX) Happy Birthday Jim!!

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey City, TX) Jim - Thinking of you on your special day 16 November = 66! We send best wishes for a very happy birthday! Bob, Barb & Sonny Lee

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake,TX) By golly Jimbo, I reckon you're going to make it another year. I found out my last birthday is still depressing as it has a zero on the end of it. Be glad when this year is over to get rid of it. Something about those zeros that don't feel right. I know you will be happy this birthday with your new partner (Lacy). And I pray the coming year will be better health for you. God Bless you and happy, happy birthday.

DOUBLE NICKELS comes and goes OK. But things are a lot different now. What's the term for double six's?

VICTOR HUGO (1802-1885) Forty is the old age of youth; fifty the youth of old age.
