END OF THE ROAD FOR GIBSON Back in September 2009, ABC TV says that Charlie Gibson leaves his News anchor spot but does not give a specific date. Well, it's official now. ABC News anchor Charlie Gibson vacates his World News desk on Friday, December 18, 2009. Jon Banner, executive producer, makes the announcement on Tuesday on the World News blog. CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego, CA) Subject: Mel Pennington. Hey Jim. I enjoyed reading about an old friend Mel Pennington today. I hope he is well and still hanging in there. He was a stand up guy and a pal from the sixties who was always willing to help out other folks. We did a show at the Alley Theatre together and he hired me for a weekend shift at KODA when I was working three part time jobs after getting out of the army in the sixties. I ran into him in Austin back in 1976 at a dinner for Darrel Royal and we reminisced about the good ole days. So if any of your readers know him please forward a "hello," from Chuck Cashmere. It's so great to know these people are hanging with us today and your column does a great job of reminding me about these really cool periods and episodes in my life. CC

JOHN LACKNESS (San Antonio-Shertz, TX)
Subject: A passing to report. Jim, Joe Stier, otherwise known to radio guys as Joe Conway, passed away last night about midnight here in San Antonio. Joe gave me my first big job in San Antonio radio, hiring me on as JOHN MARSHALL (I got the air name while driving by John Marshall high school). While going to school at San Antonio College back in 1978, I got word of a new station coming into town. Thought, what the heck, I'll send a tape in. Got an audition with Joe and got a job doing overnights when KCCW signed on in late 1978 from the transmitter site located just off of Perrin-Beitel road here in town. Progressed to evenings and stayed there until the station changed formats. Joe was a Jersey boy and had worked in New York with Imus before coming down here to do an unusual country format. We played country gold format during the day, then at night, he threw in stuff like the Allman Brothers, Doobie Brothers, Marshall Tucker Band, ZZ Top and a few others to mix things up. It really was a format that I enjoyed, but to be honest...was a bit ahead of it's time. Anyway, don't know details of any services at this point but will pass along when I find out and will pass along any more of his background too. John Lackness SCMS Southwest

MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Time for one last "Lunch Bunch" for the year...AND for the decade! Meeting once again at Boston's Gourmet Pizza, on the westbound 635/LBJ service road just west of MacArthur in the Valley Ranch section of Irving. We'll meet Saturday, December 5 at 1PM. As usual, very casual, no formalities, no speeches, each person pays for their own, etc. Just come out and catch up with old friends, make new friends, etc, and maybe do a little networking! And same goes as always, folks involved in any type of media, current or past, employed or unemployed (that's most of us nowadays, right?) are welcome to sit in. And bring a friend! And if you're afraid of disrupting a day of Christmas shopping, there's a Sam's, Wal-Mart, Fry's, Target, etc. all within semi-walking distance of Boston's!! Hope to see everyone there! Mike Shannon

RAY WHITWORTH (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Well Jim radio "Used" to be vibrant, exciting, creative, and imaginative. Each city had its own style and excitement. Now nothing really stands out, but several account execs and "desk jockeys" will argue differently. It used to be you earned your way up to the top from small market to big boys, but it became a "warm body paradise". Now it's program around your spots, instead of selling your spots around your programs. There is nothing to compel a listener to tune in, unless you want to argue over the phone with a talk host whose sole purpose is to make you mad. Where's the entertainment or information value in that? Radio is on a slow Viking funeral and the sails are smoldering to ash. I still do some voice work and production. Thankfully I can still write my own material and do my own production, and teach at school. Have a great holiday Jim. Ray
