A Horry County Department of Airports representative tells AP that the plane, which is on its way from NYC to Charleston, SC makes an emergency landing in Myrtle Beach around 1 pm on Wednesday, January 27, 2010. BLACK CLOTHES AT CLEAR CHANNEL The question of the day is why do Clear Channel employees at a certain radio station wear all black clothes on Tuesday, January 19, 2010? Inside Music Media's Jerry Del Colliano talks with the radio station's Market Manager who first guesses that it is in protest of President Obama's first year in office. But his workers inform their boss that it is to honor the 19 people that he fires on the same day in 2009.

MICHAEL O'SHEA (Bellingham, WA) Jim, We all recall the Charlie Van Dyke’s, Rod Roddy’s, Deano Day’s and Jimmy Rabbits of KLIF jock fame. But we also should recognize the amazing news voice that station (KLIF-1190) had, led by Brad Messer, Richard Mock, Ron McAlister, Ted Agnew, Bruce Hughes, Scott Hodges, Michael Hiatt, Bob Richmond et al. I know Bill Stewart gets credit for early development of KLIF…but in my opinion the overall architect of this amazing station, during this amazing time, is singularly my mentor Ken Dowe…who remains today one of the great thinkers and minds of mass communication. Just look what KD did in getting and keeping KKDA at the top for another few decades, largely un-recognized. Our Radio world has changed…and it’ll never be like that again. Sincerely, Michael O’Shea, VP/GM Saga Communications, Bellingham, WA
JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) Jim, I loved working at KLIF (1190). The people at KLIF did some very nice things for me. I got the London Flu and was so sick but couldn't go into the hospital because I had 3 children. Scott (Hodges) lived in my part of town and I shared a ride to and from work. Scott is the one recognized I had pneumonia and drove me straight to the doctor. The women at KLIF came by to see I had groceries when I couldn't get out of bed. Eventually I had to go into the hospital. At my worst, there was a hippie looking guy who worked at the hospital who would be sitting in a chair inside the door each morning. He would ask how I was doing and then leave. Turned out he was a friend of Mike Selden's and Selden had asked him to check on me. He actually came by to see me once after I got out of the hospital and asked if there was anything he could do for me. My room was filled with huge roses and things all the time. One of the announcers had mentioned I was in the hospital...KLIF fans sent most of the flowers. I think that is when I realized it was sort of a big deal to work at KLIF. The music people, of course, sent me things because they wanted me to influence Jim Taber and Michael about what to play on the air. And, they gave me lots of albums...if I said I liked something, I got it. The young engineer, Rick Neace, told me to get a cassette player. Rick ordered it getting a discount, brought it and set it up for me on the floor!!! Nice man, and he had befriended Michael O'Shea. They are friends to this day...he was in some of the pictures with Michael that he sent me from the Induction Ceremony (TRHOF).

BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Jim, I have come into possession of a copy of 'A Gathering of Promises'; the Bubble Puppy album. It has their hit, Hot Smoke and Sasafrass. Remember that one? It was a monster hit in Texas in 1968, but because they wouldn't pay the 'duquie' for the east and west coast programmers, it never got played there. Now you never hear it on the radio. It's a shame, too, 'cause the song just JUMPS out of the speakers. you'd think the local programmers would know about it, but I guess their lists come from elsewhere. Plus, anyone in high school when it came out is over 54 now, so they no longer count to the advertisers. Colostomy Low See Ento, Pour Poe-see-toe. Hope all is well for you and the pooch. We're holding on. I'm working on a Red Cross training seminar next month. That, and the income tax refund will keep us afloat through the spring...beyond there be dragons. Bob Crowley

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake,TX) Subject: hey there! I noticed in reading your back columns, Sam had some wrong information on his death. The date was right, but age and where he passed was misquoted. He was 76 and died at his home in McKinney with his family by his bedside. The report said he died of brain cancer. This was not correct but he did have a tumor growing fast on his brain. About a week before he died, his daughter said he told her with a long look as he talked, " I wonder if anyone will remember me when I am gone." I looked his name up on Google and If he could see it he would know how he has been remembered. The reason I wanted to correct his age, is because I am younger and adding a year would also boost me up one.
TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1960, a CPA from Oak Park, IL by the name of Bob Newhart records his The Button-down Mind stand-up comedy record album 50 years ago this February 2010. In 1961, it rises to #1 on Billboard's Pop chart. In 2007, NPR claims that it changes the direction of American humor.
CHARLES GEORGE Subject: The Good life Is the Nightlife. Hi, I was thinking of when Jack Paar had a film of a spaghetti tree on his show. I also saw his farewell from his show, though only as a rerun on the History Channel. I have been practicing my Spanish by listening to Radio Exterior Spain throughout the day on 17850 and 17595. I have a cassette recorder that I connect to my shortwave radio. Since my Spanish is very poor however I understand when I hear Arriba Arriba, Goal...! Also I hear clearly Radio Amazonia Brazil on 11780 throughout the afternoon. I enjoy the Brazilian Music. Charles George
