ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

ELVIS PRESLEY'S BIRTHDAY! My how the time flies! Is it possible that Elvis Presley's birthday on January 8, 2010 puts him at 75 years old? To celebrate the life and legacy of the King of Rock ’n’ Roll many events and exhibits are on tap from Graceland to all across America. Beginning with January 7-10th thousands of Presley fans head to Memphis, TN to join Lisa Marie and Priscilla Presley for Elvis’ 75th birthday celebration. We can see Elvis’ 1956 Model KH motorcycle at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, WI. And from January 7-31st the museum displays photos from Elvis’ career-changing 1968 Comeback TV special. How about this? Any visitor with E.P. style sideburns and sunglasses save $4 off regular admission. Photojournalist Alfred Wertheimer’s Smithsonian traveling exhibition with pictures of a young Elvis debuts on January 8th at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, CA. Another highlight is the Cirque du Soleil's Viva Elvis that premieres on February 19th at the new Aria Resort & Casino at CityCenter in Las Vegas, NV. This celebration list goes on and on.

CLEAR CHANNEL RADIO SHAKES UP THE SAN DIEGO RADIO MARKET
In an effort to lower operating costs CCR releases Mikey Esparza from the Mikey Show at KIOZ FM (Rock 105.3) at the end of 2009 after they reach no new contract terms. Mikey heads to a crosstown station that debuts in a few weeks. On Monday, January 4, 2010 Classic Rock KGB FM (101.5) fires the Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw show after almost 20 years in the San Diego market. CCR's website states: After extensive negotiations, and offering the DSC team a very lucrative, multi-year offer, we were unfortunately not able to reach an agreement to keep the show with KGB.

FREEMAN REPLACES CRONKITE It's nearly six months since legendary CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite passes away in July 2009. But CBS keeps Walter's voice on the introduction for current anchor Katie Couric since she joins the news desk in 2006. CBS News and Sports President Sean McManus says that Cronkite's voice is a comfort but it's time for a change. When the New Year arrives, CBS replaces Walter's voice on Monday, January 4, 2010 with actor Morgan Freeman. Morgan gives CBS options to record different introductions on different programs.

GRADY MCALLISTER (Houston, TX)
Subject: Galveston's KGBC Leased Out to China Media Conglomerate. Galveston County Daily News, January 5, 2010: "GALVESTON — Unable to dial in enough financial support from advertisers, owners of KGBC radio have leased all the station’s airtime to one of China’s state-owned media companies, ending a yearlong effort at local programming. "The sudden format switch killed local shows and surprised and disappointed loyal listeners and a few advertisers. "People who tuned into 1540 AM on Jan. 1 expecting classic rock and local talk instead got Asian music and political forums, along with an array of unfamiliar programming. (http://galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=63a7f81b3dff5243) I used to listen to Paul Harvey on KGBC when it was a true Galveston station. I would usually keep listening through all the local news. This China programming will be aimed at all of the Houston area, not just Galveston. That is what always happens when an outlying station adopts a highly specialized format. I can think of two other local Galveston stations that are now long gone, KILE and KUFO. KGBC will be remembered as the last Galveston station to program to a diverse local audience. I don't normally get involved with current radio issues, but this one is unavoidable. R. TRIVIA ANSWER:
Peter Cetera's If You Leave Me Now is Chicago's biggest selling single but it doesn't help his affaire d'amour because she leaves him anyway.

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, TX) Jimbo...The article you forwarded reminded me of a salient quote of Churchill's, "I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle." - Winston Churchill. Additionally, I received a note from a recently re-met friend who lamented that she was not in Dallas during the 60's in order to be able to hear KLIF's 'Radio for Real' Texas-style. I offered the following: "Guess what? You can! One of my favorite Charlie & Harrigan' KLIF on-air shticks can be found at 'Reel Radio' www.reelradio.com/se/index.html This aircheck is in the 'Steve Eberhart Collection'; simply scroll down to the Charlie & Harrigan entry for 'Groundhog Day 1965,' kick your shoes off, close your eyes and travel back with me and Ron Chapman to the days when radio was THE REAL DEAL...not the homogeneous 'same ole same ole' sound from one station to the other; back when 'personality, creativity and show preparation' ruled the airwaves instead of the hard-drive, ho-hum, 'punch a button, lip a liner and forget it' stuff that radio listeners have to tolerate nowadays. I think you'll enjoy it...I know Ron and I did when we performed it more than 40 years ago! Yeah, like I told you, this was during the period we scored a '54 share' of total audience, compared to the 6's and 7's the Major Market top stations go 'ga-ga' over today." BTW, the 'Reel Radio' website www.reelradio.com/ has hundreds of demos and airchecks from the 'Remember Radio' halcyon broadcast days for all to enjoy. Dan McCurdy: KLIF, KBOX-Dallas; WMEX-Boston; 2004 Texas Radio Hall of Fame Inductee; retired Fortune 500 ad/PR exec; freelance writer/voice talent

THOMAS EDISON (1847-1931) The radio craze ... will soon fade.
