ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

SUPER BOWL XLIV According to a new survey by The Nielsen Company most U.S. households (9 out of 10) say they will view Super Bowl XLIV on their home TV sets or at a friend's or relative's house instead of from a restaurant or sports bar. The Nielsen poll also indicates that only 5% of home viewers expect to spend more on food and beverages for the 2010 Super Bowl. The Sun Life Stadium in Miami, FL is where the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints battle for the Super Bowl title on Sunday, February 7, 2010. On Tuesday night four people receive injuries when a small stage collapses outside the Sun Life Stadium. The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transports two by helicopter and others by ambulance to area hospitals. Local officials tell us that no life-threatening injuries occur.

PUNXSUTAWNEY PHIL
In western Pennsylvania just before dawn on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 thousands brave cold temperatures for the weather forecast by the world's most famous groundhog. Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his burrow on Gobblers Knob in Punxsutawney, PA. He sees his shadow. So that means six more weeks of winter.

ICE BRINGS DOWN RADIO TOWERS Colder temperatures and icier conditions make for a rough winter in the Dakotas. This means bad news for radio station towers. In central South Dakota, the tower that carries James River Broadcasting Country KPLO FM (94.5) and KPLO-TV Reliance, SD falls to the ground after ice builds up on a guy wire. The top 300 feet of the 712-foot tower that stands for more than 50 years topples like a domino. It's a bad weather winter for radio towers in other places, too. Rick Fritsch GM of AC KBZQ FM (The Breeze) and Urban KJMZ FM (K-98 Jamz) in Lawton, OK says that southwest Oklahoma's ice storm brings down two towers with just 40-feet in between. KJMZ FM remains off the air while KBZQ FM is back on with low-power from a back-up site.

MICHAEL O'SHEA (Bellingham, WA) Jim…I’ve enjoyed some of the e-mail dialog regarding Bruce Hughes and Ted Agnew, both news stars at KLIF-1190 "back in the day". I was fortunate to work with both and become good friends with both. Bruce was brought in from Mississippi, as I recall, and was trained by literally one of the best "rock and roll news" guru’s, Brad Messer, circa ’68 or ’69. I’m saddened to hear of Bruce’s death. One of my recollections is upon my departure of KLIF (after 7 years) in the early 70’s when Bruce agreed to take my German Sheppard, Gretl, and provide a great home, as I was unable to take her to Florida when I left KLIF for Miami/Ft. Lauderdale. Bruce reported to me years later that she led a long and happy life on some acreage he had in suburban Dallas. He was a terrific talent, in the day when news-casters could be informers and entertainers. Ted Agnew was also a good friend and associate. Sincerely, Michael O’Shea, VP/GM Saga Communications, Bellingham, WA

TED AGNEW hires me as a newscaster on KLIF-1190 in 1972. Michael O'Shea is the Program Director. Michael brings us a new outro jingle for our newscasts that requires us news people to push the button and give our names over the music bed. He says that he will teach us news guys how to be DJs. Inform brother O'Shea that that's what I am in another life. The great Mike Selden is afternoon drive DJ. Dickie Heatherton is mid-days. One day Dickie tells me that singer Joey Heatherton is his sister. At the time she is the wife of Dallas Cowboy wide receiver Lance Rentzel. Bruce Hughes is one of the brilliant newscasters. The Mighty 1190 has good buddy deep voice John Butler as a weekend DJ. KLIF-1190 is the only place to be in radio in those Golden days. What a way to live.

MIKE SIMPSON (Dallas, TX)
Greetings Jim! I can't believe we haven't crossed paths somewhere along-the-way in our respective radio careers. I too am a life long Dallas resident (except for a brief stint working at stations in Sherman, Corpus Christi, and Austin) early on. Reading the stories and comments about the "Mighty 1190" brought back wonderful memories of an era and time in radio now sadly lost forever. Seeing the names of my heroes Michael O'Shea, Charlie Van Dyke, Hal Martin and the like...Wow, I actually got to be around those guys in my youth! My first job at age 16 was covering weekend news from Sam Pate's "KLIF mobile news unit #6 - 1190 and out!"

BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX) Jim, I don't remember if Darryl Beeson was working at WFAA when you were there or not. (I forget which era of the format you were in.) Darryl eventually was a board operator for the Ed Busch show. (Maybe that was after you left.) He later was Jody Dean's producer at KRLD before joining Jim White as producer and a talent known as the "Wine Guy" on KRLD's Restaurant Show. There is a complete obit on the Dallas Morning News site. Thanks for anything you can do. Bud

DALLAS MORNING NEWS - 'Darryl Beeson, longtime Dallas wine expert and a sommelier at restaurants such as the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek, French Room, and Voltaire, died on Friday (January 29, 2010) after complications following a recent car accident. He was 54. Beeson was one of the best known wine personalities in Dallas, dating back to his regular slot in the '90s on KRLD's Restaurant Show with Jim White, where he cultivated his identity as the "Wine Guy." He was also a prolific writer, covering wine and spirits for a variety of publications such as Eats & Drinks and Cocktail Atlas. He also taught International Sommelier Guild classes on wine at El Centro College and at a community college in Houston and one in Austin. He was a regular at local media events such as the lunch in June 2009 with Argentinean winemaker where his quick wit guaranteed that he was always at the ready with a clever anecdote or tidbit of information that no one else knew. His home phone number even ended in 9463, the numbers for "wine."'

JOHN HAMPTON (Houston, TX) Jim, I left DFW to follow a construction company around the country. Radio in Utah, Virginia, Oklahoma and back to Texas is so different in every market. I found Dallas, Austin, Victoria and Houston Markets so different, but I found the easy style and mix in Victoria the best for me. I live in Houston now and gave up trying to find a station I like here years ago. John

TRIVIA ANSWER: Diana Ross records 18 US #1 songs both as a solo artist plus as lead singer of The Supremes but never does win a Grammy Award.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Jim: Your mention of death in Iowa of broadcaster Greg Shanley brought back some memories. I worked with his Dad, Gib Shanley, at WPON, Pontiac, MI in early 1956; I was News Dir & Gib was Sports Dir of station. Gib & I kept in contact over the years & every visit I made to Cleveland (home of my oldest daughter) meant a visit w/my friend Gib. Sadly, he passed away last April in Cleveland. Ironically, his son Greg was not born at the time I worked with his famous sportscaster father, who would later gain much fame in his home-state of Ohio. (Hometown was Shadyside on Ohio River.) BOB & Sonny Lee

DANIEL WEBSTER (1782-1852) God grants liberty only to those who love it, and are always ready to guard and defend it.
