ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

MORE MONEY CRUNCHES America's current financial crisis hits radio and TV operations right between the eyes with major cutbacks in news anchors, plus news departments in general because of ad revenue losses. The Telcom Act of 1996 brings about consolidation, or constipation, that just about destroys radio as we know it. The loss of tax income wipes out city budgets as well. For instance on Friday morning, January 29, 2010 news breaks out of huge cuts in city functions in Phoenix, AZ. The metropolis announces eliminations of 500 positions in the police and fire departments. In fact a total of 1,385 city jobs evaporate. The city of Phoenix also closes some library branches and senior centers. Have no fear because the Commerce Department proclaims on Friday that our nation's economy grows at an annual rate of 5.7% in the last quarter. AP calls that the fastest [growth] since the third quarter of 2003 and strong evidence that the recession is over. HA! Tell that to the millions of our friends and neighbors who lose their jobs. Political leader double-talk must come to an end muy pronto. It's time for a REAL change to arrive in our land. Do I hear an Amen?

IOWA PUBLIC BROADCASTING FIXTURE PASSES
Greg Shanley - local host of NPR Morning Edition and News Director for 20 years dies at 49 on Tuesday, January 26, 2010. In the year 2007 Greg becomes a producer and host of talk shows. His most recent achievement is as the daily host of Talk of Iowa for NPR statewide. Shanley is a 2nd-generation radio broadcaster. For 24 years his dad, Gib, is the voice of the NFL Cleveland Browns.

PLAY MISTY FOR ME Remember Clint Eastwood's role in the motion picture where a female calls in her sultry-voice and sighs Play misty for me? Clint is a night time Jazz radio DJ on KRML-1410 in the beautiful town of Carmel, CA. This female becomes a vicious viper in his life. She shows up in all of the wrong places in a mad craze. So mindful of my Houston Play Misty nightmare of a decade or so ago. Well, we must ante up our bucks because Wisdom Broadcasting has Carmel, CA's Jazz by the Sea KRML-1410 on the market to the highest bidder.

TRIVIA QUESTION:
In what country does Rock group America originally form? The answer appears below.

ENTERTAINMENT AND NEWS MILESTONES

•1959 WVUE TV ABC CH8 in New Orleans, LA begins its 1st broadcast on February 1st. •1964 BUCK OWENS records My Heart Skips A Beat and Together Again on January 28th in Hollywood, CA. •1974 GOOD TIMES which is a spinoff from Maude premieres on CBS TV on February 1st. •1988 RANDY TRAVIS wins four awards, that include his hit Forever And Ever, Amen, at the 15th annual American Music Awards on January 25th. •1998 NFL PRO BOWL GAME AFC beats NFC 29-24 on February 1st. •2007 RODNEY ATKINS' single Watching You lands at #1 on January 27th on Billboard's Country survey.

J.D. ADAMS (Fort Pierce-Melbourne-Port St. Lucie, FL) Hi, Lorrie and I are now Floridians. I took a job selling with a chain of small newspapers on the "Treasure Coast" of Florida (Port St. Lucie, Fort Pierce, Melbourne). Lorrie's wanted to live in this area for years. I can understand why. Beautiful and right on the beach. Took Lorrie out to walk in the sand this weekend. You would have thought it was Christmas. 79 degrees yesterday. Spoke to friends back home trekking through a foot of snow and 22 degree temps. A little like being on Mars. Like everywhere, the economy is pretty bad. Actually, worse than most. We live in Port St. Lucie. News came out that home foreclosures here are the 9th highest in the nation. Good for us, terrible for the country. Unemployment also through the roof. Almost 20% where I work in Fort Pierce. Going door to door talking to business owners gives you a lot better picture than sitting in an office and just reading about it. The company lost three clients the first day I was here to bankruptcy. Attempts at positive thinking seem to have died. We can only hope our leaders start to get it soon. Hope all is well with you, your family and friends. I will only be using this e-mail address in the future (singingdogmarketing@gmail.com) I'll try to make some calls as soon as possible. Right now putting in 10 to 11 hours a day to get it figured out. Exciting to be learning a new field. Take care...JD

FRANK HALEY (Albuquerque, NM) Michael O'Shea is correct about Ken Dowe. I too worked in the Mighty 1190 news dept with Brad, Dick, Ron, Sam, Ben, but Charlie Van Dyke was truly the Golden Boy of KLIF, along with Jimmy Rabbit and Steve Lundy. But Michael knows what he's saying, even today, I am in touch with Ken Dowe on a daily basis via E-mail. What a talent and right on thinker. It's too bad we don't have more "media types" like him, someone who really knows programming and promotion. He is a "living" Gordon McClendon. To quote Michael: "Our Radio world has changed and it'll never be like that again." I am thankful that I was able to work in the "business" during its golden era, when it was really exciting and fun and I was able to know people like McLendon, Stewart and Dowe. Not many radio people had that opportunity. Frank Haley-Albuquerque, KDNT, KCPA, KGAF, KEEE, KDOK, KTBB, KVIL, KLIF, KILT, KTRH, KOB, KFLQ, KKIM. (still on the "air" at 70 years old)

CHERI FALCHETTI (Pittsburgh-Kittanning, PA) Good Morning Jim! We, hubby & I, live in his hometown, Kittanning, PA. A wee town full of history of its own. The radio station I favor is 107.9 they call it Y108 here. There's Froggy 93 as well, but I like the DJs off of Y108 better, one certain DJ from "the south" (which is WV) yakked with me for the entire trip to Wheeling one year, just to make sure I got there! When I was heading to a show to see Trace Adkins. I think he missed the 'twang/accent'. -ha-ha- yes I still have mine. thanks again, Cheri

JOHN HAMPTON (Houston, TX)
Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio January 25, 2008 [Monday] Issue #767. Jim, I grew up in DFW and listened to KZEW. there was a really sweet week-end DJ that always played my requests. I lost track of this girl and her name popped up a few times on your news. If your friend Joanie Green is the same girl I knew back then. It is nice to know that she is well and seems happy. I miss her sultry voice and personal style. I feel like radio is so lost its way, with crude and vulgar people trying to amuse. I now own an iPod and can listen to Arlo's motorcycle song and Long John Bawldry's King of Boogie Woogie and don't have to deal with rude DJs that don't want to hear from "old dudes" and b-s Music.

ROD RODRIGUEZ (Dallas-Plano, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio January 20, 2008 [Friday] Issue #767. Hi Jim. I was sorry to hear about the passing of Dan Rosen's mother. She sounds like quite a remarkable lady. Although I never met her, I remember hearing somewhere that she might have even been a Radio City Rockette at one point. Please pass along my condolences. I worked along side Danny in the mid 70's when we were both at KKYX out on Bandera Road. We both worked in the news department under Joe Simpson. Joe was quite a guy and I learned a great deal from him. But there must have been something in the water out there because by the late 70's both Danny and I left broadcasting and went on to law school. I understand that Danny is now a law professor in Japan while I'm involved as a federal banking regulator. And to think we started our pre-law careers out at the old KKYX ranch. Thanks for allowing me to share these fond memories. Rod Rodriguez, Plano, Texas
TRIVIA ANSWER: The 3 members of Rock group America are all from the U.S. but they actually meet and form their group while they live in the U.K.

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) I believe it was Bud (Buschardt). I saw it when Jim Rose came up on Sam Pate on Google. You are wrong there Jimbo. I keep in touch by JRRR but I will always remember you from those days past on Radio. Even though you may not remember me, I sure remember you.
