ROCK STAR HAS SURGERY The Tennessean's Tune in Music City has an article about legendary 1950s Rock-R&B star Little Richard's recent hip surgery. The Associated Press has details: Little Richard is asking fans to pray for his speedy recovery after undergoing hip surgery at a Tennessee hospital. The Rev. Bill Minson, a Penneman family friend, says that Rock and Roll Hall of Fame recipient Little Richard is in pain before his surgery but he continues his performance schedule. Rev. Minson says the 76-year-old Little Richard asks him to tell fans to get ready to rock 'n' roll with him in the new year because he's coming back strong. Little Richard is a native of Macon, GA but he now lives in Tennessee. He recovers from the surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

SMOOTH JAZZ JOINS THE EDSEL AUTOMOBILE An Inside Radio report states, The combination of an aging audience, a dearth of new superstar artists and a new ratings methodology has caused smooth jazz to vanish from most major markets. Only five smooth jazz radio stations remain in the 25 markets that have converted to the PPM. While they continue to carry the torch, it’s no walk in the park.
POP KING STARS ON THE AUCTION BLOCK Today's poor economy doesn't seem to affect everyone. Charlie Moore who owns Hollywood Star Cars Museum in Gatlinburg, TN buys the King of Pop Michael Jackson's 1985 Mercedes Benz at a NYC auction for $104,550. Charlie also purchases a photo of Jackson as he drives the car. Moore plans to put Michael's Mercedes on display at his museum which has more than 40 authentic Hollywood vehicles that includes Elvis Presley's Lincoln and Frank Sinatra's Jaguar. A Hong Kong hotel executive buys Jackson's white glove that he wears on his first moonwalk performance for $350,000.

MOBY [James Carney] (Atlanta-Roswell, GA) [Dene Hallam - 1954-2009] Dear Friends of Dene Hallam. I'm sitting here on this Sunday morning just stunned. Dene Hallam has passed away!! "WHAT!?!" Dene won't be sitting behind his desk ever again at his office at the Moby Network facility, and in the apartment in the basement of our home, where he lived for over a year and a half. Dene was like my twin brother. Holidays would find Dene around our family table. I've been reading Facebook entries, and I'm at a loss as to how to proceed. God, he was a good man. Those Facebook posts are from scores of good people that Dene had made better, or at the very least attempted to. They're mainly from people that were exposed to Dene when he was at the top of his game, and benefited from being there. They, thank God, weren't there to see, feel, and hear the trauma of a loving man who felt he'd lost everything. For the final chapter of his life, Dene programmed our Moby network, and did it with the same amount of passion he'd had for the biggest station he'd ever taken at the top. The end of his journey came with him under our umbrella, and because of that, I'm feeling a deep sense of responsibility to insure he's properly put to rest. He was full of love, and kindness for all that had come in his wake. No man ever loved his children more than Dene loved Sam and Liz and especially Hayleigh. Mary Beth, Gracie and I were his closest family as his life ended; we feel the need to take the lead to ensure anything done "for Dene" will directly benefit "Dene's daughters" that he gave endlessly to. We're in the process of making that happen, and will post the "How To Help Dene's Girls" stuff on
www.mobyinthemorning.com and get it to the trades ASAP. Thanksgiving week isn't the best time to get a ball like this rolling at the beginning of a 3 day week. My list of those to send this to is short. Those that read it directly from me, would you be so kind as to forward to others that you're aware of that might need/want to see it. Thank you & God bless, MOBYC.C. MCCARTNEY (Nashville-Hendersonville, TN) Happy Birthday to you! Hope all is well with you and Lacy, sorry I missed this year's induction ceremony, I had back surgery, went well but kept me from flying. Your pal, CC (www.ccmccartney.com)
CHAD EVERSON (Minneapolis-St Cloud-Princeton, MN) Thanks for the mention Jim! What a great 40th Birthday! Chad. (www.WGGRN.com)

MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Hi Jim! The lost JFK assassination recordings from the old KXOL-1360AM in Fort Worth play Sunday night, November 22, over KMNY-1360AM from 6PM-7PM as a special presentation of "The Hi-Fi Club" radio show, commemorating the 46th anniversary of the event. These recordings, made by KXOL-AM reporter and former KXAS-TV news anchor Russ Bloxom and his former wife, Sanda, mainly cover the late afternoon, evening and nighttime coverage of the assassination, and extend through Lee Harvey Oswald's murder two days later. Condensed to a one-hour presentation, the tapes showcase the non-network affiliated KXOL and its worthwhile effort to cover the tragedy locally and on the scene. Listeners will hear North Texas radio notables Russ Bloxom, Roy Eaton, Bruce Neal and others as they report the events in November, 1963. The program will also stream on the internet at www.thehificlub.net, and can also be heard this weekend over KPIR-1420AM in Granbury, KLDE-104.9FM in San Angelo, and on the North Texas Radio for the Blind. Check www.thehificlub.net/affiliates.html for days and times. A podcast of the recordings will be posted to the "Hi-Fi Club" website by November 25. Mike Shannon

RANDY CALHOUN (Dallas, TX) Subject: Allen Grimm. I read your remembrances as I did a Google search for Allen Grimm. I'm not in the radio business but remembered listening to Allen when I was a teenager growing up in San Antonio. He was great and the music was even better. Where is he now? Randy Calhoun
BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey City, TX) Jim: Thanks so much for the bio on Linda Ronstadt. I have up-dated my files & appreciate your efforts. I am not computer savvy & thus did not search further. This is still a learning process for me indeed. BOB

WALTER HAMMOCK (Houston, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#741) November 20, 2009 [Friday] Seems to me he (Dene Hallam) was fairly young wasn't he? Any idea what happened? You have a great week my friend and Happy Thanksgiving. We have MUCH to be thankful for.
DAVE E. CROCKETT (Houston, TX) I’m saddened to hear about Dene Hallam passing over the weekend. Dene hired me as KKBQ/93Q Country’s first morning man along side Nancy Alexander in September of 1992. We had many fights about the direction of the show and also had many a dinner at the Palm on Dene’s dime to mend fences. Not the easiest guy (to) work for but he always knew the direction the station should go. Dene was the last of the real programmers who ran the station before sales started cluttering the air. One of the few battles he lost and it cost the station dearly. He always had my respect and he will be missed by his extended radio family. Dave E. Crockett; Audio Producer-Voice Talent; Bill Young Productions
ISSAC ASIMOV (January 2, 1920-April 6, 1992) If my doctor told me I had only six minutes to live, I wouldn't brood. I'd type a little faster.
