ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

THE PEACOCK EXERCISE MISFIRES MISERABLY Well, it finally becomes official on Sunday morning, January 10, 2010 that NBC TV cancels the Prime Time Jay Leno TV show after low ratings plus an outrage from local news affiliates. That's about when NBC's coverage of the Winter Olympics begins. Jeff Gaspin, NBC Universal TV Entertainment chairman, tells reporters at NBC's portion of the TV Critics Association press tour, We realized we had to make a change. This is perhaps one of the largest mistakes that the Peacock board room ever makes is to put Leno in Prime Time. NBC thinks it saves a lot of money when it moves Jay from his highly successful Tonight Show to Prime Time at 9 pm because expenses are tremendous to produce award winning drama series. But they cannot see the forest for the trees. Jay Leno's Prime Time ratings shares plummet. Local TV stations depend on strong network shows as lead ins to their newscasts. Jay's new Prime Time effort bombs. NBC TV affiliates scream bloody murder but the Peacock only issues threats. Now the shoe is on the other foot. Gaspin confirms that he asks Leno to host a half-hour show at 10:35 pm CST with Conan O'Brien's Tonight Show at 11:05 pm and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon at 12:05 am. It's highly unlikely that Carson Daly remains in late night because local affiliates take over programming at 1:05 am CST. Gaspin adds, My goal is to keep Jay, Conan and Jimmy as part of the late night lineup. Another crisis appears because this magic move upsets Conan O'Brien. He thinks that he has the Tonight Show all to himself. Fox cable TV is after Conan for its new version of the Tonight Show awhile back. Will the bidding war begin again? NBC is in a panic mode to fill the 9 pm CST spot that is now wide open after The Jay Leno Show leaves the scene. NBC gives green lights to a handful of TV pilots that are in the running for the 2010-11 season. Jeffrey Immelt, honcho at NBC Universal's parent company General Electric, tells investors recently that he expects the network to lose millions of dollars on the upcoming Winter Olympics in Vancouver that begin on February 12, 2010.

GIOVANNI LUCA FABRIS (Vicenza-Thiene, Italy) Subject: Elvis Presley 1955 search - looking for info on Mrs. Edythe B Stringer KCUL. Dear Jim, Hope you're fine and Happy 2010! This is Fabris G. Luca, Italy, Again. I'm the Elvis Presley researcher especially on the early days. I'm now trying to locate Mrs. Edythe B. Stringer, publicity woman for KCUL radio in Forth Worth, TX in 1955-1956 or contact member of her family. I'm still researching in relation to a book/CD project for the Elvis fan club network. It's a 3/4 CD 200 pages book about Elvis stay at SUN records done by Ernst Jorgensen (BMG chief on Elvis music catalogue) which I'm now helping detailing the period from July of 1954 through the end of 1955. The book will consist of more than 400 early photos - half of them previously unpublished. It's not an attempt of once again write the story of Elvis Presley, but more a collection of information, photos, memorabilia and stories shared by fans who where there at the time. The book will not deal in gossip or other unpleasant material, it's all about the innocence of the time and the impact of Elvis' music. We are trying to document every single show Elvis did, and we have come fairly close. So I'm looking for photos, recordings from Louisiana Hayride (KWKH program transmitted also by KTHS) or Opry, or any live radio gig or interview .... ANYTHING IS WELCOME FROM THE 50s!! Mrs. Stringer promoted the Sinclair Sisters who toured with Elvis back in 1955. Could you help? Do you have friends owning photos or recordings? Your help, anyone's help is welcome! Write soon. I hope this is not too much of an intrusion. Sincerely yours, Fabris G. Luca, Elvis Researcher

GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX)
Jim. I respectfully question the email from Lee Anderson. KBAT was originally KENS. The owner of the Colt 45s (later the Houston Astros) bought the station and changed the call letters to KBAT. I came to San Antonio and KTSA in 1959 and I don't remember KENS or KBAT having a country format from that time until I moved to KBAT in 1965. I remained at KBAT until 1968. Most of that time KBAT top 40 rock. Just before I moved to KBER they changed to easy listening adult oriented music. They didn't change to KKYX and country until about 1970 or '71. I don't think Charlie Walker ever worked for KKYX. All the time I knew him (we were golfing buddies) he was at KMAC. His single "Don't Squeeze My Sharmon" was a national hit in 1968 and launched his singing career again. He left San Antonio and radio and went back to touring the country full time. Also, to the best of my knowledge, Bill Mack never worked the San Antonio market. I think he spent most of his radio career in the Metroplex. Please see this link for verification.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Mack I'm sure there are readers of your website who can confirm (or deny) my recollection of those years. I would welcome their replies. George Lester Elkhart, Texas

BILL MACK never is on the air at a radio station in the city of Dallas, TX as far as I know. In 1967, when Ed Miller hires me away from KHFI FM in Austin to be noon-3 pm DJ on KPCN-730 in Big D, Bill Mack is the AM Drive DJ. KPCN is in Grand Prairie which is between Dallas and Ft. Worth. In the summer of 1967 we play Charlie Walker's big hit Don't Squeeze My Charmin on KPCN. Sounds great coming out of the newscast. In the early 1960s Charlie is a DJ on KMAC-630 in San Antonio when it's a Country station. Before KPCN, Bill Mack is mornings on KCUL-1540 in Ft. Worth. When WBAP-820 in Cowtown flips the all night show to Country, Bill is the all night DJ. Probably 1972, WBAP flips formats to all Country. In San Antonio, before 680 is KENS [to go along with KENS TV] and KBAT, it is KABC but nothing to do with the ABC network. ABC network buys those call letters for its Los Angeles radio station. All of this information is in back issues of JRRR. From 1970-71 I'm a DJ on KBAT-680. In 1971 as Bill Rhode and I talk before I head to KBOX-1480 in Dallas, TX I tell him how to get good ratings with 680. Mention that first of all there is confusion amongst listeners because there are three radio stations in the Alamo City where the second call letter is a B - KBUC, KBER and KBAT. Must change the call letters. KBAT has a strong signal. Switch formats to Country. KBAT's DJs are great. Keep the same DJs. Then KBAT will have strong ratings. In 1971 I go back home to Dallas to KBOX-1480. Rhode must discuss what I tell him with Ric Marcellan the GM because that's exactly what they do. Sometime after I leave, KBAT switches call letters to KKYX in either 1971 or 72 and flips the format to Country and remains so, today. As a reward for success Swanson promotes Ric to GM of KFJZ-1270 and KFJZ FM in Ft. Worth. But no one ever reveals the fact that the whole idea is mine.
