ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

THE NBC EXPERIMENT FAILS What may seem like a brilliant idea in the board room quickly becomes one of the worst decisions in the history of broadcasting. NBC TV taskmasters get a better idea when they pull Jay Leno off the Tonight Show and move him to the 9 pm Prime Time hour. What this does is cause a wildfire amongst NBC affiliates because Jay's lead in to their 10 pm local newscasts is a disaster. Leno is hot on the Tonight Show but totally out of place in prime time. So, NBC TV has another bright idea. They bring Jay back to where he belongs at 10:35 pm CST on the Tonight Show and push the squeamish Conan O'Brien back to his old 12:05 am slot. Do I hear an Amen? But NBC still drags their feet when they say this switch-a-roo happens in March 2010. As Snuffy Smith says, Time's a wastin'!

HOUSTON RADIO VET MOVES TO DALLAS
Tim Collins, of Clear Channel Radio Houston, TX moves 300 miles north on I-45 to become the new Executive Producer at CBS Radio's Dallas cluster. Tim is a Houston radio vet for 22 years. In his new position he works under Brian Purdy, who is in charge of CBS Radio's Dallas and Houston clusters. He also toils with our buddy veteran programming whiz Tom Bigby. Collins' duties include the Dallas Cowboys radio network, CBS' new Sports-Talk KRLD FM (105.3) and News-Talk KRLD-1080. Tim brags, This will give me the opportunity during my career to have worked with two of the best programming minds in the business in Ken Charles (late of Clear Channel Houston) and Tom Bigby. I'm happy to be going to a bigger market and doing the things I know how to do. What a time it is to be in charge of the Dallas Cowboys radio network because the 'boys whip up on the Philadelphia Eagles 34-17 in the first game of the playoffs. Next up is the Minnesota Vikings with former Green Bay arch rival quarterback Bret Favre. Go Cowboys!

BEST AND THE WORST RADIO GROUPS Jerry Del Colliano's Inside Music Media website poll for the Worst Radio Group indicates: #1 Cumulus (37%), #2 Clear Channel (30%), #3 Citadel (11%). #4 CBS (3%) and #5 Entercom (2%). At #6 are several with 1% Worst Radio Group showings: Beasley, Cox, Emmis, Greater Media, Next Media, Radio One and Salem. However Jerry's Best Radio Group poll is: #1 Bonneville (22%) and #2 Cox (12%). There's a 2-way tie for #3 Best Radio Group between CBS (9%) and Saga (9%). Also with good showings in the Best Radio Group are: #4 Emmis (6%), #5 Greater Media (5%) plus a 3-way tie for #6 between Entercom (4%), Cumulus (4%) and Clear Channel (4%). EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL

TOM ELLIS (Boston-East Sandwich-Newton, MA) Greetings, Jim and Lacy, from the frozen North, You were so right with your Jay Leno prediction. Channel 7 in Boston lost 20 percent of it's 11 o'clock news viewers during the crucial November book. What's also interesting is that way back when NBC was planning to sked Jay as the ten o'clock lead-in, Channel 7 owner Ed Ansin threatened to reject Leno and program a 10pm newscast instead. NBC threatened to pull its net syndication if Ansin did that, and Ansin caved. Looks like Ansin and you were right. Bet you'll be warmer in Houston before we are here on Cape Cod. This is the second month in our deep freeze, and nobody's predicting a January thaw yet. My nose is like a faucet with a bad washer. Very leaky. Tough luck for our Longhorns. Please say a prayer for my Patriots, and I'll do the same for the Cowboys. Stay warm, Tom

JIM TRAVIS (Hot Springs, AR) You mentioning your first radio job got me to thinking about my first job. Looking back now I see that I did things backwards. I started out at KFMK in Houston and ended up at a one horse station in Hondo before being booted out the back door in 2008. Most people start out in some jerkwater town and if they're lucky, end up in some big market like Houston. Of course, back then, KFMK was no big deal. FM was not important. Everybody knew it would never amount to a hill of beans. The studio was on the yop floor of a skyscraper of the Medical Arts bldg. or something like that. When I say top floor, I mean really top floor. We were up there with all the air conditioners and open ductwork. It had burlap bags on the wall for sound proofing. We had 2 mike switches; one for the right channel and one for the left channel. We played wall to wall instrumental. It seems like the only time we were allowed to speak was to give the station break. But, what the heck, it was easy. Looking back now, I wish that I would have listened to my stepfather and gone to welding school instead of radio school. After all, they still need welders---even old ones. Not too many radio stations are looking for old, washed up, over the hill has-been DJs. If you hear of one let me know. Jim (

KIMBERLY MORRISON HEACOCK (Houston, TX)
I found your site while searching for Arch Yancey. I lost track of him when my mother died 10 years ago. He and my mother had been friends since their twenties and he had helped my family's business with radio ads and such throughout the years. I was hoping that you knew how or where he is now, or if you know someone else who might know. Thank you so much! Kim Morrison Heacock, International Billiards, Inc. (

GRADY MCALLISTER (Houston, TX)
Hello, Kimberly, I believe I did meet Arch Yancey many years ago, but I am not usually up to date on individual personalities unless they contact me directly, or I read about them on the Jim Rose web site. I know that I have seen him mentioned recently on the Rose site. I will forward your message to Mr. Rose, and he may be able to forward your message. R. Grady McAllister
