HOUSTON RADIO LEGEND PASSES AWAY Edson [Ed] Irving Case 83 of the Houston suburb of Katy, TX dies on January 1, 2010. Ed leads a truly remarkable radio and TV career in the Bayou City. Many describe him as a physically huge fella but Case is a teddy bear to his many friends and clients. Ed Case's success stories in the military, armed forces radio, the Pentagon, university studies plus radio and TV are too numerous for us to mention in these few lines but we'll try to sort through his many highlights. In the summer of 1945 Ed heads to Okinawa with the 338th Ordinance Company. He transfers to the 221st Army ground forces in Seoul, Korea where he plays percussion in the band. In April, 1946 Case transfers out of Fort Bragg, NC to enlisted reserve duty. In the fall of 1950, the Army reserve calls him up for duty. He serves a year at the Pentagon's Defense Department Public Information Office. He also is an actor, narrator, and interviewer on ABC Radio's Time for Defense, The Armed Forces Hour, and Pentagon, Washington on the Dumont TV network. He serves as Floor Director at WMAL-TV in Washington, DC where one of his noteworthy achievements is the very early Billy Graham Hour of Decision plus Battle Report with young host David Brinkley. His first position in radio broadcasting is as a volunteer DJ on Walter Reed Army Hospital's Bedside Network. Ed's first civilian position in radio is as an announcer on WFAX-1220 in Falls Church, VA. In 1962 Case moves to Houston, TX. He becomes Music Director and DJ on KTHT-740 and later in the sales department where he remains until his retirement 30 years later. While on KTRH he hosts his own Jazz show, And All That Jazz that runs for 12 years. After he retires he returns to the airwaves for two years as a DJ on Classical KRTS FM (92.1). Ed Case leaves behind many relatives that include his wife of 36 years Janice Case plus numerous kids and grandkids. His memorial service is at Trinity Lutheran Church, 800 Houston Avenue, Houston, TX on Saturday, January 9th at 1:30pm.

TEXAS TEAMS WIN! The Houston Texans have their first winning season at 9-7 as they defeat the New England Patriots. Coach Gary Kubiak signs a new multi million dollar contract. The Dallas Cowboys blank the Philadelphia Eagles 24-0 for the NFC championship crown at 11-5 in the magnificent new Cowboys Stadium. Owner Jerry Jones should re-up Coach Wade Phillips contract. The Cowboys and Eagles meet again on Saturday, January 9, 2010 for the first game of the payoffs. But here's the catch. Tickets for that game range from $85 to $500. Only Saudi princes can afford to attend that critical matchup.

JEFF THOMPSON (Winston-Salem, NC) I've been following your column/report since September, when you published news and salutes to my late Houston broadcast colleague, Clarence Chaline (air name Bob Elton), whose Military Cemetery grave I will visit next week in Florida, west of Orlando. Since being first introduced that way to your weekly reports, in the ensuing months I've seen other familiar broadcast colleagues and even former UT classmates mentioned or writing in your publication. Especially, Chuck Cashmere and Tom Ellis write comments weekly. Chuck, also a former KMSC Radio colleague of Chaline along with KUHF's Jim Bell have both been in touch with me now for several years now, but I have no e-mail address for Tom who went to Radio/TV school with me at the University of Texas...and we even appeared together on stage in the school's annual "Round-up Review". Oddly, while his career went to Boston and Mine to New York City, my wife of 8 years now, who grew up in Massachusetts and went to college at Boston University had actually watched Tom Ellis for decades before she & I ever met. Tom & I DID get to meet briefly back in the 70's or 80's when he worked for a while at WABC-TV. In any event, if possible and appropriate, I'd like to recruit your help in my getting in touch with Tom via e-mail...just to give him a hail and send him hearty best wishes as we both find ourselves in our "golden years" after a lifetime in this crazy media business. Thanks for any assistance, Jeff Thompson
TOM ELLIS (Boston-East Sandwich-Newton, MA) Well, Jim, you're right if that's how you figure it. As I explained to you way back in one of my first emails, my first radio job at the old KCNC in Fort Worth paid 50 cents an hour. So, in a sense I suppose one could say that you and I sort of came up the hard way...or at least the cheap way. You're an interesting fellow, and your memory bank amazes me beyond description. Never saw anyone so adept at nailing dates and explicit descriptions of circumstances, people, moods, times, dates, etc. as you. I enjoy connecting with you. Tom
CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego, CA) I totally agree with Tom Ellis. He could have added the rampant aggression Rome committed against their neighbors in their need for energy. The parallel of which pertains to our own nation. The answer for us is so simple even a cave man would understand it. We have an abundance of natural gas in this country and could reduce our need on foreign oil and become energy independent within a three year period by converting our national and state fleets into natural gas burning vehicles for relatively little cost, mandate all service stations install at least one natural gas pump; make natural gas a priority on the auto assembly line. Cap & Carbon trade will eventually lead us into another depression. Sorry for injecting my, uneducated redneck opinion into your column Jim. CC

JAN CASE (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: Ed Case. Hi Jim, I am sending, as an attachment, Ed's obit - this is the long version that will appear in our church service folder. There is a much shorter version that will be in the Houston Chronicle (I could NOT believe how expensive Obits are!!!!). Just pull out of it what you want. As to what I'd like to say about him: Ed was a quiet, kind, sweet, gentle giant of a man who had an extremely interesting and full life. His great love was for music - first Big Bands and jazz - then later, classical music; and was an authority on both. He loved all animals and in our 36 years of married life we were never without an assortment of dogs, cats and even a rabbit. I will deeply miss him! Let me know when your news letter comes out! Now, Jim, I am like you. I will be alone with our 3 cats and 1dog. Our animals are grieving, also, I believe!! Thanks, Jim, jan case

TRIVIA ANSWER: The Who's album Tommy is a big hit in the U.S. for over 2 years but it lasts only 9 weeks on their home country England's chart.
CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Hi, I hardly ever win, but I did get a free Sony AM from WCCO, I wrote them after hearing Hobbs House at night. I was entered into a drawing and my name was picked. This was in the 70's. I think the host later went to a local with less power than WCCO but not sure. When the Medallion Shopping Center opened, 1963/1964, I went with my father to the Radio Shack there and bought an LP of Stravinsky's The Rite Of Spring and I won a 9-transistor AM pocket radio after getting my name pulled in a drawing. My mother thinks that was no accident on the part of Radio Shack to this day. 73, Charles P.S. I hope you get a lot of doggie kisses. I think if I had a dog of mine in this apartment I would call it Milo from the dog in The Mask with Jim Carrey.
WCCO-830 is a 50,000 watt clear channel radio station in Minneapolis, MN. At night WCCO's strong signal covers many states.
