MAD DOG AND ENGLISHMAN HAS BRAIN SURGERY
The 67-year old 1970s Rock star piano player, Leon Russell, who is part of Joe Cocker`s Mad Dog and Englishmen recovers from brain surgery. Leon's Web site fills us in, Leon is recovering after successful surgery on Monday to relieve a chronic condition. He is doing fine and resting in the hospital in good condition. He is expected to be released from the hospital in a few days. Leon is looking forward to beginning studio recording sessions during the last half of this month through February with Elton John, Bernie Taupin and T-Bone Burnett. He and his band will resume touring at the beginning of March. Leon Russell is born Claude Russell Bridges on April 2, 1941 in Lawton, OK. Russell writes Joe Cocker’s Classic Rock tune Delta Lady, plus he performs in Joe's band. Leon's biggest hit single is Tightrope at #11 in 1972. One of my favorites is Lady Blue which hits #11 in 1975. We spin that 45 rpm record on Top 40 KXOL-1360 in Ft. Worth, TX. JRRR wishes Leon Russell a complete and speedy recovery.

LEE ANDERSON (McAlester, OK) Subject: KBAT. Just reading post from George Lester in the January 13 newsletter. Bill Mack was a dj on that station. I can't remember if it was still KABC or KENS at that time. That would have been 1959-1960 time frame. Charlie Walker, Neal Merrit and a guy named Ray can't remember his last name. They were all writers and singers except the weekend dj. The weekend part-time guy was a one armed man, I can't remember his name either. About 6 months after KBER went on the air the format changed on 680. Charlie Walker wound up on KMAC. KMAC was a Mutual affiliate and did block programming. I was offered the job at KMAC when Charlie left, But I was working for a part ownership in a little station In Pearsall, TX. KBER was a daytimer, Jerry Wilder did mornings, the Program Director, Bob Wolfe did middays, The Chief Engineer Dick Jones did afternoons. Myself and a Guy named Swanson did weekends. George, e-mail me and we can compare notes. Thanks for this great newsletter. Lee Anderson

MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX)
Hi Jim! In response to the note from Giovanni Luca Fabris, Edythe Stringer died in October, 1975, in Dallas. There was no obit in the Dallas Morning News (might have been in the Times Herald instead) and there's nothing in the Morning News archives about Stringer or the Sinclair Sisters or anything that relates them to KCUL...so I can't refer him to any family or other leads. But good luck to him anyway! Sounds like an interesting project. He might get hold of Tom Aswell, who I believe posts here occasionally and has documented the history of rock-and-roll in Louisiana, and likely has some good information about KWKH during the 50s. Best to you and your pup! Mike Shannon (

HERB SKOOG [Herb Carl] (San Antonio-New Braunfels) Hi, I’d like to clear up some information about KENS/KBAT/KKYX Radio, San Antonio. In 1959 I moved from Program Director/early AM DJ at KONO to Manager of KENS Radio (680) then owned by the Express News. At that time KENS was a traditional station with CBS Radio and all that went with that. Early on we changed the format to all country all the time. In addition to Charlie Walker we had Bill Mack, Aaron Allen and other DJs (sorry I can’t remember them all) covering all 24 hours of the day. Joe Simpson headed our news department. Our sales staff was headed by Chip Adkins and Chester Maxwell. From the beginning we enjoyed being the leading country station covering over 105 counties. We had great success in sponsoring the leading country artists of the day, filling the Municipal Auditorium numerous times with great shows. Things were going well when we were approached by Judge Roy Hofheinz owner of the then new Houston Colt 45’s (later the Astros). He wanted us to carry all of their baseball games live. We turned him down explaining that we did not think San Antonio listeners would care about a baseball team in Houston, plus it played havoc with our all country format. Shortly after that, he bought the station and our attitude toward baseball changed. We took new call letters KBAT and gave it our best. Not long after I left for KTRH in Houston before moving to New Braunfels as owner manager of KGNB and later adding KNBT. I remember some wonderful years (1951-1959) at KONO radio & TV, which is another story for another time. C. Herb Skoog (Herb Carl), New Braunfels, TX

DAVID PERKINS (Fort Worth, TX) Subject: Bill Mack, WBAP and KCUL. Hey, Jimbo and Lacy (good girl, get Daddy to give you a treat!) Some time lines to help out. I went to work for KBUY (formerly KCUL) as Charlie Brown in the fall of 1966. Bill Mack was not there at that time as I remember. In the early fifties, I was a Star-Telegram paper boy and KCUL was on my route on Tulsa Way in Fort Worth. The all night DJ (not Mack) would let me slip start some records. I left KPRC Houston and went to work as PD using my real name on WYAM in Birmingham, Alabama after KPRC stopped playing country music. This was February, 1970. My wife and I did not like Birmingham, once we settled in, and I took a week-end and vacation fill in DJ slot (as Charlie Brown) on WBAP in about December 1970. WBAP had already gone "country gold" at that time. Bill Mack was the all night DJ and Don Day was the PD. I'm sure Bo Powell and others could be more exact but hope this helps with the time line on WBAP and KCUL.
