ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
AIR AMERICA LOSES ITS LIFELINE Conservatives who live in our home towns rejoice at the sound of the latest words from Charlie Kireker, CEO of Liberal radio network Air America Media. Good time Charlie has the blues when he makes the following announcement, or should we say pronouncement? It is with the greatest regret, on behalf of our Board, that we must announce that Air America Media is ceasing its live programming operations as of this afternoon, and that the Company will file soon under Chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code to carry out an orderly winding-down of the business. So, on Monday, January 25, 2010 Air America Media disconnects its rope. But let's hold our horses for just a minute; this is the second time that liberal Air America goes bankrupt. Remember way back in 2006 when Green Family Media purchases Air America for $4.25 million? Is it really over?

SCOTUS OPENS UP THE PORTALS In its most recent decision, the U.S. Supreme Court strikes down prohibitions on corporations, and probably unions, on their monetary flow in support of or against political candidates. In times like these both radio and TV stations find themselves in intense cash flow predicaments. Does this new government proclamation present political ad surges into broadcast operations? What we may see is an open spigot of counteractive political ads on radio and TV that may rival World Wide Wrestling matches. Stay tuned to this Bat channel.
CONAN O'BRIAN IS FREE AT LAST What a way to go. Conan O'Brian is very upset that NBC moves him off the Tonight Show after only seven months and banishes him back to his former spot as host of the Late Show. The NBC boardroom's brilliant idea to remove Jay Leno from his highly successful run as Johnny Carson's replacement on the Tonight Show and put him in Prime Time hits the fan. Jay bombs in Prime Time. This causes local TV stations all across America to have huge ratings losses on their 10 pm CST news programs. They protest but NBC airheads only threaten them with the loss of their network affiliations. It now costs NBC TV over $40 million to ditch Conan and bring Jay Leno back to his rightful place as host of the Tonight Show. But NBC TV's mistake has grave consequences from which the network may never recover. They may find that it's more difficult to bring back those viewers who go elsewhere than to hold on to them in the first place.
TRIVIA QUESTION: How tall is former NBC TV Tonight Show host Conan O'Brian? The answer appears below.

MARY LYNN KNOCHELMAN (Cincinnati, OH) Subject: Andy Furman's Returning To Radio! I sent you a link to the story earlier this week, and will send you the story tomorrow or Sunday, or whenever it's written. But Andy is one of my Facebook friends and has confirmed to me that he will have a Cincinnati based sports talk show on "Real Talk" WQRT-1160 beginning Monday, February 8, from 5-7Pm weekdays. Andy has been out of radio for over two years. For 18 years he was the main Sports Talk Host on WLW-700, but was fired without cause in October 2006, three weeks after being suspended for calling former Bengals receiver a "racist" on his show for skipping a scheduled radio interview between the two of them. That's when I first began reading your Jim Rose Remembers Radio Newsletter, because you quoted Andy saying his "radio career is over". That's when I emailed you to tell you he had found a Sports Talk job on Supertalk WFTK FM. He did that job for about a year when that station changed its format to Rock Music. Hopefully this new job will last longer for him, because the station already has an all talk format, all national shows, until Andy begins February 8. And it's an advantage being an AM signal, as I think it's much stronger than FM. For an hour 6-7PM he'll be in direct competition, with his former Employer WLW's Sports Talk which runs weeknights from 6-9pm, unless there's a sports game the station plays instead. Lance McAlister is the current main WLW Sports Talk host. Mary Lynn Knochelman; Cincinnati, Ohio

RICK HEROLD (D/FW-Grand Prairie, TX) Subject: Bruce Hughes. Jim, Thanks. I hope I can find his step-son someday. Bruce was quite a character. I was at KLIF (1190) in 1974-75. Bob Schuman was the News Director. I found him in Detroit and we shared emails a few years ago. Bill Grady, now in Kansas City was also there. Ed Routh was the General Manager. Mike Snyder was also in the News Room. He switched and went over to KNUS, the last McLendon station. Mike brought me over to KNUS. He then got a TV job in Houston and Bart McLendon brought Bruce in. Tony Garret was also the News Director at KNUS for a while. Thanks Jim for all your GRAND work! I will miss Bruce Hughes always...Rick (www.GrandFunGP.com)

JOE FORD (Houston-Spring, TX) Subject: Dan McCurdy's post. Jim, I saw Dan McCurdy's post about the Great Pyrenees he found. They are, without a doubt, true "gentle giants". Our Pyr, Beau, has been with us for 11 years. He's a rescue dog, weighs in at 152 pounds, beautiful solid white, very loving and sweet. That's their nature. People are always shocked when they meet Beau and find out that we keep him in the house. Their response is amazement that a dog that big could live in the home! We wouldn't have it any other way. It gets a bit crowded when he decides he wants to sleep with us, but we adjust. We like to say: This is Beau's house. He just lets us live in it! The bad news about the Pyrenees, and most of the big breeds, is the fact that their life expectancy is around 10 years, so we treasure every single day we have with this big lug. He owns our hearts and we currently try to make him as comfortable as possible. Enjoy your "huge girl", Dan, and Jim...give Lacy a pat on the head from Beau.
