ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

MARTHA EXITS NBC TV Martha Stewart announces the end of her relationship with NBC Universal's syndication. Beginning in September 2010 Martha Stewart Living's new home is on the Hallmark Channel. The new deal gives the Hallmark cable TV network exclusive rights to original episodes of The Martha Stewart Show. The program is a part of Hallmark Hall of Fame movies, specials and TV Classics. MSL provides two and half-hours of programming each day to Hallmark. On Tuesday, January 26, 2010 Martha tells reporters I have been a viewer of Hallmark productions for as long as I can remember and it's always been a dream of mine to find a partner for our television ideas and productions that would really reflect our own values of tradition and family, and of being the type of producer of information that the homemaker really needs and wants. I am thrilled with this arrangement.

EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL

ALAN SHAPIRO (Thousand Oaks-Westlake Village, CA) Subject: Lunch...no I'm not in Wales. Hi Everyone, I guess most of you received the stupid hoax email yesterday. What a freaking horror, stole my password from yahoo and then used it on Facebook and IM. On top of that after they stole my contact list they proceeded to erase it so I couldn't contact anyone to let them know it was a scam...what a wasted day. Anyway, ashapiro70@gmail.com is my new email address so please change it in your systems. Thanks and yes, our lunch is on for next Wednesday at La Finestra, 12:30 PM. I hope I got everyone on the list if you see an oversight, please let me know, recreating my contacts is no easy task...feel free to pass on the new address, except the hijackers..lol

MICHAEL O'SHEA (Bellingham, WA) Hi Jim…Your trivia question regarding Paul and Paula…and Major Bill Smith’s Le Cam records, brought back an almost forgotten memory from my KLIF days in the late sixties. That memory was "Major Bill" visiting the regular KLIF Monday music meetings with some of Big D’s famous and infamous record promo guys, like Merlin Littlefield, Ernie Phillips, Ed Spacek and others. We loved and adored "Major Bill" and always got a kick out of his "re-mixing and re-packaging" Paul and Paula every six months or so. I recall one week it was with more strings and violins to give it a richer sound. Once he had re-mixed for a more country sound. While I wasn’t there in the 70’s I’ll bet he did a disco-mix once with Paul and Paula <smile>. Major Bill was as big as Texas…and was so much fun to chat with. Thanks for bringing back that wonderful memory. Glad to hear you have a new four-legged "partner". Sincerely, Michael O’Shea, Bellingham, Washington

MAJOR BILL SMITH First time that I ever hear of Major Bill Smith is when I'm the 7pm-midnight DJ on clear channel 50,000 watt WFAA-820 in Dallas, TX from 1967-68 with listeners in 38 states. On a clear night just never know from where the next phone calls come. One evening I receive a small package from a guy by the name of Major Bill Smith in Ft. Worth. Inside the mailer is a 45 rpm record (remember those?) from a new yet unknown recording artist. We chat a couple of times on the telephone. Next time that I hear from Major Bill Smith is in 1975 when I'm Music Director and DJ on Top 40 KXOL-1360 in Ft. Worth. This is on regular Tuesday morning visits from local, regional and national record company promo guys and one lone female. Every so often Major Bill Smith is amongst the many who sit in the reception area to promote their latest records for airplay on KXOL. Every single time that Major Bill enters my office he uses the same familiar phrase, I've got a cotton-picking smash hit. The Major usually dresses in odd clothes but he always is the most friendly person in Cowtown. The other record promo folks attire themselves in the latest hip clothing and privately poke fun at the Major. This irritates me because he is the only one in the entire group who ever produces and promotes real hit records even though it's quite awhile since his last smash hit. So, I give Major Bill Smith all of the time and due respect that he deserves as a living legend in the music industry, plus he really is a nice fella. Miss those golden all day Tuesday chat sessions with top record promoters from all across our land. Have a few stories about a couple others of those characters, too. In fact, I just plain miss radio the way it used to be before the bankers consolidate half dozens of radio stations up and down the hallways thanks to the Bill Clinton Telcom law of 1996. That's the same year that I get out of radio because things begin to fall to pieces at KILT FM. Love radio but there's just too much monkey business going on for me to be involved in.

KIP ALLEN (Palm Springs, CA) Dear Mr. Rose: I got your e-mail address from your website, news.jimroseremembersradio.com. A Mr. Rick Herold directed me to the site. I live in California, but I worked for Bruce at WKRG (710) in Mobile, Alabama back in 1978. He was one of the best newsmen I ever knew, and he taught me a lot. Kip

JIM [Catfish] PREWITT (Sacramento, CA) I think there was a Jim Rose in Corpus at KIKN in the early 70s. Too many catfish's out there now. Back in the 70s it was just me and the Catfish at KILT/KRBE. Jim Prewitt (

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM
(Austin-Kyle, TX) I have found the cure to the Clear Channel blues. No more mega-station with the same programming junk. No more money changers at the Temple stealing the community blind with endless commercials and talk non-stop about themselves. No, I have cured that for me. It was an expensive (for me) investment. But I now own my own radio station. I broadcast what I think is good music and if someone else doesn't like that music, I don't care. This invention? Something called an "iPod".
