ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

SWAMP POP PRINCE PASSES Bobby Charles is born Robert Charles Guidry in Abbeville, LA on February 21, 1938. During his childhood he listens to Cajun music, also Hank Williams. At 15, Bobby hears Fats Domino. He says that changes my life forever. Charles pioneers South Louisiana's Swamp Pop music. Bobby writes some of the most important tunes of Rock history. In 1955, he releases Later Alligator on Chess records which lands at #14 on the R&B chart. In 1956, Bill Haley's version of the song See You Later Alligator zooms to #6 on Billboard's Pop chart. There are other evergreens like Fats Domino's Walking To New Orleans [#6-1960] and Clarence [Frogman] Henry's (I Don't Know Why I Love You) But I Do [#4-1961]. That song also finds its way onto the soundtrack of the 1994 Tom Hanks movie Forrest Gump. The soundtrack of the 1998 Drew Barrymore movie Home Fries contains his melody Why Are People Like That? Because of his South Louisiana R&B vocal style, many refer to Charles as black, but he is white. On November 26, 1976, The Band invites him to perform in their farewell concert, The Last Waltz. Along with Dr. John and The Band he does Down South in New Orleans. Virtually everyone in the Louisiana music scene holds Bobby Charles in high esteem. At New Orleans' 2007 Jazz Fest, Bobby's band includes Sonny Landreth and Mac [Dr. John] Rebennack. In September 2007, Charles inducts into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. He suffers from cancer. On Thursday, January 14, 2010 Bobby Charles collapses and dies at 71 in his home near Abbeville.

Radio listeners in Dallas, TX since the Fabulous Fifties are familiar with the voice of air personality Ron Chapman. Ron's long radio career begins at WHAV-1490 (now WCEC) Haverhill, MA in 1953. In the mid 1950s we hear him in the Dallas/Fort Worth area on the highly successful Charlie & Harrigan Show on KLIF-1190 for 6 years. DAN ROSEN (Tokyo-Kamakura, Japan) Subject: News. Dear Jim, This story goes back beyond your usual time frame, but my Mom died on Sunday the 10th. She performed under the name Jayne Walton both on her own and as the Champagne Lady with the Lawrence Welk Orchestra in the 1940s. She later appeared as a guest on his television program several times. Here's the radio connection: she sang on many of the nation's radio stations over the years and got her start on stations such as KTSA in San Antonio and KRLD in Dallas. For a while, she had a nationwide show out of WOW in Omaha I believe, sponsored by the Red Ball Express moving company. Later on, she was based in Chicago and spent a great deal of time on the air there. At that time (late 30s through early 50s), many radio stations had staff bands. Mom said she always enjoyed the radio work. It was nice and clean, compared to trekking across the country to perform in a different city night after night. You can read a story about her here: www.mysanantonio.com/news/Rosen_was_Champagne_Lady_for_Lawrence_Welk.html Best, Dan

KBAT-680 When I'm a DJ on KBAT in San Antonio, TX from 1970-71, high school teenager Danny Rosen is an intern in the news department. We discuss a lot of radio and become good friends. One fine day I meet Dan's mom. She is a very nice person. But he never alludes to the fact that his mom once is on the radio, too, plus that she is a former Lawrence Welk Champagne Lady. Guess that sho biz blood runs deep in the Rosen family.

RICK HEROLD (D/FW-Grand Prairie, TX)
Jim, I was just a kid, who grow up idolizing everyone at KLIF and then KNUS! They were my heroes. I was very lucky to get to work at these stations. Right before McLendon sold the station (KLIF) they cut back and many of us were let go. Bruce (Hughes) stayed on however. I continued my college education and have been in Parks and Recreation for the past 26 years. However, my favorite stories and memories are my days that I got to work at "The Mighty 1190" and work for The Old Scotchman, Gordon McLendon at KNUS! Wow, what fun!!! Thanks Jim for all your GRAND work! I will miss Bruce Hughes always...Rick (

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, TX) Subject: KBOX/KPCN -- Oh, yeah...KPCN was a daytimer, and as I recall, the only C&W outlet in the Metro Mess...probably the reason Irene Runnels and Balaban decided to fill the niche in the format vacuum. Like you said, KBOX being a 24-hour outlet, it must have been a shocker to KPCN. A listener's perspective would be: after listening to C&W on KBOX at night, there would be no real imperative or incentive to change from 1480 back to 730...except, of course, to hear the Jim Rose Show from noon to 3P <g>. Sooo. I got outta the grip of KBOX and the C&W stupor that it was in 1967, and left in January 1967 when 1480 made the switch. Matter of fact, I was the final voice heard on Top 40 KBOX when I introduced Donovan's 'Mellow Yellow' right before twang-time started at noon that final/first day. My final words were, "Weird song...weird fellow." A KBOX fan/radio historian, Gary McBrayer, NYC, passed that little tidbit on to me years ago. I had flat-out forgotten about the time/song. I remembered the year, 1967 and month, January, since my 'hire date' at The Southland Corporation (7-Eleven Stores' ad agency 'The Stanford Agency') was January 23, 1967. My best to you and Miss Lacy...Dan McCurdy

TRIVIA ANSWER: Smokey Robinson's wife Claudette is his inspiration to write My Girl but his personal problems lead to their divorce in 1986.

RAY WHITWORTH (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Well my young friend I am doing some voice work for a congressional candidate and getting my certification to teach reading, social studies and special education. George (Lester) was funny, friendly. When I make a run for the White House I’ll hire you and Lacy as the next FCC chairman. Ray

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Like the nursery rhyme that goes for won't of a horse shoe nail. I have since learned other versions of Mother Goose. My mother and I went to IHop for Thanksgiving. We were going to go to the Luby's on Mockingbird but it was too crowded. I found out that the Luby's that was near my apartment is now closed. I also feel sad when I go downtown and find places boarded up. I use to enjoy Beks with their hickory sauce. I am not sure whether they even exist, sort of like Youngblood’s. I always liked ABC Contemporary when they would come on with the tune Let's Get Together. When there was a station by the Dallas Country Club.

WILL ROGERS (November 4, 1879-August 15, 1935) Everything is changing. People are taking their comedians seriously and the politicians as a joke.
