PHILLY RADIO-TV SINGING LEGEND EXPIRES Philadelphia, PA TV icon Al Alberts dies at 87 on Friday, November 27, 2009 at his home in Florida. Al is a founding member and lead singer on one of my favorite Pop singing groups of the 1950s - The Four Aces. Their biggest hit Love Is a Many Splendored Thing lands on Billboard's Pop chart on August 27, 1955. It quickly rises to #1 and remains there for 6 weeks and sells over a half million copies. It's the title song from the movie that stars William Holden and Jennifer Jones. Alberts is a longtime Philadelphia TV talent show host. The Al Alberts Showcase runs for decades on WPVI TV CH6 in the City of Brotherly Love. William Penn, English Quaker, names the city Philadelphia which is Greek for brotherly love.

TWO TOP TV ANCHORS DISAPPEAR IN PHILADELPHIA Bob Dylan sings, The times they are a changin'. Lots of changes at WPVI TV in 2009 when they lose two long time news anchors. Back in June 2009 ABC CH6 Sport Director Gary Papa passes away. After 56 years in broadcasting with 31 at WPVI TV, weathercaster Dave Roberts retires. Dave joins WPVI on May 15th, 1978. His final Action News AccuWeather forecast is Friday, December 11, 2009. Dave broadcasts his last ABC CH6 Thanksgiving Day parade on November 26th. WPVI TV moves out of its old building on City Line Avenue into new digs. Action News' Jim Gardner is the only member of the original news team who is still on board. In 2002, Roberts decides to cut his workload when he hands the 11pm torch to Cecily Tynan. Bernie Prazenica, President/GM of 6ABC relates, Dave has touched so many lives during his broadcast career. He is truly one of the most genuine, authentic people to ever work in the business. Without Dave, Channel 6 would not be what it is today.

SUNNY LANGSTON-GADWAY (Dallas, TX) Subject: Happy Thanksgiving! 'I’m Thankful for You. Thanksgiving is the appointed time for focusing on the good in our lives. In each of our days, we can find small blessings, but too often we overlook them, choosing instead to spend our time paying attention to problems. We give our energy to those who cause us trouble instead of those who bring peace. Starting now, let’s be on the lookout for the bits of pleasure in each hour and appreciate the people who bring love and light to everyone who are blessed to know them. You are one of those people. On Thanksgiving, I’m thankful for you. Happy Thanksgiving!' Joanna Fuchs - Sunny Gadway & Mike Glover
DAVID PERKINS (Fort Worth, TX) Hey Jimbo and Lacy (Good girl!)...Hey how cool is it to say that again? Man, you've been through it but like the champ you are, you've come out better off. Happy birthday, get weller, and congratulations on Lacy. I learn something everyday. I hadn't a clue that Chubby Checker had covered Hank Ballard till your newsletter. I was still in the Marine Corps with the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, California when "The Twist" came out in '60. Good times twisting with those California girls. Thanks for the information, man. Your newsletter is the best. And Happy Thanksgiving. I'm not so thankful for the lottery I'm gonna win Saturday but for the bread I have on the table today. Gifts from God. And if you don't believe there is a God, then gifts from the universe. So much beauty in our lives, so little evil, really. See ya'. JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Hi Jim, Just a few random thoughts about the discussion on the shakey nature of broadcasting. Anyone looking for job stability who took the time to check out broadcasting would never choose it as a profession. Stability in radio has ALWAYS been if you were still on the job fifteen minutes after clocking in, and if you worked in a non-union state, you could get canned for almost any reason. Some of us who didn't check it out, or didn't believe what we were told, came to understand you have to leave broadcasting if you want a stable career. There are some exceptions, people who've made a lifetime career at one or a few stations, but they're few and far between. One really valid point was made in the discussion...in this economy, if you have a reasonably good job, no matter what it is, hold on to it with both hands. I walked away from radio years ago, and started near the bottom working for the state of Texas, and not a day goes by without me being thankful for making that decision. I miss radio, but not nearly enough to go back in it. Yours Truly, John Hale; Mobile Magic Music; 512.336.8742 (33.Music) "We're at the best parties!"

RAY WHITWORTH (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#743) November 25, 2009 [Wednesday] Hi Jim: Hope the holidays will be your best. On the Question from Randy Calhoun about Allen Grimm. Allen "Bubba" Grimm was one of the originators of KEXL in San Antonio in the early 1970's. He did a late night to overnight shift with a progressive rock format when the station was still going by the calls KITE-FM. He stayed with the station and came back during KEXL "resurgence" in 1974. Allen, from what I understand had a Heart attack in the early 1990's and passed away. KEXL was a very good station and totally different that what was being offered at the time. Have a great holiday. Ray Whitworth
TRIVIA ANSWER: Courtney Love's AOL email account is the first to be shut down because of death threats she posts against people she thinks deserve them.
