ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

FOLK MUSIC LOSES MATRIARCH The mother of vocalists Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Canadian singer-songwriter Kate McGarrigle, dies at 63 in Montreal on Monday, January 18, 2010. She struggles with cancer since 2006. CBC News reports that Rufus Wainwright cancels his tour of Australia and New Zealand to be with his mom. Kate is born in St. Sauveur-de-Monts, Quebec on February 6, 1946. During the early 1960s in Montreal Kate sings with her older sister Anna in folk group the Mountain City Four. In 1966, as a duo, the sisters furnish music for the Oscar-nominated documentry Helicopter Canada. In the 1970s Kate and her sister gain attention as the McGarrigle Sisters with their intimate folk-style harmony. For awhile, Kate goes solo in New York folk clubs. She marries singer-songwriter Loudon Wainwright III (Dead Skunk #16-1973). In 1974, the McGarrigle Sisters reunite. That's about the time when Linda Ronstadt records her tune Heart Like a Wheel. In 1976, the duo signs a contract with Warner Brothers Records. Joe Boyd produces their debut album. The McGarrigles record nine more albums for Kebec Disc (they perform in French), Polydor, Private Music and Joe Boyd's label Hannibal. Their last release is a Christmas album in 2005. In 1993 the McGarrigle Sisters receive the Order of Canada for their contributions to the nation's music.

FIDDLER SUFFERS STROKE
Probably one of the best known fiddle players that we know of, Charlie Daniels, has a mild stroke while he goes snowmobiling with his wife and friends in Colorado. We remember Charlie's big 1979 hit The Devil Went Down to Georgia. The 73 year-old Daniels suffers the stroke on Friday, January 15, 2010. He enters a hospital in Durango, which is about 230 miles southwest of Denver. Technicians airlift him to a Denver hospital. Doctors release him on Sunday. Paula Szeigis, Charlie's spokesperson, sighs It was a scary moment there but he's doing great. Cannot keep a good man down. Daniels' Web site relieves his many fans that he doesn't plan to cancel any concerts. Charlie Daniels' next appearance is on February 27th in Fort Pierce, FL.

DAN ROSEN (Tokyo-Kamakura, Japan) Subject: Thanks. Hi Jim, Thanks for the mention. Here's another article from the Chicago Sun-Times: www.suntimes.com/news/obituaries/1996678,CST-NWS-xrosen18.article BTW, when Mom sang on KRLD, I think the studios were in the Adolphus Hotel. KTSA was in the Smith-Young Tower, I believe. That building is now known as the Tower Life Building and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Glad you remember meeting her. Best, Dan

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX)
Jim: Just noted death of a San Antonio singer you may remember: Jayne Walton Rosen, singer with Lawrence Welk; born 8/28/17 in SAT & died there 1/10/2010. BOB

ROD RODRIGUEZ (Dallas-Plano, TX) Hi Jim. I was sorry to hear about the passing of Dan Rosen's mother. She sounds like quite a remarkable lady. Although I never met her, I remember hearing somewhere that she might have even been a Radio City Rockette at one point. Please pass along my condolences. I worked along side Danny in the mid 70's when we were both at KKYX out on Bandera Road. We both worked in the news department under Joe Simpson. Joe was quite a guy and I learned a great deal from him. But there must have been something in the water out there because by the late 70's both Danny and I left broadcasting and went on to law school. I understand that Danny is now a law professor in Japan while I'm involved as a federal banking regulator. And to think we started our pre-law careers out at the old KKYX ranch. Thanks for allowing me to share these fond memories. Rod Rodriguez, Plano, Texas

RICK HEROLD (DFW-Grand Prairie, TX) Subject: Bruce Hughes. Just love your newsletter. I had written you a couple of years ago looking for my old boss and friend Bruce Hughes. I worked for a short while at KLIF when Fairchild owned it, and then went to KNUS. I had the privilege to work for Bruce prior to a format change. I have tried many people, some think Bruce has died. Others, aren't sure. I thought he went home to Mississippi at one time. Any help would be grandly appreciated! Rick Herold; Director of Parks and Recreation; City of Grand Prairie, TX (

BRUCE HUGHES
Sad to say that Bruce dies a few years ago. We mention that some time ago in a back issue of JRRR. In 1972 after I leave the news department at KBOX-1480 in Dallas, TX Ted Agnew hires me at KLIF-1190 as a newscaster. This is after Fairchild buys KLIF from McLendon. KLIF-1190 is a fabulous radio station with extremely high ratings. At that time Bruce Hughes is a KLIF-1190 newscaster. What a great news delivery voice and style he has. John Rhodes leaves KTSA-550 in San Antonio, TX to be news director of KITE-930. He makes me an offer that I cannot refuse to be PM Drive newscaster. So I leave KLIF for KITE. That move has to be one of the worst decisions that I ever make. At some time after that I'm on an airplane flight from San Antonio to Dallas. Of all things I see Ted Agnew in a seat. Ted says that he tries to find me to come back to KLIF but he cannot locate me. Another bad decision for not keeping in touch with Agnew. Absolutely hate it when radio stations change their call letters. Radio history flies away into the clouds like a lost balloon. From 1967-68 I'm the 7pm-midnight DJ on 50,000 watt clear channel WFAA-820 M-F and Sunday noon-6pm DJ on WFAA-570. In 1972, a newscaster on KLIF-1190. WFAA sells their 50% mutual ownership of the 820 frequency to WBAP. So, it becomes WBAP-820 and WFAA-570. Later, KLIF flips its call letters. WFAA grabs the KLIF call signs to become KLIF-570. Never will be able to accept those call letter flips because I grow up in Dallas listening to KLIF-1190 and WFAA-820.

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, TX) Jim...my daughter 'rescued' a beautiful, solid white Great Pyrenees during the recent ice and snow...she was stranded in the middle of a busy highway here in Sherman...was undernourished and had no ID on her collar. She is a HUGE dog, but so sweet and loving...not as large as a St. Bernard, but pretty darn close. Beautiful white tail curves over her back, in somewhat the same manner as Lacy. I'll tell ya, for the first time in a looong time, I am really smitten with a dog...Hoo Boy...the kids call her 'Big White Dawg' but I'll give her a more appropriate 'Jack London' type of name...'White Fang' is too obvious, so an Alpine/Pyrenees sorta name should work...maybe 'Mon Cher' or 'Heidi' or 'Blanca'...we'll get it figgered out... Dan McCurdy
