ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

BREAKING NEWS! MOVIE LEGEND NEAR DEATH! In September 2009, doctors diagnose actor Dennis Hopper with cancer. Later it spreads to his bones. In October 2009, Dennis goes to the hospital with flu-like symptoms. That's when he discovers that he has prostate cancer. The 73-year-old actor enters into an experimental treatment program at the University of Southern California Medical Center. But his condition worsens. Just before Christmas, he enters Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA for treatment. The National Enquirer reports that Hopper tells friends and family that he doesn't have much time left. He's ready to die now that he completes the filming of his TV series Crash. Dennis also manages to finish the edit of his personal 546-page book of photographs that he snaps. This is such shocking news for us fans. We really enjoy Hopper's great performances in many movies, especially Easy Rider (1969) and Apocalypse Now (1979). Those are two of my all time favorite films. We request prayer for Dennis Hopper in his urgent time of need.

SHAKE UP AT THE BIG 89
On Friday, January 15, 2010 an unexpected surprise greets Citadel employees at News/Talk WLS-890 and True Oldies WLS FM (94.7) Chicago, IL with the announcement of a new GM. Farid Suleman (CEO) upgrades Michael Damsky to President/GM of WLS to replace two-year WLS GM Michael Fowler. Damsky is a 28-year radio veteran in the Windy City. He spends 24 of those years at crosstown WXRT FM (93.1) where he blossoms into VP/GM. Farid issues a staff memo: I have known and worked with Michael Damsky for a long time. I know his background will be critical in taking both of our stations to new highs.

FABRIS GIOVANNI LUCA (Vicenza-Thiene, Italy) Hi Jim and Lacy, So good to hear from you! Yeah it's some time I wrote you. It's been tough searching (Elvis Presley data) till now. Thanks for Arch Yancey. I was looking for DJ Lynn McDowell then a DJ in 1955 at WBIP Booneville where Arch began his career. Now I'm trying to locate this lady...Edythe B Stringer... How's weather by you?? And...Happy 2010!!! Thanks again for your kind help...!!!! Luca

LEE ANDERSON (McAlester, OK) Herb Carl...Thanks for coming to my rescue on KENS. For a while George had me thinking I was dreaming. KENS was my favorite station along with KTSA when I was a teenager in San Antonio. I remember the Colt 45 thing. San Antonio would not support Houston baseball. Roy even bought the San Antonio Mission baseball team, tore down the old Mission Stadium and moved the Texas League team to another town, hoping that would spur interest in the Colt 45s. Didn't work just made San Antonio baseball fans mad. KGNB brings back memories, when I was probably 10 or 12, KGNB had block programming as did most small town stations and my mother would listen to the Polka Music everyday. That would have been early 50's.

KEITH FARR (Lodi Lake, California) Jim: I live near Lodi Lake California. My daughters live in Utah and Kansas City. Susan, my second daughter is a world wide Inspirational author. 2theheart.com I totally left the Industry in 1992...but document old radio announcer time-lines from the forties and fifties. The way we did radio then was "creative now lost art". By the way, Gordon McClendon (Texas) owned a few Bay Area stations...most successful. I never knew him. Our parent station was KEEN in San Jose/San Francisco. There were ten stations in our group. Hawaiian Islands, Las Vegas, Fresno, Stockton San Jose. Best! K

JIM ELLINGER (Austin, TX)
Subject: Bad Radio News Outta' Haiti Tonight. Very worrisome news. Radio Fondwa was destroyed. Six other community radio station in the western district are reportedly "severely damaged." I have been talking with the family of two US volunteers. They survived, but inform me of two locals' deaths in the building collapse. Two American women working at community radio station Radio Fondwa are confirmed to be alive by family members. "They just made it out as the entire building collapsed," said Jamalyn Williamson's aunt Karen Potts of Cincinnati. Two Haitians reported killed in the building collapse. no other info at this time 7:45pm. There does seem to be limited cell phone traffic on/off the island. URGENT! We are urgently seeking any information about Sony Esteus, the manager the Western District's Radio Fondwa. Any info appreciated. cheers, jim ellinger, AMARC/AA

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, TX) Subject: "BILL MACK never is on the air at a radio station in the city of Dallas, TX as far as I know." I believe you're correct, Jim...but it was close! Bill Mack came to KBOX when I was there in 1966 and interviewed for a slot. Bill Ward, PD at the time, told Bill that we didn't have an (air) shift open, and I assume, knowing BW's politeness, he must have told BM that he would keep him in mind if something opened up. Ironically, some months later, in January 1967, KBOX abandoned the Top 40 format and went full blown Country, thus missing hiring one of the most iconic C&W personalities ever to emerge from the D/FW area. WBAP went Country in, I believe 1972, with Bill Mack later emerging as 'The Midnight Cowboy' on the station's midnight 'til dawn Trucker's Listening Post...Wow...I can still hear Bill's theme 'The Orange Blossom Special' winding up in my memory-bank. My best to all, Jim...and give Lacy a nice noogie for me. <g> Dan McCurdy, Sherman, Texas: KLIF, KBOX-Dallas; WMEX-Boston; retired Fortune 500 advertising/PR exec; freelance writer, voice talent; 2004 inductee, the Texas Radio Hall of Fame

TRIVIA ANSWER: When Stephen Stills first plays his latest tune for Buffalo Springfield he says Here's a new song I wrote, for what it's worth. When he finishes someone asks What is the title? Steven replies that he doesn't have a name for the song. A member of the group says, Sure you do. You just said it: For What It's Worth.

VALERIE FOX (Greenville, TX) I hope you and Lacy have a Happy New Year too!!! Valerie

RAY WHITWORTH (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Hi Jim: George Lester what a San Antonio radio legend. I remember him on KBAT & KBER. He is wrong though about Bill Mack. Bill was for a very short time on KENS Radio in SA. I remember listening to him and he wrote about the experience in his book. San Antonio radio then had such a personality about (it) from station to station and it was one of the great factors that made me decide to go into broadcasting. In 1978 it started to erode and today...well don't get me started. Ray Whitworth

YVONNE DANIELS [first female DJ on Chicago's WLS-890 who goes on to become one of Rock radio's best DJs] (1937-June 21, 1991) I decided that I had to make good there (WLS) because if I didn't cut it, they might never hire another woman.
